Reviving Ancient Architecture
Ancient architecture is a precious part of human cultural heritage. However, over time, many ancient buildings have suffered from damage due to natural disasters, wars, and the passage of time. Reviving ancient architecture has become an important task to preserve our history and culture.
One of the main methods of reviving ancient architecture is through restoration. Skilled architects and workers study the original design and construction techniques of the ancient building. They use traditional materials and methods as much as possible to repair and rebuild damaged parts. For example, in the restoration of ancient temples in China, workers often use traditional brick-making and wood-carving techniques. They carefully match the colors and textures of the new materials with the old ones to ensure that the restored building looks as close to the original as possible.
Another approach is to use modern technology to assist in the revival process. 3D scanning and printing technology can be used to create accurate models of ancient buildings. This helps architects understand the structure and details of the buildings better. They can then use these models to plan the restoration work more precisely. Additionally, modern construction materials with advanced properties can be used in a way that doesn’t damage the historical appearance of the building. For instance, some new types of mortar can provide better strength while still being compatible with traditional building materials.
Reviving ancient architecture also involves promoting public awareness and appreciation. Many countries organize cultural events and tours around ancient buildings. These activities not only attract tourists but also educate people about the importance of protecting and reviving ancient architecture. Schools can also include courses on ancient architecture in their curriculums, inspiring the next generation to care for these historical treasures.
16.What is the main purpose of reviving ancient architecture?
A.To build new modern buildings B.To preserve human cultural heritage
C.To make more money from tourism D.To change the original design of buildings
17.How do workers restore ancient temples in China?
A.By using only modern materials
B.By changing the original design completely
C.By using traditional techniques and matching materials
D.By using only new construction methods
18.What role does modern technology play in reviving ancient architecture?
A.It damages the ancient buildings
B.It makes the restoration work more difficult
C.It helps in creating models and planning restoration
D.It replaces all traditional restoration methods

①The first half of the year 2024 has seen a lot of new products, such as smart phones with new CPUs and self-driving cars. We, however, should know that these products aren’t inventions with new technology. They are just things using old technology which appeared long ago: the first CPU was produced in the 1960s and even the technology of self-driving is over 50 years old. It’s time for us to face the cold fact that the creation of new technology is coming to a halt (停滞).
②In fact, there hasn’t been much new human technology since the 1980s. And the reason for the difficulties in technological creation is simple: the easy creations have already been made, and now the hard ones are still on the way.
③For example, in the early 19th century, Samul Morse invented the telegram (电报) on his own within weeks. However, when it comes to the 20th century, a scientific breakthrough (突破) like nuclear power plants (核电站), took more top scientists many years to make. That leads to the slowing-down and even the halt of new technological creations.
④ ▲ . Two serious problems could be waiting for us. One is that the human population may be forced to stop growing, because limited (有限的) land on the earth can only produce limited food. Unless new technology appears to help double the food production, we can’t afford the ever-growth of the population.
⑤Another is that traveling freely among the stars may never come true. As we know, this kind of travel needs 85% of lightspeed or higher. With our present technology, rockets today can only fly at 1.5% of lightspeed, which stops us from exploring the outer space.
⑥So how can we turn this dark and hopeless future into a bright one? Talented young inventors are using AI to put together the knowledge of countless scientists. Brave researchers on biology are working on super brains, which may help humans have much better memories and thinking abilities. Actually, we all should be responsible for the scientific breakthrough. Only through the efforts of all us humans can we have a bright future.
19.How does the writer show it’s harder to make new creations now in Paragraph 3?
A.By comparing facts. B.By listing numbers.
C.By telling stories. D.By asking questions.
20.Which is the best sentence to be put in the ▲ ?
A.Human population may be badly influenced by the halt.
B.The result of technological halt can be quite worrying.
C.Technological halt could have both good and bad results on us.
D.New technology will be brought to a bright future.
21.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Smart phones are inventions with new technology.
B.Rockets in the future will be able to fly at 85% of lightspeed.
C.It’s us humans’ duty to realize the science breakthrough.
D.AI and research on biology may lead new technology to appear.
22.What’s the best structure for this passage?
A. B.
C. D.
C
In February 1950, Hua Luogeng, a famous Chinese mathematician (数学家), wrote an open letter to all Chinese students studying in the US while he was returning to China. The letter moved many people and showed the strong patriotism (爱国精神) of many overseas (海外的) Chinese scientists who were willing to return to their homeland.
The documentary (纪录片) Return tells the story of many scientists who decided to go back to China in the 1950s. “It not only focuses on their historical backgrounds but also shows their feelings and a deep sense of patriotism,” said Li Zheng, the documentary’s director.
Return shares many little-known stories of these scientists. In Hua’s case, many people don’t know how important his work was in the early development of computer science in China. In March 1950, Hua left his job at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and returned to China. At a time when few people knew about computers, Hua already understood their influences on scientific progress. The next year, he became the director of the Institute of Mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and set up China’s first computer research team. Li said Hua’s story moved him. “Hua was more than just a mathematician. He had big ideas and was very brave, especially for his time.”
Talking about the influence of Return on young people, Li said, “I hope teenagers will learn more about history from this documentary and be encouraged by the spirit of these scientists. Today’s young people live in a well-off society, but we must never forget the achievements of those who came before us.”
23.What did Hua’s open letter mainly show?
A.His maths achievements in the world.
B.His teaching methods in maths.
C.His travel experiences around the world.
D.His strong love for his motherland.
24.When did Hua leave Princeton University?
A.In January 1951. B.In March 1950.
C.In February 1950. D.In March 1949.
25.What can we learn about Hua from Li’s description in Paragraph 3?
A.He was too old to remember anything. B.He disliked what he owned in the USA.
C.He wanted to study computers in China. D.He was far-sighted and had a strong will.
26.What is the purpose of the documentary Return?
A.To explain how computers can work so well.
B.To compare China with the USA in the 1950s.
C.To honor scientists’ patriotism and achievements.
D.To present modern teenagers’ laziness in learning.

