P24-3
Ballet is a special form of art. It's a French word. It means “to dance”. There's no talking or singing in ballet. Instead, the ballet dancers express themselves through dance. They also use other forms of body language, such as gestures and facial expressions, to tell stories.
Ballet began in Western Europe in the 15th century. Today it has become popular all over the world.
One of the most famous ballets in the world is Swan Lake. The dancers tell the story and express different feelings through their body language. For example, when the Prince meets the Swan Queen, she tells him her story. When she meets someone who will love her forever, she will return to her human self. The dancer holds her hands to her heart to mean love and points to the sky to say forever.
Ballet is beautiful, but it's not easy to become a ballet dancer. Many of the dance moves are very difficult. For example, dancers need to make difficult jumps and kick their legs sideways. Female ballet dancers even need to balance on the tips of their toes. Training usually starts at an early age, and the dancers have to go through a lot of training to keep their bodies strong. They have to practise very hard every day. They learn to use their bodies to express all kinds of feelings in a beautiful way.

P24-4
For example
Besides ballet, I know Peking Opera. It is a traditional Chinese performing art.
Peking Opera actors use their body language to tell stories and express their thoughts and feelings in many ways:
Hand gestures: They have a rich system of hand movements to show different meanings and actions.
Eye expressions: Actors use their eyes to express the character's inner feelings, such as love, anger, or sadness.
Body movements: They walk, stand, and pose in
special ways to show the character's personality.
Facial makeup: Different colors and patterns on
their faces represent different types of characters, like heroes or bad people.
Have you ever given a presentation in class? How did you feel? What body language did you use?
Useful body language in presentations
smile and stand up straight
use natural hand gestures
Move your hands to emphasize key points
Maintain eye contact and interact
...
One student is practising his presentation in front of two classmates. Read the dialogue and find out Student 1's body language problems.
1
S1: ... How can I improve my presentation?
S2: I liked it, but maybe you should think about your body language.
S1: OK, what do you think I should do?
S2: You look a bit nervous when you speak. I think you should try to breathe slowly and relax. Besides, you're always looking at your notes. If you want to connect with your audience, you'd better make more eye contact with them.
S1: Oh, that's a good suggestion!
S3: Also, why don't you try using gestures to emphasize your points?
S1: That's a good idea!
S3: You don't keep your back straight during your presentation. If I were you, I would stand up straight.
S1: I'll try that next time. Thank you both!

Three students are giving presentations in class. How can they improve their body language? Choose one of the situations below and role-play making and accepting suggestions.
Wang Jun is very nervous, and his hands are shaking during the presentation.
Wu Di is looking at the whiteboard all the time. He is not looking at the audience.
Han Li is looking down while she is talking. She is also playing with her hair as she speaks.
2
Use a relaxed tone and facial expressions to make your dialogue more natural.
Quick Role-play Tips
Step 1: Clearly identify the body language problem in each situation.
Step 2: Think of 1–2 suggestions, and use the sentence patterns we learned in this lesson (e.g., Maybe you should... / If I were you, I would...).
Step 3: Practice your role-play and perform it in front of the class.
以 Wu Di 场景为例
Wu Di is looking at the whiteboard all the time. He is not looking at the audience.
Step 1— Identify the problem:
He always looks at the whiteboard and never makes eye contact with the audience.
Step 2—Prepare suggestions with target sentence patterns:
Suggestion 1: Maybe you should look at your classmates from time to time instead of staring at the whiteboard.
Suggestion 2: If I were you, I would use some natural hand gestures to interact with the audience.
Step 3: Role-play dialogue
S1: I just finished my presentation. Do you have any suggestions for me?
S2: I liked your content, but maybe you should look at your classmates from time to time instead of staring at the whiteboard.
S1: That's a good suggestion! What else?
S2: If I were you, I would use some natural hand gestures to interact with the audience.
S1: Thanks! I'll try that next time.
