Many people dream of somehow being able to pay their parents back for the sacrifices (牺牲) made for them during childhood. For Lindsay Moore, it was finding a “prized possession” her dad once gave up, and returning it to him once again.
Moore still vividly remembers being seven when she watched her father sell his prized Dan Marino Dolphins rookie football card at a comic book store. In an online video, he relives the memory — holding onto a Christmas bag as Moore reads a card aloud. “Money was tight, so you sold your most treasured possession, at least as I saw it,” she noted. “I felt your sacrifice, and it taught me to do whatever it takes to ensure my future family never lacked anything — a lesson that’s stayed with me ever since.”
It was also the moment she became “determined” to pay her father back. Cut to thirty years later, it was the perfect opportunity to fulfill that promise. “I will never be able to fully repay that debt,” her note continued. “Seven-year-old me would be so happy to see that I finally fulfilled that promise I made to myself.” As he listened, Moore’s dad began tearing up. Sure enough, he opened his gift to see it was the valued card he sold years ago. The video concludes as Moore and her father enjoy a warm hug.
The sweet exchange certainly struck a chord online. “When he started crying I LOST IT,” one person wrote. Another added, “Something about bringing a grown man to tears always gets me.” But perhaps the best comment belonged to this one: “The card wasn’t the real gift to him. It was hearing his impact on you.”
We might not all get to reclaim what our parents sacrificed. And that’s okay. There are so many other ways to share just how much of a positive impact they made on our lives. Even saying how much we appreciate them can be an invaluable reward.
24. Why did Moore’s father sell his prized card?
A. To buy Moore a gift. B. To exchange for a book.
C. To teach Moore a lesson. D. To supplement family income.
25. What can we infer about Moore from paragraph 3?
A. She fulfilled her promise at the age of thirty.
B. She repaid her father’s sacrifice with another card.
C. She told her dad the gift was his card in advance.
D. She had intended to repay her dad since childhood.
26. What do the underlined words “struck a chord” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Touched many people. B. Caused an argument.
C. Removed its content. D. Received much criticism.
27. What does the author advise readers to do?
A. Resolve to live up to parents’ expectations. B. Express how parents positively influence us.
C. Reclaim the things our parents once sacrificed. D. Show gratitude by returning parents’ lost items.
C
For some of us, sibling (兄弟姐妹) relationships are the longest relationships we’ll ever experience. And by interacting with our siblings early on, we learn social skills, like how to manage conflicts (who gets to sleep next to mom? ) , how to play, how to share, and even how to read.
That’s the whole idea behind the Read to Me Project — a program that encourages primary school children to read to their younger siblings, even those as young as eight months old — as doing so helps kids boost their vocabulary and language knowledge while also kickstarting their reading comprehension skills.
When it comes to the older siblings, Sonia Aramburo, the principal at El Camino Real Science and Technology Academy in Greenfield, California, explains the program helps them feel a sense of responsibility by taking on a whole new role as a teacher to their younger brothers or sisters.
A study by the University of California Berkeley and UCLA found that Latino (拉丁裔) kids between 2 and 3 years old were about eight months behind their white fellow children when it came to language and cognitive skills. The gap continued through ages 4 and 5, with Latino students entering into kindergarten already behind their age-mates. The same is true for African-American kids: One study from the National Center for Education Statistics showed that 50% of African-American fourth graders tested below the most basic literary level.
“We are attacking the root cause of low literacy among Hispanic and indigenous (本土的) families,” the associate executive director of the Read to Me Project, Mary De Groat said. And by all accounts, Read to Me is making remarkable headway to solve this problem. “It helps our students build their fluency,” explained Aramburo. “It’s engaging them. One of our students last year was not reading very well. Now he’s reading to his sibling. He’s taken on a whole new role, even as a student. You just see this sense of responsibility.”
28. What can we learn about the project from the first two paragraphs?
A. It focuses on managing conflicts. B. It is based on sibling relationships.
C. It motivates kids to read to siblings. D. It aims to stimulate reading interest.
29. How does the author present the issue in paragraph 4?
A. By making comparisons. B. By defining a concept.
C. By quoting an expert. D. By analyzing causes.
30. What do Mary and Aramburo view the project as?
A. A trend. B. A process. C. A fix. D. A distraction.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Lifelong social skills develop from sibling interaction
B. Reading skills improve through advanced reading programs
C. A sense of responsibility grows with guided reading for kids
D. Great things happen when older siblings read to younger ones
D
Think of a situation that makes you nervous. Maybe you’re taking a test. Or maybe you’re at the doctor’s office, about to get a shot. Your mind races. Your heart pounds. Just then, a source of comfort walks in on a dog. As you give it touches and rubs, your nerves melt away.