The Great Sphinx of Giza
Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza (吉萨狮身人面像) was built around 2,500 BC. But John Anthony West says that it’s much older. If he’s right, “everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations (文明) would have to be completely revised,” he told a magazine.
West, a writer and film-maker, first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago, as most experts believe.
West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down (磨损) over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.
Wait a minute? Water? How could that be? The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for millions of years! However, it was very green long ago. If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong, it’s important to challenge accepted ideas. That’s how science progresses.
West gave some advice for kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research. Don’t always believe everything your teachers tell you. Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.
27.What does the underlined word “revised” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Connected. B.Created. C.Changed. D.Controlled.
28.From West’s research, we can know the Sphinx was worn down by ________.
A.sand B.water C.wind D.heat
29.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The place where West did his research.
B.The period when the Sphinx was built.
C.The reason why West holds his opinion.
D.The technology which was used to build the Sphinx.
30.Which of the following may the writer agree?
A.Science progresses through giving different opinions.
B.Egyptian civilization should be earlier than we thought.
C.One should do some research before giving their opinions.
D.Kids should ask lots of questions and believe what their teachers say.

And others are given to charity stores (慈善商店), which is 53 for recycling and reusing resources than burning or burying them.
However, these methods still fail to solve the problem of fashion waste. In some 54 , the waste even causes more serious environmental pollution. So California has passed a new law to deal with 55 fashion waste. Under the new law, clothing businesses in California must stick to serious production standards and set up a special group, and the group will keep working 56 it has built hundreds of collection stations across the state to collect people’s unwanted clothes.
B. 阅读下面短文,根据括号内所给的汉语注释写出单词的正确形式,每空一词。
Hayden Roland is a 12-year-old boy. He’s crazy about animals and has plenty of pets. He has two dogs, two 57 (兔), and two pigs.
Because of his love for animals, Hayden 58 (创建) a youth volunteer group called Wagging Tails in Montana, the US. The group is based at an animal adoption (领养) centre. Pam Volk works at the centre. She says the centre 59 (坚持) to helping pet owners when they can no longer care for their pets.
Pam has known Hayden for years. He has 60 (完全地) given away his birthday money and volunteered at the centre before. In 2022, he even won a big award for his kindness. So when Hayden wanted help, Pam was happy to 61 (支持) him.
At first, Wagging Tails had only three members, but 62 (逐渐地) there are 32 volunteers! Once a month, the volunteers meet at the centre after school to help out. They help in many ways: washing pet bedding, buying pet food, walking dogs, and making an 63 (努力) to make warm beds for stray cats (流浪猫) in winter.
Hayden’s mum, Aria Roland, takes 64 (自豪) in these young volunteers a lot. “They aren’t afraid to share ideas or help animals. Their work 65 (提供) me with hope for the future of animals,” she says.
第三节 语法填空(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,在空格处填入一个适当的词或填入括号中单词的正确形式。
For years, most people believed plants lived quiet, passive (被动的) lives. However, recent research 66 (reveal) a surprising truth: plants are constantly “talking” and interacting in ways we are just beginning to understand.
A plant’s primary means of communication is chemical. When attacked by insects, many plants release 67 (chemical) into the air. This is not just a simple reaction; it’s a sophisticated warning system. Neighboring plants that detect these signals then start 68 (produce) their own defensive chemicals. Studies show a plant under threat can communicate 69 (effective) than we once imagined, triggering defenses in plants several meters away.
In one key experiment, scientists designed some brilliant experiments 70 (prove) this phenomenon. They placed aphids (蚜虫) on a tomato plant and watched. Soon, nearby, untouched plants also began preparing 71 (them) for attack by raising their toxin levels. This showed the message was being received. The 72 (one) clear evidence came from this simple but clever test.
73 underground network formed by fungi (真菌) acts like the internet, connecting plant roots. Through this “Wood Wide Web,” plants can share nutrients and information. A strong, old tree might, for example, help a weak seedling by sending it sugars 74 this network. 75 this connection is cut, the seedling’s chances of survival drop greatly.
This hidden conversation challenges us to look at the plant world with new respect. Plants are not just passive background objects; they are active participants in a complex, silent dialogue that sustains life on Earth.

