阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
If life is a beach, these are its strangest days. While not all of these beaches are great for swimming, they are all unique and amazing in their own ways.
Bowling Ball Beach, California
At first sight, the “bowling balls” on this Californian beach might seem strange. These perfectly round rocks sit on the sand as if someone had left them there after a game. They are best seen at low tide (潮水), when the rocks appear even more impressive. The softer rock around them was worn away by the waves, leaving behind these round stones. It’s an unbelievable sight that you won’t want to miss!
Harbour Island, The Bahamas
If you’ve ever wondered whether you could visit a pink beach, Harbour Island is the place to go. The sand here gets its unique pink color from tiny pieces of coral (珊瑚) mixing with the white sand. This beach stretches along the east coast of the island. The blue waters of The Bahamas make the beach even more beautiful. You can leave the rose-colored glasses at home for this one.
Glass Beach, California
Sitting in Fort Bragg, California, the beach was used as a dumping ground for many years until the 1960s. Over time, the ocean cut and polished (打磨) the broken glass, turning it into beautiful, colorful gems that now cover the beach. Today, Glass Beach looks like a jewelry store, and while collecting the glass is now illegal, it remains an amazing sight.
Prince William Sound, Alaska
If you’re looking for a truly unique beach experience, head to Prince William Sound in Alaska. The area features glaciers (冰川) flowing into the sea, crystal-clear waters, and black sand beaches framed by towering mountains. The place is also home to a variety of wildlife, including seals, whales, and eagles. It’s a must for nature lovers.
1. Why does the author suggest visiting Bowling Ball Beach?
A. For its high tides. B. For its swimming pool. C. For its impressive game. D. For its round rocks.
2. What is special about Harbour Island?
A. It is home to white sand. B. It has a pink beach.
C. It houses bright glass. D. It looks amazing at sunset.
3. Where will you go if you are interested in wildlife?
A. Glass Beach. B. Harbour Island. C. Bowling Ball Beach. D. Prince William Sound.

Several years ago, Dawn Larkin-Wallace, a mom of three, started running to lose 10 pounds to 20 pounds of baby weight that just wouldn’t go away. She thought once she dropped the weight, she’d be off the treadmill (跑步机). What she could have never imagined is that she’d become a marathon runner who inspired her three children to start running, too.
“We’re just a running family,” said Larkin-Wallace of Baldwin, New York, who is part of a running club. First, Larkin-Wallace signed up her 15-year-old daughter Kayla, a high school student, for a race after realizing that the amount of running she did during her soccer games was the equivalent (等量) of five kilometers.
With the positive pressure and the competitive spirit that exists in the household, Larkin-Wallace said with a laugh, “Of course, her brother and sister decided that that’s something they wanted to do, too.” Kimberly, 11, and Kevin Jr., 9, ran their first 5K’s this year.
Larkin-Wallace said her goal is for healthy living to become a lifestyle among her kids, who also play a range of sports from basketball to soccer. What she’s also very mindful of is encouraging her children, especially her girls, to feel good about their bodies. A recent study found that two in three 13-year-olds worry about gaining weight.
“It’s always on my mind, and I have to help my daughters understand that their body type is different from others and that the difference doesn’t make one better or more right than the other,” she said during a conversation with her family in their home. “As long as we’re healthy and taking care of ourselves, we should accept ourselves.”
The best advice for teenagers, Larkin-Wallace said, is to focus less on appearance and more on health, internal (内在的) qualities and things that your body can do, rather than how your body appears.
4. Why did Larkin-Wallace start running several years ago?
A. To lose weight after having babies. B. To prepare for a marathon race.
C. To set an example to her friends. D. To join a national running club.
5. How did Kayla affect her brother and sister?
A. She started a family competition. B. She inspired them to take up running.
C. She allowed them to play at home. D. She advised them to exercise indoors.
6. What did Larkin-Wallace encourage her kids to do?
A. Break their bad habits at home. B. Win honors as much as possible.
C. Accept their bodies as they are. D. Compare their bodies with others’.
7 What is Larkin-Wallace’s suggestion for teenagers?
A. Put health above looks. B. Keep a balanced lifestyle.
C. Focus on their appearance. D. Create a caring environment.

