People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not as similar as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 0℃. Most of the time, it stays below zero.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Matthew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on April 6th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic (北极圈 ) on foot. They may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water (水道) called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.
4.According to the passage, what happened about 100 years ago?
A.Two men succeeded in getting to the North Pole.
B.Temperatures in the North Pole went above 0℃.
C.The environment in the North Pole suddenly became worse.
D.The North Pole changed into thick ice because of the temperatures.
5.What does the underlined word “uninhabited” probably mean in Chinese?
A.气候恶劣的 B.充满危险的 C.困难重重的 D.无人居住的
6.Why does the ice break into two opening lanes of water?
A.Because the temperature suddenly drops.
B.Because the water under the ice is frozen.
C.Because the ocean water under the ice moves.
D.Because the surface is covered with lots of ice.
7.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The thick ice in the North Pole.
B.A difficult trip to the North Pole.
C.The real situation in the North Pole.
D.The differences between the North Pole and the South Pole.
【答案】4.A 5.D 6.C 7.C
【导语】本文介绍了北极圈的寒冷天气和真实地域信息。
4.细节理解题。根据“About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Matthew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on April 6th, 1909.”可知,大约100年前,有两个人成功地到达了北极,故选A。
5.词句猜测题。根据“Few people can live in such a difficult place.”可知,此处表示“很少有人能住在这么艰难的地方”的含义,所以推测uninhabited意为“无人居住的”。故选D。
6.细节理解题。根据“The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water (水道) called ‘leads’.”可知,冰下海水的运动常常会引起冰面上许多不同的变化,有时冰分裂成两个开放的水道。故选C。

My family had a wonderful holiday in China a few years ago. We visited several cities in eleven days.
Our first stop was Beijing, and Nancy was our guide. She led us to all the important places, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the hutongs. Her English was perfect, and she could explain ( 解释 ) their history and culture well. We were really thankful for her work as it added value to our trip.
Next, we went to Chengdu and enjoyed everything there. Like everybody else, we fell in love with the cute pandas.
But the days in Zhangjiajie turned out to be our favourite part of the trip. We headed straight to Tianmen Mountain on Day One. With its glass-bottomed bridges and cliff paths, this place is not for weak hearts. But the picturesque (优美的) views took my breath away. I couldn’t help taking pictures. By the end of that day, I had several hundred more pictures on my phone. We were not so lucky the next day as the weather turned bad. It was harder for us to see the scenery clearly. That scenery inspired the mountains in the film Avatar (《阿凡达》), and we were looking forward to seeing it with our own eyes. It was such a pity.

Qomolangma, at 8,848.86 meters, is the highest mountain in the world. Do you know how Qomolangma started to form? Qomolangma’s rocks once sat at the bottom of the ocean. Around 45 million years ago, the Indian plate (板块) moved and hit the Eurasian plate. It made the land rise up and Qomolangma formed.
Do you know that Qomolangma keeps growing? According to a new study by scientists from University College London (UCL), Qomolangma grew by 15 to 50 meters because of a geographic event about 89,000 years ago. However, the UCL team found that Qomolangma is growing faster these years. They estimated (估计) this to be between 0.16 and 0.53 millimeters each year!
Now the height of Qomolangma rises a little bit every year because of big forces (力量) under the ground. It is also affected by weather conditions such as ice and snow. And rivers also affect it. The Arun River, which runs close to Qomolangma, has been cutting through rocks and washing away the land over time. This makes the mountain lighter, allowing it to rise like a boat when weight is taken away. The process of this rising is isostatic rebound (地壳均衡回弹). This means the Earth’s surface moves up or down when something heavy is taken away or put on.
Qomolangma is not the only mountain that changes. The UCL team said that nearby mountains, Lhotse and Makalu, the fourth and fifth highest in the world, are also growing a little bit each year. How amazing nature is!
12.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By showing a fact. B.By telling a story.
C.By asking a question D.By listing numbers.
13.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.How high Qomolangma is. B.Where Qomolangma is.
C.How Qomolangma formed. D.How old Qomolangma is.
14.What is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
15.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Climbing to the top
B.Qomolangma is getting taller
C.Research on Mount Qomolangma
D.Go and visit Mount Qomolangma

Fight the Winter Chills (寒冷)
Winter can be hard time for many people because of its short days and cold weather. However, you can learn to enjoy the season.
Darker months may be difficult.
During winter, there is less daylight and it gets dark earlier. It’s often rainy, windy and cold, so being outside isn’t much fun. If you draw a picture of a happy day, it would probably have a bright, sunny sky. So you might find darker winter days more difficult.
Countries in northern Europe (北欧) have even less daylight than in the UK in winter. People there don’t wish it was brighter or warmer. They accept it and find joy in winter. The Danish (丹麦人) enjoy “hygge” which is a nice feeling of being at home with loved ones. They enjoy delicious food and drink with friends.
Hug (拥抱) the winter months.
You can’t change the weather, so make it more enjoyable. Wrap up in warm clothes, hats and gloves. Get out and enjoy the sunshine. You still can have fun even if it’s cold outside. Think about how you can feel great when you get home, too. Put on a coat, hold a hot water bottle, watch a movie and warm your stomach with soup and drinks.

B.Because the water under the ice is frozen.

7.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The thick ice in the North Pole.
B.A difficult trip to the North Pole.

After saying goodbye to China’s first national forest park, we headed to Shanghai for the last leg of our trip. We had a great time, and the journey still feels like it happened yesterday.
