Many parents dream of their children growing up and seeing the world. But Edith Lemay,a
mother of four from Canada, worried her children were running out of time to do that.
When her first child,Mia,was little, she noticed she would bump into things. In 2018,Mia was
diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa(色素性视网膜炎),
"What it does is that the cell in the retina dies over time and they lose their field of vision.
There's a chance they will go completely blind by midlife,"said Lemay.
The disease is genetic, meaning Lemay's other kids were at risk. She soon noticed two of her
sons,Collin and Laurent,had the same symptoms.They were soon diagnosed,too.
“Of course it was devastating(令人极为震惊的).And when you have a kid,.you always have
an image of what their future is going to be like and all of a sudden, you get that news and you need
to erase that and think it over. And it really is a grieving process,"Lemay said.
Lemay wanted to prepare her kids for what was to come and thought about filling their visual
memory. In March,Lemay, her husband, and her four kids left Canada and embarked on an epic
journey, traveling the globe for a whole year-showing their kids the world, before it is too late
During their trip,Lemay is homeschooling her kids. The family also made a bucket list of fun
activities they want to accomplish,so each kid can see their dreams come true.
Lemay said her kids are not only making visual memories. They're also learning important life
lessons,like focusing on the positive."Sometimes they're tired and there's frustration.It's difficult.
But with the travel,I want them to be resilient."
第7页共13沉
"I want them to know that any situation that's hard is temporary, because through their life,
they'll need lots of resilience,"she said."They're going to adapt to a situation with their eyesight
and then in a few years later, they'll lose a chunk of their eyesights and they will have to readapt and
adapt again and fall and get back again,"Lemay continued.
Many parents want to give their kids the world and this mom did.

With gas and electricity bills rising faster,a house that produces more energy than it
consumes might sound appealing.Robert Fortunato's"Green Idea House"has achieved this for
第8页共13页
over a decade.He remodeled his family's 1959 house into a 2150-square-foot
environmentally friendly home at a cost lower than a traditional remodel.
"It's one of the first net-zero energy, zero carbon case study houses built cheaper than standard
construction,”he says,using“standard materials and off-the-shelf(现成的)technologies anyone can
use.Though the project needed much time, research, and adaptability, his family now lives in a
stylish four-bedroom home.Fortunato hopes others can learn from his experience.
First, you need to get into the power business.Fortunato wanted to cut climate-warming fossil
fuels and chose electric appliances. To supply electricity,he fixed 26 roof solar panels that power the
house and two electric cars.Though the panels cost $18,000,his family saves $4,800 yearly.
Second, thorough research and planning are key,His house's flat roof extends five feet, hiding
solar panels and saving 60%of heating or cooling energy:it shades the house in summer and lets
sunlight warm it in winter. This idea came from Native American house design.
Third, stick to your plan firmly and update it when needed.Fortunato insisted on materials from a
nearby factory to avoid long-distance delivery emissions().When the supplier said his chosen
brown color was only from Texas,he said,"Well,no,I only want the local materials,"with some
exasperation.
Finally, don't expect everyone to follow.Fortunato made his house affordable and attractive,
unlike some efficient homes that looked like spaceships,to encourage others. However, such
energy-positive houses still make up less than 1%of America's 140 million housing units, which he
finds is very disappointing.
61.What makes Robert Fortunato's"Green Idea House"special at first?
A.It has a long history.B.It is more energy-saving.
C.It is a 2150-square-foot house.D.It uses new and expensive technologies.
62.How long did it take Fortunato to recover the cost of the solar panels?
A.About four years.B.About three years.
C.About fifteen years.D.About thirteen years.
63.What does the underlined word"exasperation"in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Anger.B.Curiosity.C.Excitement.D.Embarrassment.
64.What can we infer about Fortunato's "Green Idea House"from the passage?
A.It has become a popular model for green building in America
第9页共13页
B.It is designed to be both environmentally friendly and visually pleasing.
C.It uses no fossil fuels at all for its daily energy supply
D.It cost much more time to build than traditional houses of the same size.
65.What is Fortunato's attitude towards his project?
A.He feels regretful about the time it took.
B.He is so disappointed with few followers.
C.He thinks it is too expensive for ordinary families.
D.He worries that the technologies will soon be out of date.

The 20th century was a famously fruitful time for visions of the future, but the 21st century has
failed to inspire them in the same way.Science fiction writer William Gibson has called this "future
fatigue",pointing out that we barely ever make reterence to the 22nd century.
One reason is that most of the ideas of the future that captured people's imaginations in the
20th century have mutated since then.Plastic, for example, once billed as the material of the future,
has become an environmental and health crisis-its durability and abundance turned downsides.
The dominant images of the future that we are presented with at the moment all have long
histories to them. They include space colonization, dystopian artificial intelligence and a longing to
bring back the past-but a past that never was. This makes sense given the climate anxiety and
dread about the future felt by many people. The future has started to feel like it is closing off rather
than opening out.
Jean-Louis Missika,a former deputy mayor of Paris, has written that"when the future is dark,
people turn to an idealised past,a lost golden age.Nostalgia()becomes a refuge against dangers,
a cocoon against the announced declines."
It's not that absolutely no new future visions have emerged this century. But it is notable that
no major,forward-looking future visions have taken root in our collective imagination sinee
smartphones came to dominate our way of communicating.
I think about the future for a living and it is my experience that unified visions of desirable
futures can inspire people to bring about change. They act as motivators and imagination engines.
We can use them to visualise the society we want and then commit to work towards that future.
Unifying visions of the future are also effectively used in architectural pictures,ads and TV shows;
