I never thought a handshake before and after a job interview was a form of etiquette (礼仪), and no one told me. In fact, it is 46 to have a three-second handshake that starts the interview and another one right after it.
Once, I was at a job 47 . After the interview, I had already got out of the manager’s room when I realized I had forgotten to shake his hand with a “thank you”. So I 48 to his office, went straight to him and offered my hand. What a disaster! I felt so embarrassed (尴尬的). I thought I must look 49 at that moment. Clearly, I failed the interview. Whether it’s putting your elbows on the table or talking with a mouth full of food, everyone has to watch their manners at some time. Manners have developed over thousands of years and are always changing. Around 100 years ago, children weren’t allowed to speak unless parents spoke to them first. Now young people can make their voices heard in many places.
Manners also mean different things in different countries. Eating food loudly is considered rude in some countries, but in others it’s a sign that people are enjoying their meal. What do you think? Are manners important?
Many old people think so. They say kind words and actions are good to everyone. When someone has good manners, it shows they care about other people’s feelings and want them to be comfortable. In other words, well-mannered people make the world a happier place. Manners also help keep everyone healthy, which is why people should cover their mouths when they cough and keep dirty feet off seats.

Chinese New Year painting, or nianhua in Chinese, is a kind of traditional painting to be put up on walls and windows during the Spring Festival. Its bright colors and different subjects show the Chinese great expectation for happiness and wealth.
Chinese New Year painting is an old handicraft. Its original (最初的) form was a picture of a door god during the Tang Dynasty. Later, more subjects such as the Kitchen God, women and babies were included. As the Chinese New Year arrives, every family puts up its New Year paintings in order to say goodbye to the past and welcome the future. One of the most famous woodblock New Year paintings comes from Yangjiabu of Shandong Province. It covers all kinds of themes and forms. They reflect people’s everyday life.
As time went by, people found New Year paintings old-fashioned. Besides, they considered the door god too frightening to hang in their homes. They wanted something more artistic. So in the middle of the 1980s, the sales of New Year paintings dropped greatly.
Usually, colorful woodblock New Year paintings are produced in four steps. Firstly, artists draw a simple sketch (素描) on the paper. Secondly, they make the simple sketch on the wooden board and print a few samples. Thirdly, they add color to the sample. Lastly, when the preparation is finished, the printers paint color on the color board. And then put paper on the wooden board and brush the paper. Reading Lu Xun’s articles has become common memories of Chinese students. From a young age, we study his articles such as From Baicao Garden to Sanuei Study and My Old Home. We get to know Runtu and Kong Yiji under his pen.
Lu Xun was born on Sept. 25, 1881, and his real name is Zhou Shuren. So many years has passed, but Lu Xun’s life experiences still encourage young people. He went to Japan to study medicine as his father died of illness. But seeing the dark side of Chinese society of the early 20th century, he decided to pick up a pen and write stories to show the dark side of society and tradition, trying to enlighten(启迪) people. Lu Xun also liked woodcut paintings(木版画). He started the New Woodcut Movement in the 1930s, encouraging more young artists to focus on woodcut paintings. He thought they were a useful art form to spread knowledge, culture and new ideas.
Though Lu Xun’s works were written in his time, they are still a part of pop culture. His words are often used in stories, videos, emojis and creative products. Lu Xun is also one of the most talked-about writers on the video website. By now, there are more than 13, 600 videos about him with 170 million views, according to the site.
Chinese writer Zhi An thinks it’s a good thing that his voice is still heard. In fact, Lu Xun was the one who was never afraid to draw attention. “Lu Xun was brave enough to fight against the rules. If you wanted him to be silent, he would speak out,” Zhi An wrote.
