【原创题】“Would you like some cream on your cake?” asked a cashier(收银员) at a special toy store in Shanghai. Opened by a famous toymaker company in September, the store sells cute plushies(毛绒玩具) that look like sandwiches and cups of coffee. It draws long lines of adult lovers who want to feel like kids again.
One of these toy lovers is Wang Zhiying. Since discovering this popular new toy in 2022, she has collected 117 of them and loves each one.
Adults like Wang are called “kidults”. The term, a mix of “kid” and “adult”, refers to grown-ups who love and buy toys for themselves. Today, the “kidult economy” is developing around the world. In the US alone, adults aged 18 and above bought more toys in the first quarter than the preschooler age group, according to a new report by a market research company.
The growing “kidult” trend shows the ability of toy companies to reach a wide audience, from children to adults. For Wang, the cute looks and soft feelings of these plushies are especially attractive. In her opinion, collecting them brings joy and comfort(慰藉) to people of all ages. Toy designer Sun Meng says that while some people find emotional value(情绪价值) in toys, others look for fun and creativity. No matter what the reason is, toys offer something to everyone.
For many toy lovers, the “kidult” trend is changing what it means to be an adult. “Its important to understand the difference between ‘childish’ and ‘childlike’,” said Sun. While collecting toys might seem childlike, it doesnt mean being immature(不成熟的). In the face of challenges for adults, toys are a way to return to simpler times. “Im proud of being a kidult because it helps me stay young at heart and take a break from the stress of being a grown-up,” said Wang.
