Several years ago,Dawn Larkin-Wallace,a mom of three, started running to lose 10
pounds to 20 pounds of baby weight that just wouldn't go away. She thought once she dropped
the weight, she'd be off the treadmill ()What she could have never imagined is that
she'd become a marathon runner who inspired her three children to start running, too.
"We're just a running family,"said Larkin-Wallace of Baldwin,New York,who is part
of a running club.First,Larkin-Wallace signed up her 15-year-old daughter Kayla,a high
school student, for a race after realizing that the amount of running she did during her soccer
games was the equivalent (of five kilometers.
With the positive pressure and the competitive spirit that exists in the household,
Larkin-Wallace said with a laugh,"Of course,her brother and sister decided that that's
something they wanted to do,too."Kimberly,11,and Kevin Jr.,9,ran their first 5K's this
year.
Larkin-Wallace said her goal is for healthy living to become a lifestyle among her kids,
who also play a range of sports from basketball to soccer. What she's also very mindful of is
encouraging her children, especially her girls,to feel good about their bodies.A recent study
found that two in three 13-year-olds worry about gaining weight.
"It's always on my mind, and I have to help my daughters understand that their body
type is different from others and that the difference doesn't make one better or more right
than the other,"she said during a conversation with her family in their home."As long as
we're healthy and taking care of ourselves,we should accept ourselves."

your body appears.

For a long time, scientists were unsure about when and where cats were domesticated(
)New research now shows that the time of cats becoming pets is much later than people
once believed.
Researchers studied DNA from many ancient cat bones found in Europe and Turkiye.
These cats lived as early as 6,000 years ago.At first, scientists thought they were early house
cats. However, the DNA shows that they were actually wild cats, not truly domesticated
ones.According to the new study, real domesticated cats did not leave Africa until about
2,000 years ago.
This discovery changes earlier ideas. In the past, many scientists believed that cats were
first domesticated in ancient Egypt around 4,000 to 5,000 years ago.Cats were respected
there and often appeared in art and stories.Later,a cat buried (with a human in
Cyprus suggested an even earlier start.Other studies also believed cats followed farmers into
Europe because mice and rats were attracted to stored grain.
However, those earlier studies used only mitochondrial DNA,which is passed down from
the mother. This gave an incomplete picture. In the new research, scientists examined full
DNA from 87 ancient cats. They found that cats in Europe before about 200 BCE were still
wildcats.
Some European wildcats carried genes from African wildcats. This does not mean they
were pets.Instead,it suggests that different wildcat groups mixed naturally long before
domestication began.
The study suggests that domesticated cats reached Europe much later.Places like
Sardinia may have been important stops.Around 2,000 years ago, both African wildcats and
house cats appeared there.
Scientists believe the Romans may have helped spread cats across Europe by ship.Other
ancient groups,such as the Phoenician,may also have played a role.Over time,these
movements helped cats become one of the most popular pets in the world today.
28.What does the new research show about cats living in Europe 6,000 years ago?
A.They came from Africa.
B.They were early house pets.
C.They were still wild animals.
D.They lived with farmers.
29.What do we know about the new research?
A.It focuses on cat behavior.
B.It did a survey about local wildlife.

D.It furthers our understanding of cats.
30.What do the scientists intend to explain in the last paragraph?
A.Why domesticated cats became popular.
B.How the Romans domesticated wild cats.
C.When humans started to raise cats at home.
D.How domesticated cats spread worldwide.

Clouds play an important part in determining the current and future temperature and
global warming rate of the Earth. They cool the Earth by reflecting (sunlight and warm
the planet by holding heat in the atmosphere and stopping it from escaping to space.
So,clouds and how they are changing with global warming are the leading source of
uncertainty in researchers'ability to predict (future climate.Earth system models
(ESMs)are the best tool to predict the state of the Earth in the future.
However, there is still a problem.Errors in the energy balance of ESMs can be traced to
the time of day they predict clouds, according to a group of University of Wyoming(UW)
researchers.
"In a paper,we show that in ESMs,there are errors in the timing of simulated (
clouds, which could have a momentous influence on the cooling effect of clouds on the Earth's
surface,"says Travis Aerenson,a scientist in the UW Department of Atmospheric Science.
"Finally, however, the total error in the cooling effect of clouds in ESMs is small,so the
current effect is not large."
Aerenson, the paper's lead author, explained that although the total cooling effect of
clouds in the models seems close to reality, this is partly because of different errors canceling
each other out.As a result, the models may give correct results, but for the wrong physical
reasons. However, satellite data (and a new model developed by the research team
showed that errors in cloud timing can explain almost half of the mistakes in how models
estimate cloud cooling.
These cloud errors increase uncertainty in predictions about how fast the Earth will warm
in the future. However, they do not change the main fact that the Earth is getting warmer.
The study also suggests new ideas for reducing climate change, such as making certain clouds
brighter, causing more sunlight to be reflected by the clouds.
【高一英语第6页(共10页)】
32.What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The increase in global temperature.
B.Reflection of sunlight
C.The role of clouds.
D.Types of clouds.
33.What problem do UW researchers find in ESMs?
A.They get cloud timing wrong.
B.They mistake cloud height.
C.They overuse satellite data.
D.They don't notice cloud movement.
34.What does the underlined word "momentous"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Informal.
B.Important.
C.Personal.
D.Positive.
35.Why does the study mention brightening clouds?
A.To reduce prediction uncertainty.
B.To question current climate models.
C.To explain how clouds are formed.
D.To show a possible climate solution.

One rainy night, when Victoria walked out of a fitness center,a small dog that was wet
through, was sitting by the doors, staring inside. He was shaking.Victoria then walked up to
him.The dog looked terrified but was friendly to people. With no one else around,Victoria
knew she couldn't leave him there. She picked up a towel and covered him. Then she put him
in her car and drove home.
The moment they got home, the dog relaxed. He had been outside in the rain for who
knows how long. Now he was finally safe and warm. The next day,Victoria took him to a
veterinary hospital. The doctor said the dog was all right. This meant Victoria could keep him.
Victoria named the dog Pluto.Pluto settled into his new home, learning routines and
finding comfortable corners.Over the following months,Pluto turned from a shy dog into a
confident and faithful friend. His favorite place was the carpet by the fireplace, and his gentle
presence filled Victoria's quiet house with a new kind of warmth. They often sat together in
comfortable silence.Victoria read by the fire while Pluto slept quietly at her feet.
Then, one cold winter evening, their unspoken connection was tested in a way Victoria
could never have imagined. After a long day's work, she prepared a simple dinner and then
went to bed early. What she didn't know was that the kitchen stove had been leaking gas
slowly throughout the evening. As she fell into a deep dangerous sleep,Pluto became
restless.
He walked around the room,touching Victoria's hand,but she didn't move.Pluto barked
(吠叫)loud, but she remained unconscious(昏迷的).Recognizing that his usual way to warn
did not work,Pluto picked up one of Victoria's running shoes from the floor, and pushed his
way through the small dog door to their neighbor Mr Jensen's house.
