Bada Shanren was known for his simple but powerful style. 5 3 2 4 dough figurines (面人) 5 3 2 4 These are Huishan clay figurines from Wuxi, China, a traditional folk art with a history of over 400 years. The left doll holds a fish, which means “may you have surplus (年年有余)” in Chinese culture. The main image is a goat decorated with flowers and patterns. On its back is a large flower, which is a symbol of beauty and prosperity(繁荣) in China. This paper-cut may be made for the Year of the Goat, bringing wishes for luck, happiness, and a good harvest. 5 calligraphy(书法) 4 This is Preface to the Lantingji Xu (《兰亭集序》), one of the most famous pieces of Chinese calligraphy. It was written by the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi in the year 353 AD, over 1,600 years ago. It is written in a free, flowing style called “running script (行书)”. mural (壁画) 5 This is a famous mural from Mogao Caves, Dunhuang in China. It was made over 1, 500 years ago.
