When I was in primary school, I was a bit shy. What really scared(使害怕) me was speaking in front of many people, no matter if they were strangers or people I knew. It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr Bamick, who helped me get over that. That year, we had to do four oral (口头的) book reports in front of the class. Some kids were happy to do it, but I was extremely(极其地) scared. Mr Bamick noticed my fear, so he told me to do a report on a book that I was really interested in. So I did my first report on baseball.
When it was my turn to present it to the class, Mr Bamick cut me some slack and let me read the report instead of reciting it from memory. Some of my classmates laughed at me, but Mr Bamick stood up for me. By the end of the year, I had finished all four oral book reports. It wasn’t easy for me, but I did it.
Years later, I realized that Mr Bamick did me a great favor(帮助) in the sixth grade. One of the chances I got when I won a tennis tournament (锦标赛) was to make comments to the fans who came to the match. Some of those were shown live on TV and all of them were in front of thousands of people. It was still not something I liked to do most, but, with Mr Bamick’s help, I managed to get through it sometimes. Soon, I was asked to bring my favorite childhood teacher to a national event in Dallas. I was excited when Mr Bamick joined me for the event. It meant a lot to me that he was there.
Mr Bamick believed in me and helped me believe in myself. It was he who helped me become the person I am today.

25.What did Mr Bamick do when the writer’s classmates laughed at her?

Thomas Edison was a great American inventor. He was born in 1847. When he was a child, he was always asking questions and trying out new ideas. His teacher thought he was not very bright and sent him home. But his mother believed in him and taught him at home.
Edison loved reading and doing experiments. He built a small lab in his bedroom when he was 10 years old. Later, he worked as a newsboy on a train. He used a small corner of the train as his lab. One day, a fire broke out in his lab, and the train conductor was very angry. He threw Edison and his equipment off the train.
Edison never gave up. He kept inventing things. His most famous invention was the light bulb. He tried more than 1,000 times before he made a working light bulb. When someone asked him if he was discouraged by all the failures, he said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 1,000 ways that won’t work.”
Edison had more than 1,000 inventions in his life. He changed the world with his ideas and hard work. He once said, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”
26. Why did Edison’s teacher send him home?
A. Because he was too noisy in class. B.Because he was not very bright.
C.Because he was often late for school. D.Because he didn’t finish his homework.

30.What does the sentence “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” mean?
A. Geniuses are born with great talent. B. Hard work is more important than talent.
C. Inspiration is the most important thing. D. Geniuses don’t need to work hard.
D
For many years, there’s been a “10-minute” rule for homework. It means each grade should have no more than 10 minutes of homework every day.
But some schools are now letting their youngest students take a break. A Massachusetts elementary school(小学) said it will try a no-homework program for the new school year. They’ll make the school day two hours longer to give more in-class lessons. “We want kids to go home at 4 o’clock, tired,” said Jackie Glasheen, the school’s principal(校长). “We want them to enjoy time with their families and go to sports like soccer or football practice.”
Different places have different ways to deal with homework. Even education experts(专家) don’t agree on what’s best for kids. So these local talks are hard to understand.
The most complete study on homework so far was done by Duke University professor Harris Cooper. He found that doing homework and student success are linked(相连) in a good way — students who do homework do better in school.
Cooper’s study looked at how homework affects(影响) test scores. This link was stronger for older students (7th to 12th grades) than for younger ones. For younger students, the connection between homework and how well they do was weak.
Even though the link is weak for young kids, Cooper says a little homework is useful for all students. “Second-graders shouldn’t do two hours of homework each night,” he said, “but they also shouldn’t do no homework.”
However, Cathy Vatterott, an education professor(教授) at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, thinks there’s not enough proof(证据) that homework helps elementary school students. “Just because two things are related(相关的) doesn’t mean one causes the other,” she said. “Does homework make kids do better, or do kids who do better just do more homework?” Vatterott believes we should focus more on making homework better, and she supports not giving homework to younger kids.
31.What will Kelly Elementary School try in the new term?
A. More PE classes B. “10-minute” homework C. More football classes D. No homework
32.According to Cooper’s study, who does better in school?
A. Older students (7th-12th grades) who do homework
B. Younger students with lots of homework
C. Older students with no homework
D. Younger students with no homework
33.What does Cooper think about homework for second-graders?
A. They should do no homework at all
B. A little homework is good
C. They should do two hours of homework every day
D. Homework quality doesn’t matter
34. What’s Cathy Vatterott’s opinion(想法) on homework for elementary students?
A. Homework is very helpful for them
B. They should do more high-quality homework
C. There’s not enough proof to show homework helps them
D. Homework makes them achieve more
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Is Homework Good for Students? B. How to Improve Homework Quality?
C. Should Schools Ban All Homework? D. Do Students Need After-school Activities?
