I had started my job search with high hopes, attending CV writing workshops and
exploring a range of professional directions,including patent law,data analysis,research,and
medical writing.I applied to positions broadly, confident I would land something soon.
But the rejections started to roll in-at least I didn't face complete silence. The initial
excitement of getting interviews soon turned into deep frustration, and I began to wonder
whether the skills I had gained through my Ph.D.studies were truly valuable.
To relieve the pressure of completing my Ph.D.and the nonstop job hunt,I decided to
organize a 30-mile walking challenge along the Thames Path.I hoped that being outdoors in the
countryside with my walking group would help me relax and forget my worries. It was a goal I
had never attempted before, but I felt motivated by this ambitious plan. Our first walk brought
out 50-plus walkers, and we seemed to be off to a great start. However,by the third training
walk the group's enthusiasm had started to dim.
I was discouraged but carried ahead, determined to complete the challenge.Soon, though,
the training walks I had carefully planned with my partner fell through.I pushed myself harder
than I should have, squeezing in two tough 20-mile walks in one month and setting the stage for
my hip injury.
My professional prospects weren't looking any better.I was starting to panic about not
having a job lined up,and my injury only worsened my mood. But maybe it was time to try a
new path.
I previously ignored government jobs because of their difficult application process, but I
decided to give them a chance.I learned how to describe my academic background properly
and soon received interviews and finally two job offers. The crushing weight I had felt for
months finally lifted.
At the same time,I was still wrestling with my walk plans, which I had hoped would give
me enough time to recover and complete the challenge. But with the stress of my job search
behind me,I could see with a clearer head that I could find satisfaction by revising my goal.I
高三年级英语试卷第6页(共12页)
didn't want to disappoint the small but determined group of walkers who had stuck with me,but
they supported me on a compromise:a shortened walk of 14 miles,a distance I could manage
comfortably.
It did not matter that I had to change plans for my walk or my job search. In the years I
spent doing my Ph.D.,I realized that the challenge is only part of the story. It is how you cope
with setbacks that determines your route to success.

Your Nose Does Help Pick Your Friends
Human beings maintain the polite fiction that we're not constantly smelling one another.
Despite our efforts to the contrary,we all have our own odors(),pleasant and less so,and
if we are like other land mammals, our particular smell might mean something to our fellow
humans.
Researchers investigating pairs of friends whose friendship "clicked"from the beginning
(found evidence that each person's body odor was closer to their friend's than
expected by chance. And when the researchers got pairs of strangers to play a game together,
高三年级英语试卷第7页(共12页)
their body odors predicted whether they felt they had a good connection
Inbal Ravreby,an olfaction()researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel
was curious whether particularly swift friendships were connected with similarities in smells.
She recruited()20 pairs of click friends.Next the subjects were asked to stop eating foods
like onions and garlic, which may affect body odor, for a few days and to bathe with
冈
刘
unscented(无气昧的)soap. Then they put on a fresh,clean,lab-provided T-shirt and sleep in it
so it gets smelly, before handing it over to the scientist for review.
2025
Mrs.Ravreby and her colleagues used an electronic nose to assess the smells rising from
each T-shirt,and they had 25 other volunteers assess the similarity of the smells as well. They
were interested to find that the friends'odors were more similar to each other than those of
2026
strangers.
However, there are many reasons friends might smell alike-eating at the same restaurant,
having a similar lifestyle and so on-making it difficult to say if the smell or the basis for the
知
friendship came first. To probe this, the researchers had 132 strangers, all of whom were given a
T-shirt to wear first, come into the lab to play a mirroring game.Afterward, they filled out
贸
questionnaires about whether they felt a connection with their partners.
The similarities of their odors, strikingly, predicted whether both felt there had been a
positive connection'71 percent of the time.
There are many mysteries for researchers to study about how our personal fragrances,in
all their complexity, interact with our personal lives. Each breath of air may say more than you
know.

A.personal odors are key to maintaining deep friendships
B.people pick friends at least partly on the basis of body odor

47.Why did the researchers conduct the"mirroring game"with strangers?

B.Because they required volunteers to wear scented T-shirts during the process.
C.Because researchers can rule out the influence of existing friendships in this way.
D.Because they were to measure the accuracy of electronic nose assessments.

Imagine a world without English majors. In the last decade, the study of English and
history in college has fallen by a third.According to a recent story in The New Yorker,"The
End of the English Major."this decline is largely a result of economic factors:which
departments get funded or what students earn after graduation, etc.Fields once wide open to
English majors, such as teaching, academia, publishing, the arts, the media have collapsed or
become less desirable.Facing huge academic debt and an uncertain job market, students may
find majors like communication arts and digital storytelling more realistic.
And yet another important and discouraging part of the story is that the study of English
itself may have lost its allure(吸s引力),even among kids who enjoy reading. They are learning
to hate the subject well before college. Both in terms of what kids are assigned and how they
are instructed to read it,English class in middle and high school-now renamed as language
arts,or language and literature-is often a suffering. It's as if once schools teach kids how to
read, they devote the remainder of their education to making them dread doing so.
熹
A typical high school assignment now involves painstakingly marking up text with colored
pencils in search of"literary devices"-red for imagery and diction, yellow for tone or mood,
etc.Students are instructed to read even popular fiction at an extremely slow pace in the service
of close-.reading in unison(完全一致地).They're warned not to skip ahead. No one is supposed
to feel excited!

When I was in public high school in the olden'80s,we read "The Red Badge of Courage"
and"The Scarlet Letter,"with multiple forays(首次尝试)into Shakespeare.We were assigned
Faulkner,Joyce,Conrad and Henry James, authors whose work opened my mind and tested my
abilities of comprehension and interpretation.
But if anyone had suggested that I be offended by a nearly all-male reading list,I would
have been hurt.Couldn't girls read books by men just as well as boys could? At the same time,
my teacher's expectation that I could make sense of"A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man",
felt like a vote of confidence.'Students were encouraged not to avoid or attack these books but
to learn from them.
51.Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons for the decline of English major?

D.Current teaching mode discourage kids from reading out of interest.

In January 2025,my weight had hit an all-time high.I was in my early twenties, but my
body seemed to be in its nineties. For example,it would take me months to get over a simple
cold, and only a few weeks later,I would catch it again. And I would often wake up at night,
choking, because I'd stopped breathing in my sleep.
Previous to that,I had made my diet plans but ended up failing in those attempts. And I
was ashamed. When my weight had hit a new record,I knew something had to be done.I
eliminated any beverage (from my diet.It was a baby step, but I knew every little bit
helped.
By the month of February,my pants were no longer cutting into my stomach, and it gave
me the courage to step on the scale. When the needle landed on the number 240,I was
determined to see that number disappear forever.I told my friends about the decision.Instead of
a New Year's goal,I told them it was just for the month February, which was to see what I could
accomplish in the shortest month of the year.To my surprise, they thought it was a great idea
and encouraged me.
My weight-loss plans included an intense exercise plan that I knew I could stick to for just
a few short weeks. On the days when I felt lazy,I would remind myself that it was only for a
month. But I had more days when I was enthusiastic. When March finally came,I was surprised
to find I had lost eighteen pounds! That week I bought a few new clothes because wearing them
could remind me of how far I could come. And being reminded of that was the biggest
motivation for me to go on losing weight.
In March and the following months,I stuck to new plans and became lighter and lighter.
Now,I still battle my weight every day.I try not to rush myself though. With patience and
persistence,I witnessed what baby steps could truly accomplish