For a long time, scientists were unsure about when and where cats were domesticated (驯养). New research now shows that the time of cats becoming pets is much later than people once believed.
Researchers studied DNA from many ancient cat bones found in Europe and Türkiye. These cats lived as early as 6,000 years ago. At first, scientists thought they were early house cats. However, the DNA shows that they were actually wildcats, not truly domesticated ones. According to the new study, real domesticated cats did not leave Africa until about 2,000 years ago.
This discovery changes earlier ideas. In the past, many scientists believed that cats were first domesticated in ancient Egypt around 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. Cats were respected there and often appeared in art and stories. Later, a cat buried (埋葬) with a human in Cyprus suggested an even earlier start. Other studies also believed cats followed farmers into Europe because mice and rats were attracted to stored grain.
However, those earlier studies used only mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down from the mother. This gave an incomplete picture. In the new research, scientists examined full DNA from 87 ancient cats. They found that cats in Europe before about 200 BCE were still wildcats.
Some European wildcats carried genes from African wildcats. This does not mean they were pets. Instead, it suggests that different wildcat groups mixed naturally long before domestication began.
The study suggests that domesticated cats reached Europe much later. Places like Sardinia may have been important stops. Around 2,000 years ago, both African wildcats and house cats appeared there.
Scientists believe the Romans may have helped spread cats across Europe by ship. Other ancient groups, such as the Phoenician, may also have played a role. Over time, these movements helped cats become one of the most popular pets in the world today.
8. What does the new research show about cats living in Europe 6,000 years ago?
A. They came from Africa. B. They were early house pets.
C. They lived with farmers. D. They were still wild animals.
9. What do we know about the new research?
A. It focuses on cat behavior. B. It did a survey about local wildlife.
C. It furthers our understanding of cats. D. It mainly studies modern pets.
10. What do the scientists intend to explain in the last paragraph?
A. Why domesticated cats became popular. B. How the Romans domesticated wildcats.
C. When humans started to raise cats at home. D. How domesticated cats spread worldwide.
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Humans and Wild Animals B. A New Timeline of Cat Domestication
C. Wildcats in Ancient Europe D. The Rise and Fall of Modern Animals
D
Clouds play an important part in determining the current and future temperature and global warming rate of the Earth. They cool the Earth by reflecting sunlight and warm the planet by holding heat in the atmosphere and stopping it from escaping to space.
So clouds and how they are changing with global warming are the leading source of uncertainty in researchers’ ability to predict (预测) future climate. Earth system models (ESMs) are the best tool to predict the state of the Earth in the future.
However, there is still a problem. Errors in the energy balance of ESMs can be traced to the time of day they predict clouds, according to a group of University of Wyoming (UW ) researchers.
“In a paper, we show that in ESMs, there are errors in the time of simulated (模拟的) cloud, which could have a momentous impact on the cooling effect of clouds on the Earth’s surface,” says Travis Aerson, a scientist in the UW Department of Atmospheric Science. “Finally, however, the total error in the cooling effect of clouds in ESMs is small, so the current effect is not large.”
Aerson, the paper’s lead author, explained that although the total cooling effect of clouds in the models seems close to reality, this is partly because of different errors canceling each other out. As a result, the models may give correct results, but for the wrong physical reasons. However, satellite data (数据) and a new model developed by the research team showed that errors in cloud timing can explain almost half of the mistakes in how models estimate cloud cooling.
These cloud errors increase uncertainty in predictions about how fast the Earth will warm in the future. However, they do not change the main fact that the Earth is getting warmer. The study also suggests new ideas for reducing climate change, such as making certain clouds brighter, causing more sunlight to be reflected by the clouds.
12. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The increase in global temperature. B. Reflection of sunlight.
C. The role of clouds. D. Types of clouds.
13. What problem do UW researchers find in ESMs?
A. They get cloud timing wrong. B. They mistake cloud height.
C. They overuse satellite data. D. They ignore cloud movement.
14. What does the underlined word “momentous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Informal. B. Important. C. Individual. D. Positive.
15. Why does the study mention brightening clouds?
A. To reduce prediction uncertainty. B. To question current climate models.
C. To explain how clouds are formed. D. To show a possible climate solution.

