“Don’t! Please don’t,” begged the Tin Woodman, “I should certainly weep if you killed a poor deer, and then my jaws would rust again.”
But the Lion went away into the forest and found his own supper, and no one ever knew what it was, for he didn’t say it. And the Scarecrow found a tree full of nuts and filled Dorothy’s basket with them, so that Dorothy would not be hungry for a long time. She thought it was very kind and thoughtful of the Scarecrow, but she laughed heartily at the awkward (尴尬的) way in which the poor creature picked up the nuts. His padded hands were so clumsy and the nuts were so small that he dropped almost as many as he put in the basket. But the Scarecrow did not mind how long it took him to fill the basket.
The Scarecrow feared a spark (火花) might get into his straw and burn him up. So he kept a good distance away from the flames, and only came near to cover Dorothy with dry leaves when she lay down to sleep. These kept her warm, and she slept soundly until morning.

What will the home of the future look like? A team of architects (建筑师) in Hong Kong say that houses will be small, as the space is becoming more and more expensive.
They have designed “spaceflats” that are just 30 square metres in size. These flats only have three small rooms: a living room, a bathroom and a bedroom, as well as a balcony, but everything is carefully planned to make good use of the limited space.
The living room is the main room of the flat. It can be used as an office, a kitchen, even a second bedroom. There is a sofa that can be changed into a bed. The dining table can be changed into a computer desk. And, if not needed, both the sofa-bed and the table can be folded away (折叠) and put into a small space in the wall. There is a flat-screen TV, which can also work as a computer monitor. In one of the rooms, a small cooker, a microwave oven and a mini fridge are out of sight.
The other rooms are small but practical. The bathroom has a toilet and a shower. The double bed in the bedroom can also be a sofa. The balcony has enough room for two people to sit and enjoy the view from the block of flats. All the rooms have high ceilings to give as much storage space as possible, while the flat has large windows to let in enough sunlight.
“Spaceflats” are now being tested in a building in Hong Kong. “It’s wonderful,” says one resident (居民). “The flat is so well designed that you feel that there is a lot of space. ”

People choose where to live for many reasons—the house, the location, or good schools—but almost never because of who their neighbors might be. Since we can’t choose our neighbors, fences help create comfortable boundaries (边界) between homes.
According to sociologist (社会学家) Douglas B.Currivan, most people want to know their neighbors just a little bit, but not too much. Fences mark where one property ends and another begins. They let people enjoy their private space while still being able to wave hello from a comfortable distance. Fences also prevent common neighbor problems like noisy pets or children wandering into others’ yards.
Research shows that clear boundaries actually help neighbors get along better. “When property lines are unclear, arguments between neighbors are more likely, ” explains Professor Daniel Stokols. Surprisingly, fences can even improve neighborhood safety. Studies show that burglars (入室窃贼) are less likely to target homes with fences, even small decorative ones, because they signal (示意) that the owners care about their property.
However, the type of fence matters a great deal. A very tall, solid fence might seem unfriendly, while a shorter fence or a row of bushes feels more welcoming. Some people use plants or small walls to mark property lines in a nicer way. There are even “spite fences”—unusually tall or ugly fences built just to annoy neighbors, which sometimes lead to legal problems.
While fences separate properties, they can also bring neighbors together by creating a sense of security and order. One New York resident, Karen Pace, discovered this when she removed an old fence and suddenly felt uncomfortable without her private outdoor space.
Good neighbors are careful about each other’s space when putting up fences, and good fences help neighbors maintain just the right amount of friendly distance.
36.What is the main purpose (目的) of fences in marking properties?
A.To decorate the yard beautifully.
B.To attract wildlife to the neighborhood.
C.To provide shade for outdoor activities.
D.To show where one person’s land stops and another’s starts.
37.According to the article, why do burglars avoid homes with fences?
A.Because fences are too expensive to climb over.
B.Because fences signal that owners care about their property.
C.Because fences make too much noise when they are touched.
D.Because fences are always dangerous.
38.What did Karen Pace discover when she removed her old fence?
A.Her neighbors became much friendlier.
B.She felt uncomfortable without her private outdoor space.
C.Her property value increased immediately.
D.Burglars started targeting her home.
39.What can we infer about “spite fences” from the text?
A.They are built to protect pets. B.They are designed to be beautiful.
C.They are meant to annoy neighbors. D.They help neighbors become closer.
40.Which of the following would be the BEST title for this article?
A.The History of Fences B.Why We Should Remove All Fences
C.Good Fences Make Good Neighbors D.The Most Expensive Fences in the World

Yu Wenying,a household (家喻户晓的) name in her community in Central China’s Hubei province, is easily recognizable (可辨认的) by the jingling keys at her waist, with each one belonging to an elderly person she cares for.
To the elderly in the Jianshelu community in Huangshi city, Yu is more than a neighbor. Instead, they view her as a family member.
Yu’s journey began when she started assisting her neighbor, Zhang Meiyu, an elderly woman who suffered multiple strokes (中风). As Zhang’ s health declined, her son struggled to care for her alone. In 2006, Yu then volunteered to assist with bathing, medication, laundry, cooking and house cleaning.
Soon, more elderly residents wanted her to help them. Pan Suhui, a senior who had lost a child and suffered injuries from a fall, became the second person Yu cared for. With her own family unable to provide consistent (持续的) support, Pan depended on Yu for three months until she recovered.
As Yu’s responsibilities grew, so did the number of keys she carried—up to over 40, each symbolizing trust and responsibility.
“I used to worry about locking myself out. But once I gave my key to Yu, I felt much more at ease,” says Li Fengyin, an 80-year-old woman who has lived alone for years. “She still visits me often, and I feel very supported.”
For Yu, these keys signify the trust placed in her. “Handing me the keys means placing absolute trust in me, and that drives me to work even harder.”
In return, the elderly express their thanks in small but meaningful ways, such as sharing homemade meals or reminding her to dress warmly when the weather turns cold.

A.How long; far from B.How far; away from
C.How long; far away from D.How far; far away from

40.最佳标题题。根据“Good neighbors are careful about each other’s space when putting up fences, and good fences help neighbors maintain just the right amount of friendly distance.”并通读全文可知,文章主要讲述篱笆通过明确边界促进邻里和谐,即好篱笆帮助保持友好距离。故选C。

In return, the elderly express their thanks in small but meaningful ways, such as sharing homemade meals or reminding her to dress warmly when the weather turns cold.
