Passage 1
Hiking is good for people’s health. So many hikers like
to hike in the countryside, forests and mountains. Just
walking for fun is the first kind of hiking. Some people like
to hike in city parks or just on sidewalks.
A hike can take a few hours or weeks. People just need
clothes and shoes that are fit for the weather. In the
beginning, hikers should start with walks that they can do
3
in a few hours. As they get stronger, they can go on
overnight hikes. Later, they can hike longer than that. They
can make their hike last for several days or weeks. For
safety, it is a good idea for hikers to hike with one or two
friends. Hikers should also carry a map. It’s useful.
Backpacking is another kind of hiking. People carry
food, clothes and other things in a backpack. Backpackers
can stay for many days in the places where there’s no shop.
They carry what they need in their bags.
Now, put on your hiking shoes and go on a hike!#1.3

Passage 3
As an ancient Chinese sport, the game of jianzi is quite
popular now. Most people in China may have seen or even
played this sport at least once in their lifetime.
The sport of jianzi first appeared in the Zhou Dynasty.
It is believed that jianzi was from a football-like game called
cuju. At that time, many children made jianzi at home,
using round pieces of tin(锡片) with chicken feathers
17
(鸡毛). During the Han and the Song Dynasties, jianzi
became the most popular. In 1933, China hosted the first
national jianzi competition. In 1984, jianzi was officially
(正式地) seen as a Chinese national sport.
Nowadays, jianzi is getting more and more popular
around the world. You can see people in foreign countries
play this feathered sport. And it gets different names in
different countries, such as Federfussball in Germany and
Jegichagi in Korea.
And do you know how to play jianzi? It seems easy.
You just need to keep the jianzi afloat(漂浮的) with your
feet. While it is true that it needs players to use their feet
to keep the jianzi afloat, using other body parts, such as
your knees and chest, is also allowed. Although you may not
plan to play jianzi anytime soon, learning about it is
important to better understand Chinese culture. And since
it’s simple and relaxing to play jianzi, why don’t you get a
jianzi to develop your jianzi skills from now on?#1.3

Passage 4
Small talk like “Have you eaten yet?” or “It’s a nice
day, isn’t it?” is not meaningful to some people. But
scientists believe that it is more useful than it may seem to
be.
A study from the University of Chicago showed that
people who talked to strangers had a nicer journey. Those
who sat quietly or kept playing their phones had a worse
25
journey. In the study, scientists asked people at Chicago
train stations to start talking with other travelers. Most of
them refused to do so at first because they didn’t think they
could get a friendly answer. But the result was opposite.
Most strangers were happy to talk with others.
“People are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the
scientists, said. “It turned out that they also wanted to know
and communicate with others.” Besides making you happy,
chatting with strangers also helps you feel connected with
your environment around you. Some studies found that when
people often smiled at, made eye contact(接触) with and
talked with other people, they would have a sense of
belonging instead of feeling lonely.
And if you are already comfortable enough to make
small talk with strangers, you should try to develop it into
something “bigger”. A study showed that having a deep and
meaningful talk gave you more happiness.#1.3

Passage 5
Do you feel a little guilty(内疚的) about your daily,
mid-afternoon nap(午休)? Actually, research shows that
taking a nap after lunch can be good for your brain. But
keep in mind that the length of your nap is important.
The midday nap has always been important in China.
Data from iiMedia Research Group shows that 67.38% of
the Chinese population often takes a midday nap, 30.49%
34
sometimes does and only 2.13% of peoplenever does. Some
places in China even have a strong nap culture. According
to a survey, more than 60% of people in Shanxi, Chongqing,
Anhui and Guangdong take a midday nap. Taking a nap
after lunch has its roots(根源) in Traditional Chinese
Medicine. It is believed that resting at noon can be good for
health.
According to another study, taking a 30 to 90 minutes’
nap seems good for the brains of older adults. Researchers
found that people who nap for 30 to 90 minutes do better
in word memory than those who don’t nap or nap for more
than 90 minutes.
Longer naps may also cause some other problems. For
example, people who take longer naps may feel groggy
(昏昏沉沉的) right after they wake up, so they may feel
less awake for a long time. Another problem is that people
who take long naps during the day may have insomnia
(失眠症) at night.
Research says that the best time to take a nap is
between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. because of people’s sleep-wake
cycles. And the nap should last between 20 and 40 minutes.
In general, people who sleep too much or too little may

Passage 6
We all make mistakes. Some of them are big, while
some are small. We can correct them and learn from them.
One thing is for sure: When we have done what we can, we
must move forward.
The problem with obstacles(障碍) and challenges is
that we may be stuck in them. Sometimes, we remain in
that space. Often, we have to really pull ourselves out of a
situation so that we can move forward.
43
Sometimes we also feel guilty(内疚的) because of our
mistakes. But no matter what the situation is, we must
always remember that there is a future waiting for us—one
that we can change through our choices.
In these times, we must remember the saying, “Don’t
look back, because you aren’t going that way.”
Some people forget to look at the bright side or the
other chances waiting for them. They tend to(倾向于)
focus on their past and how much it has hurt them. But the
best way to reach your goal is to leave the past behind and
just move forward.
Cars move forward to reach their destination(目的地),
so why should you go the opposite way? The only way you
will be successful is that you stop looking back and start
moving forward. Don’t stress yourselves out over the past
when there is a new future waiting to be unlocked. Go for
your dreams by accepting the present and looking forward
to the future.#5

Passage 7 .
Do you love snacks? Well, who doesn’t? Eating healthy
snacks at the right time can make you full of energy and
provide your body with important nutrients(营养物). Here
is some advice on how to eat snacks wisely.
Timing is key. Having snacks between meals gives us
energy. Eating them just before a main meal may not be a
good idea as this can affect your appetite(食欲).
51
Even if you pick light snacks, it’s better not to eat them too
often during the day.
Smart snack choices are important, too. When you are
thirsty, drink water or clear soup instead of sweet drinks. If
you feel a little hungry, choose healthy foods like corn,
sandwiches, whole-wheat(全麦) bread and dried fruits
without sugar.
Some snacks taste great but aren’t good for your health.
Try to avoid those with a lot of sugar, such as candy, ice
cream and fruit juice. These foods will harm your teeth and
make you put on weight. Also, stay away from salty and
fatty foods like French fries, onion rings, sausages and
potato chips. Many health problems can be brought about
by eating too much of these foods.
Next time you reach for snacks, keep these suggestions
in mind. Healthy habits today lead to a happier tomorrow,
even with snacking!#1.4
