Three years ago, I started working at the University of Leeds. After moving to a new city, I was looking for things to do which can help me make some new friends. I noticed that a community school was offering Chinese evening classes. Without much thought, I signed up for a Chinese class.
There was one lesson a week, each lasting 90 minutes. Mr. Kong, the teacher, was energetic. For each class, he would teach us hundreds of new words. After each lesson, I felt it too difficult to continue. Luckily, after a few months, I got used to this. Between classes, I would try to review what I had learned until I understood it. Gradually, I began to realize that the more work I put into Chinese study, the more interesting I found it.
To make further progress, I planned to find a Chinese student to help me with my Chinese. The University of Leeds had more than 600 Chinese students. So it was not difficult to find one. Soon I met my new Chinese friend, Li Hua. He helped me practice my spoken Chinese and go over everything I had learned in class. Finally, I made it.
Although there are so many words and idioms(习语) in Chinese, I am confident to get over any difficulty and become good at Chinese.

【原创题】I get into position and take a deep breath. The music starts and my mind 1 on one thing: my figure skating(花样滑冰) routine. Dressed in my 2 blue dress and skating across the ice, I feel free.
However, relearning figure skating at an older age is not easy. 3 on those 3.5-mm-wide steel blades(冰刀) and stepping onto the clear ice for the first time in years, I did not remember any of the skills that I had learned as a(n) 4 . I felt so out of place. Did I really belong here? “You have as 5 right to be here as anyone else,” my coach told me. I was 6 grateful to the coach. She treated me the same 7 her other students who compete internationally. Every day at practice, she encouraged me to 8 the difficulties bravely.
The ice is as unforgiving as life. During the 9 of learning new jumps and spins, falls are unavoidable. 10 I learn a move, I practice and fall for hours. Even so, I may still not be able to 11 it. Many times I have asked myself, “So many hours of 12 , and so much money spent on coaching and equipment, for what?” 13 the pains, every time when gliding across the ice, with the wind rushing past my face, I am reminded of the 14 why I started skating: this is the closest thing I will get to flying.
The pain is temporary, but the joy of finishing that jump I have worked on for months is something I would not trade for the world. 15 down seven times, and get up eight!
