The Palace Museum’s Award-Winning Digital Show Arrives in Shanghai
The Way in Patterns: An Immersive Digital Exhibition by The Palace Museum opened at Shanghai’s Fosun Foundation on December 9th, transforming the museum’s treasury of patterns into a flowing dreamscape (梦幻一般的景色) of light and shadow. The exhibition offers visitors an impressive journey that bridges ancient heritage and contemporary sensory experience.
Seven Zones to Explore
Patterns form a fundamental visual language of Chinese civilization, adorning objects and architecture to express philosophies of nature and life. Guided by this theme, the exhibition digitally interprets traditional patterns from The Palace Museum’s architecture, ceramics, and brocade (织锦缎) across seven zones:
●Step into a wonderful painting world of celestial clouds, dragons, phoenixes, and flowers, feeling the powerful energy and life in palace designs.
●Witness plants and fruits reborn in digital light, celebrating nature’s richness and beauty.
●Use AI-powered exploration to uncover hidden connections between surface patterns and examine details in 3D models.
●Watch as digital technology pulls out and reconstructs brocade patterns, weaving them into a shiny, ever-changing world of fancy dress.
●Look up at the digital starscape of caisson ceilings (藻井) from the Hall of Supreme Harmony and other ancient architectures.
●See how window patterns tell history through shifting seasonal light, linking past and present.
●Create your own digital pattern using light as your painting brush, becoming an active participant in this living art.

Chen-Ning Yang, born in 1922 in Hefei, China, is a towering figure in the world of theoretical physics. His journey began in China, where he completed his undergraduate education at the National Southwestern Associated University, a unique institution formed during the Sino-Japanese War. In 1945, he moved to the United States on a scholarship and earned his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago.
Yang’s most celebrated achievement came in 1956 when he and his colleague Tsung-Dao Lee proposed that in weak nuclear interactions, parity might not be conserved. This idea challenged a fundamental law of physics that was previously thought to be unbreakable. Their theoretical work was confirmed experimentally within a year, and in 1957, Yang and Lee were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, becoming the first Chinese laureates. This rapid recognition is rare in the history of science.
Beyond the Nobel Prize, Yang’s contribution to physics is profound and lasting. A group of farmers in Nigeria are using a new method to grow crops from moisture (水汽) in the air. The method, known as aeroponics, does not use soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air and take in nutrients from water mist. The method could make a big difference in places where huge amounts of land have been made unfarmable.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria’s smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. Ogbole says they are working hard to end the seasonal food shortage in Nigeria. “It is just farming anytime during the year, meaning we can plant crops anytime during the year, and we can harvest anytime during the year.”
But setting up the aeroponics farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000. And people in Abeokuta boycotted this nontraditional method of farming. It took a lot of effort to change those people’s minds about it. In fact, in Nigeria, about 30 million hectares of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security. In the north, only 49 percent of the land is fertile, a situation that worries traditional farmers. Aeroponics, however, does not require traditional farm work or much land. Nutrients for the plants are controlled by a recycling system, greatly increasing productivity.
Dr. Phillip Ojo, Director-General of the National Agricultural Seeds Council, says the government welcomes the new farming method. Ojo notes that with aeroponics, farmers can quickly increase planting materials.
The agricultural industry represents about 40 percent of Nigeria’s economy. The government wants to greatly expand this percentage. For now, most farmers lack the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They also need access to high-quality seeds to guarantee (保证) better harvests. Technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
8. What can be known about aeroponics?
A. It is not affected by the seasons. B. It helps crops draw nutrients from the soil.
C. It will make the condition of the soil worse. D. It is aimed at bringing back farmland.
9. Why are Ogbole and his team working hard?
A. To reduce the aeroponics farm.
B. To end the seasonal food shortage in Nigeria.
C. To get more support from other countries.
D. To help the poor all over the world.
10. What does the underlined word “boycotted” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Welcomed. B. Approved. C. Obtained. D. Resisted.
11. What is Dr. Phillip Ojo’s attitude to aeroponics?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Opposed.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

Imagine that you are in a crowded place. You do not notice, but someone is watching you and learns your iPhone password (密码). Then, they steal your phone. Suddenly, your photos, documents, financial information, and the rest of your digital life have been taken from you.
Apple, the iPhone maker, recently released an update to its iOS operating system. It has a new feature called Stolen Device Protection (SDP). The feature makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to open the device and access important functions and settings.
Apple says the feature adds extra security for users. It addresses a drawback that thieves have used to lock device owners out of their Apple accounts, delete their photos and other files from their iCloud, and take money from their bank accounts.
SDP keeps track of a user’s “familiar locations”, such as their home or workplace. It also reduces the importance of passwords. Instead, it favors “biometric” (生物识别的) features such as faces or fingerprints, which are a lot harder to copy.
If a thief tries to erase or reset an iPhone, the device will require a Face ID or Touch ID scan to confirm that the person is the rightful owner. The new feature does not let someone use the password or any other backup method.
Another part of the new feature is designed to slow down thieves trying to change security settings. For example, if someone tries to sign out of an Apple ID account, change the password or reset the phone in an unfamiliar location, they will have to authenticate (证实) by using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and then do a second facial or fingerprint scan.
Changing an Apple ID password, updating Apple ID security settings, adding or removing Face or Touch ID, and turning off the Find My device feature or Stolen Device Protection also will lead to this feature.
12. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To remind readers to be cautious.
B. To explain how password theft directly causes device loss.
C. To set a phone-stealing scene.
D. To introduce the following text.
13. What is special about SDP?
A. It secures Apple accounts with remote locking.
B. It prevents thieves from accessing bank accounts.
C. It stops iCloud files from being deleted.
D. It makes thieves not easy to enter the phone.
14. What does SDP require for resetting a stolen iPhone?
A An Apple ID account. B. Identity confirmation.
C. Previous passwords. D. A new security setting.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Usage of biometric features. B. Apple’s iOS operating system.
C. iPhone’s anti-theft measure. D. Apple ID security settings.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. C

Together with Robert Mills, he developed the Yang-Mills gauge theory, which became a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics. This framework is essential for understanding the fundamental forces of the universe.
Yang’s life is also a story of cultural bridge-building. After retiring from Stony Brook University in the U.S. he made a significant decision to return to China in 2003, resuming his Chinese citizenship later. He settled at Tsinghua University in Beijing, dedicating his efforts to advancing scientific research and education in his homeland. He played a crucial role in establishing the Center for Advanced Study at Tsinghua, guiding a new generation of Chinese physicists.
Professor Yang is not only respected for his scientific brilliance but also for his deep cultural insight. He often emphasizes the importance of basic science and the harmonious integration of Eastern and Western scientific traditions. His life and work truly serve as a bridge connecting different cultures and eras.

7. What can we infer about Yang from his decision to return to China?
A. He wanted to enjoy a more relaxed retirement life.
B. He felt a strong commitment to contributing to China’s scientific development.
C. He lost his interest in theoretical physics.
D He planned to start a new business in his home country.
C
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Opposed.
D
A. An Apple ID account. B. Identity confirmation.
C. Previous passwords. D. A new security setting.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Usage of biometric features. B. Apple’s iOS operating system.
C. iPhone’s anti-theft measure. D. Apple ID security settings.