People who love dogs know they can brighten any situation. This is the logic behind therapy (治疗) — dog programs, which pair trained dogs with people who need to be comforted. With their calm personalities, therapy dogs can stay relaxed in high-stress environments. Dr. Jeffrey Kline is associate chair of research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Wayne State University, in Indiana. He knew that therapy dogs have been proven to reduce stress for adult patients in hospital emergency rooms. He wondered if the dogs would help kids. The results of his study, released in JAMA Network Open in March, are positive.
Kline conducted the study at Riley Children’s Hospital, in Indianapolis. It included 80 kids, aged5 to 17. The participants were emergency-room patients. All received care from a specialist trained to help patients handle stress. Half the group also received a visit from a therapy dog and its handler.
According to the study results, patients who spent 10 minutes with a dog saw their anxiety level drop by nearly half. The effects lasted for up to two hours. “Both the children and their parents had their anxiety reduced more quickly and completely.” Kline told TIME for Kids. “These findings support the role of therapy dogs in pediatric (儿科) emergency departments.”
Kline’s study shows that therapy dogs are a powerful tool for easing anxiety in patients and their families. He hopes to take the idea further. “We are working toward a protocol (医疗方案) to provide ‘dog on demand’ for hospitalized patients,” he says. He expects demand to grow for therapy dogs in hospitals across the country.
32. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By quoting scientific research. B. By mentioning relevant situations.
C. By presenting historical facts. D. By telling a personal story.
33. What facts are the therapy-dog programs based on?
A. Dogs depend on humans for survival. B. Dogs can be friends of human beings.
C. Dogs are easy to build trust with people. D. Dogs are able to relieve stress for people.
34. What can be inferred about the study?
A. It was the first study on therapy dogs’ impact.
B. It stressed parents’ anxiety level dropped greater.
C. It showed therapy dogs could replace specialist care.
D. It proved therapy dogs’ anxiety-reducing effect on kids.
35. What is Kline’s attitude to therapy dogs in hospitals?
A. Unclear. B. Skeptical. C. Approving. D. Dismissive.

In a world that often feels hurried and impersonal, I have always held a quiet hope that kindness still exists in quiet corners, waiting to be found. That was why I was not just moved, but greatly inspired, when a complete stranger showed me a kindness so genuine that it seemed to light up the road home.
It happened during a long bus journey back to my hometown. The road stretched endlessly under a pale, high sky, and by noon we stopped at a rest point — just a dusty lot off the highway with one small restaurant and a humble shop selling drinks and snacks. I stepped off the bus, my shoulders rigid from sitting, and made my way into the restaurant. After a quick simple meal, I wandered to the shop next door, bought a bottle of water and a cold drink, and hurried back to the bus, eager to continue the trip.
Once we were moving again, I lost myself in music, earphones on, laptop open. About twenty minutes later, I noticed the bus conductor moving down the aisle (过道), phone pressed to his ear, speaking to passengers in low, urgent tones. Curiosity drew me. I pulled off my earphones just as he asked, “Has any lady lost a wallet? A pink one? ” My hand flew automatically to my bag. My heart dropped. The wallet was gone.
Panic rose like a tide, cold and swift (快速的). I called out, my voice tighter than I expected, and told the conductor it was mine. He nodded, his eyes sympathetic, and explained that the shopkeeper from our stop had called, saying he’d found it left behind on the counter. By then, the bus had already carried us far away, and the rest point was a distant memory. “Call the shopkeeper back, ” the conductor urged, handing me a number written on a ticket.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】范文
With hands shaking, I called the shopkeeper. My words tripped over one another, and his calm voice cut through my anxiety as he listened to my rushed explanation about the wallet left miles behind. Without hesitation, he said that he would drive to the next rest stop right away. Relief washed over me, cool and quiet. For the rest of the journey, I watched the telephone poles fly past the window, counting the minutes. When the bus finally pulled into my hometown station, the shopkeeper was already there, leaning against his car under the slow-setting sun.
At my hometown station, I got off the bus and hurried toward him. In his outstretched hand lay my pink wallet. As he passed it to me, his calm smile conveyed more than words could say. I took it, feeling the solid familiarity of its shape, and met his eyes with a grateful glance. The fact that he had driven out of his way without a second thought meant more to me in that moment than the wallet itself. Turning it over, I understood sometimes, the quietest corners hold the brightest kindness, and a stranger’s honesty can indeed light the way home.