Vocabulary opens up doors to new worlds and makes learning a language fun and satisfying. ___16___. You have to put in some effort and there’s neither a magic trick nor a secret to do it. Here we put together the following points.
___17___
When you’re studying abroad, you will learn the language much faster through immersion (沉浸). But you don’t have to go abroad — you can create an inspiring and study-friendly environment wherever you are: Buy magazines or books in the new language, and watch movies.
Put the words in context
A good idea to learn more words faster is to put them in context. ___18___. That way, you know how the word is used in real life. Depending on how you learn, you can also make drawings or find images that will put the words into their natural habitat.
Learn from real-life situations
Movies, TV shows, books, or songs are not only a great source for the most common words, they can also help you memorize the vocabulary because they always come with a scene, a person, or a real-life event. ___19___. If you see a phrase or a sentence that you don’t understand, write it down, look it up and start memorizing it.
Take it to the next level
If you want to take language learning to the next level, leave enough space for mind maps with related words, synonyms (同义词) or antonyms (反义词). If you want to get the most out of your learning process, try not to translate the word into your native language. ___20___.
A. Create a learning environment
B. But increasing your vocabulary is not easy
C. Have a talk with a friend who speaks the language

One rainy night, when Victoria walked out of a fitness center, a small dog that was wet through, was sitting by the doors, staring inside. He was shaking. Victoria then walked up to him. The dog looked terrified but was friendly to her. With no one else around, Victoria knew she couldn’t leave him there. She picked up towels and covered him. Then she put him in her car and drove home.
The moment they got home, the dog relaxed. He had been outside in the rain for who knows how long. Now he was finally safe and warm. The next day, Victoria took him to the hospital. The doctor said the dog was all right. This meant Victoria could keep him.
Victoria named the dog Pluto. Pluto settled into his new home, learning routines and finding comfortable corners. Over the following months, Pluto turned from a shy dog into a confident and faithful friend. His favorite place was the carpet by the fireplace, and his gentle presence filled Victoria’s quiet house with a new kind of warmth. They often sat together in comfortable silence. Victoria read by the fire while Pluto slept quietly at her feet.
Then, one cold winter evening, their unspoken connection was tested in a way Victoria could never have imagined. After a long day’s work, she prepared a simple dinner and then went to bed early. What she didn’t know was that the kitchen stove had been leaking gas (泄漏煤气) slowly throughout the evening. As she fell into a deep dangerous sleep, Pluto became restless.
He walked around the room, touching Victoria’s hand, but she didn’t move. Pluto barked (吠叫) loud, but she remained unconscious (昏迷的). Recognizing that his usual way to warn did not work, Pluto picked up one of Victoria’s running shoes from the floor, and pushed his way through the small dog door to their neighbor Mr Jensen’s house.

I’m writing to ask for your help with a problem that has been bothering me lately.
My neighbor has been playing loud music every night, usually starting from 9 o’clock and lasting for hours. As you know, I have to study hard for my exams, but the noise makes it impossible for me to focus on my homework or review my lessons. I feel really stressed and can even feel the noise in my head.
I don’t know how to deal with this situation. Should I talk to my neighbor directly? Or is there a better way? I really hope you can give me some advice. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 Pluto ran to Mr Jensen’s house quickly and began barking. He jumped up and down anxiously, holding Victoria’s shoe in his mouth and pushing it toward Mr Jensen. Mr Jensen, noticing the dog’s unusual restlessness and the shoe, realized something must be wrong. “Is it Victoria?” he asked in a hurry. Pluto barked louder, nodding his head as if in reply. Without hesitation, Mr Jensen grabbed his coat and followed Pluto to Victoria’s house.
When Mr Jensen forced (强行) the door open, he smelled the strong gas at once. He rushed into the bedroom and found Victoria lying unconscious on the bed. Quickly, he opened all the windows to let the gas out and called the emergency number. Soon, doctors arrived and took Victoria to the hospital. Thanks to Pluto’s timely warning, Victoria recovered soon. From then on, their bond became even stronger, a silent promise of mutual protection that would last a lifetime.
