He played in key role in passage of the Thirteenth Amendment(修正案), which ended slavery in America. On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln gave the speech, which later became known as the Gettysburg Address, at the dedication(落成仪式) of a cemetery(公墓) for the soldiers who had died during the Battle of Gettysburg.
