Lesson Plan 3: Grammar – Articles & Prepositions of Place
Topic: Describing Locations Precisely
Textbook Reference: 7B Unit 3, Pages 35-36
I. Teaching Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Language Ability: Correctly use a, an, the to distinguish between general and specific references; Use prepositions of place (above, below, between, next to) to describe spatial relationships.
Cultural Awareness: Describe cultural sites accurately to avoid misunderstanding for visitors.
Thinking Quality: Deduce grammar rules from context; Visualize spatial relationships logically.
Learning Ability: Self-correct errors in article usage; Use diagrams to assist grammatical explanation.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key Points: Rules for the (specific, second mention, unique); Contrastive use of above/over and below/under.
Difficult Points: Zero article usage with proper nouns (e.g., Beijing vs. The Palace Museum); Choosing the correct preposition in complex descriptions.
III. Teaching Methods & Aids
Methods: Inductive Method, Contextualized Practice, Gamification.
Aids: PPT with contrasting images, Realia (a box and a ball), Worksheet with gap fills.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in
Story: Tell a short story about a tourist lost in Beijing.
"He saw a square. The square was huge."
"He wanted to see a museum. The museum was closed."
Question Chain:
Why did we say "a square" first? (First mention/General).
Why "the square" second? (Specific/We know which one).
Why "The Palace Museum"? (Unique/Proper noun with 'The').
Step 2: Rule Formulation
Group Work: Analyze the text on Page 35. Summarize rules for a/an vs. the.
Special Cases: Discuss unique things (the sun, the world) and proper nouns (the Great Wall, the Summer Palace vs. Beijing).
Drill: Quick fire exercise. Teacher says a noun, students shout "a", "an", "the", or "/". (e.g., ___ Great Wall, ___ Beijing, ___ apple).
Step 3: Prepositions
Visual Demo: Use a box and a pen.
Place pen on box: "It's on the box."
Place pen hovering above: "It's above the box."
Place pen inside: "It's in the box."
Contrast: Over/Above (higher level) vs. Under/Below (lower level). Between (two things) vs. Among (many - though not in this unit, good to note distinction if asked).
Practice: Describe the Siheyuan picture (Part B1). "Where are the lanterns? Where is the dog?"
Step 4: Integrated Practice
Task 1: Gap Fill (Articles): Complete the text about the Bird’s Nest (Page 35 A1). Focus on "the National Stadium" vs "a modern stadium".
Task 2: Picture Description (Prepositions): Show a complex scene of a park. Students write 5 sentences describing where people/objects are using target prepositions.
Task 3: Composite Exercise (Cloze): A short paragraph about a hometown tour mixing both articles and prepositions.
Example: "In ___ south of ___ city, there is ___ lake. ___ boat is ___ the water."
Step 5: Production
Game: "Blind Drawing."
Student A describes a room using prepositions; Student B draws it. Compare results.
V. Homework
Complete the grammar workbook exercises.
Write a paragraph (80 words) describing your classroom or bedroom, using at least 5 prepositions and correct articles.