【答案】16.B 17.C 18.C

B
A. B.
C. D.
【答案】19.A 20.B 21.D 22.C
【难度】0.4
【知识点】科学技术、议论文
【导语】本文介绍目前新技术创造停滞的事实,呼吁人类要努力,我们才能有一个光明的未来。
19.细节理解题。根据“For example, in the early 19th century, Samul Morse invented the telegram (电报) on his own withinweeks. However, when it comes to the 20th century, a scientific breakthrough (突破) like nuclear power plants (核电站), took more top scientists many years to make.”可知,作者通过比较事实表明现在很难进行新的创造,故选A。
20.推理判断题。根据“Two serious problems could be waiting for us.”可知,可能有两个严重的问题在等着我们,所以此处引出技术停滞带来的不良结果,选项B“技术停滞的结果可能相当令人担忧”符合语境,故选B。
21.推理判断题。根据“Talented young inventors are using AI to put together the knowledge of countless scientists. Brave researchers on biology are working on super brains, which may help humans have much better memories and thinking abilities.”
【答案】27.C 28.B 29.C 30.A
根据“Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza (吉萨狮身人面像) was built around 2,500 BC. But John Anthony West says that it’s much older.”
根据“West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down (磨损) over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.” 可知,他们的研究表明,狮身人面像多年来是被水磨损的。故选B。
29.主旨大意题。第四段开头以“Wait a minute? Water? How could that be?”引出疑问,随后解释狮身人面像位于撒哈拉沙漠,该地区已经干涸了数百万年了。但在那之前,它是绿色的。接着提出“If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.”如果水确实侵蚀了狮身人面像,West认为它一定是在几个世纪前建造的。整段内容都是在解释West为什么认为狮身人面像更古老,即他坚信自己的观点的原因。故选C。
30.观点态度题。根据“West gave some advice for kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research. Don’t always believe everything your teachers tell you. Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.” 故选A。
第二节 任务型阅读(共5题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面材料,从所给的A-E五个选项中选择正确的选项(其中一项是多余选项),将序号填入31-34题,并回答35题。

Quadrant 3 (not important but urgent): She put Mary’s birthday party here. It was urgent. According to her priorities (优先级), she found she had no time for non-important tasks. ____34____.
Quadrant 4 (not important and not urgent): She included Facebook chats. To avoid wasting time, she didn’t chat on weekdays.
◆ Review your week
When the week ends, review your time management. Like Lucy, she didn’t waste time and finished the tasks of this week nicely.
A.She listed reading in it
B.Put your tasks into four quadrants
C. Decide on what’s important and urgent

Should Schools Offer Free After-School Interest Classes?
Now more and more schools provide free after-school interest classes for students. People have different opinions on this.
Some people support it. These classes help students develop hobbies and discover their potential. They also make campus life richer and reduce students’ time spent on electronic products. If students arrange their time properly, the classes won’t affect their studies.
However, others hold opposite views. They argue that the classes take up students’ self-study time and may influence homework completion. Besides, running these classes will increase schools’ operational and resource pressure. What’s more, students can develop their interests by relying on off-campus resources.
In my opinion, schools can offer these classes. They are beneficial to students’ all-round development.

A. B.
C. D.

So how 39 are sonic booms made? You can think of air as being like water. When something 40 through water, you can see ripples (波纹). If the object moves very quickly, the ripples start to 41 each other.
The same thing happens in the air, 42 it can’t be seen. When the object moves faster than the 43 of sound, the air is pushed hard, and it changes like the ripples on water. This will create a sound wave that is very 44 . That is a sonic boom.
45 , lots of things can make sonic booms. When you go to the park and see people play with whips and tops (鞭子和陀螺), you might 46 a tiny sonic boom when they use the whip. Planes that travel faster than the speed of sound 47 also make sonic booms.
A strong sonic boom can 48 damage to windows or buildings, 49 the possibility of this is very low, according to the US Air Force. The loud sound can also 50 people on the ground and even cause hearing loss. That’s why supersonic airplanes are only allowed in times of war.

Every year, millions of tons of used clothes are thrown away. Some are burned, and the smell always makes people living nearby feel 51 . Some of them usually 52 in landfills (垃圾填埋场).
