Reading Comprehension—Judging Views and Attitudes in Reading Comprehension 课 题 Judging Views and Attitudes in English Reading Comprehension 教学课时 第 1 课时 教学目标 Knowledge Objectives Students will be familiar with question forms and common attitude words of this question type in the college entrance examination. Students will know the typical language features of different views and attitudes (positive, negative, objective, indifferent) expressed in the text. Ability Objectives Students can master three effective skills: key-word method, tone analysis method, context inference method. Students can correctly judge the views and attitudes towards a certain thing or phenomenon expressed by different subjects in the text according to the content and language style. Core Competence Objectives Improve students' discourse analysis and logical reasoning ability. Cultivate students' ability to perceive emotional tendencies in the text and form careful reading habits. 教学 重难点 Key Points Master the methods to judge views and attitudes based on key words, language tone and context. Memorize common attitude words and distinguish their emotional tendencies. Difficult Points Distinguish the subtle differences between similar attitudes (e.g. objective and neutral, critical and negative). Judge implicit attitudes through indirect expression in the text. Accurately identify the subject of views and attitudes in the text (i.e. who holds the view/attitude). 教学方法 Lecture method, case analysis, group work, practice and consolidation 学情分析 Senior Three students have mastered basic reading skills and have a certain vocabulary reserve, which enables them to understand the general meaning of the text. However, they lack systematic understanding of the question type of judging views and attitudes, and often fail to accurately capture emotional tendencies in the text. In terms of ability, students are good at judging explicit attitudes but weak in inferring implicit attitudes through the choice of words, sentence patterns and context. They also easily confuse the views and attitudes of different subjects in the text and lack the ability to screen and distinguish key information. In learning habits, students often pay attention to the literal meaning of the text while ignoring the perception of emotional tendencies, which leads to low accuracy in solving such questions. 教学过程 备注 (改进建议) Step1. Lead - in (5 minutes) Display real exam questions about identifying the source of articles from past college entrance examination papers. Tell students that judging views and attitudes is a frequent and important question type in reading comprehension, which tests students' ability to perceive emotional tendencies in the text and analyze the text in depth. 设计意图:通过展示历年高考真题,强调观点态度题是高考英语阅读理解中的高频考点,突出其重要性,让学生直观感受题型特征,激发学生对本节课的重视和学习兴趣。 Step 2. Analysis of Question Characteristics (5 minutes) Task 1 Present common question stems on PPT: What is the attitude towards... in the text? How does the person mentioned in the text feel about...? What does the text suggest about the view on...? The tone of the passage when talking about... can be described as...? Which of the following best describes the attitude towards... in the text? Task 2 Classify and display common views and attitudes and typical vocabulary on PPT: Positive: supportive, optimistic, appreciative, favorable, positive, enthusiastic Negative: critical, pessimistic, opposed, unfavorable, negative, skeptical Objective: objective, neutral, factual, impersonal, unbiased Indifferent: indifferent, unconcerned, neutral (no obvious emotional tendency) 设计意图:系统呈现观点态度题的常见设问方式,帮助学生全面认识题型;分类梳理不同态度的典型词汇,为学生解题提供词汇支撑,做好知识铺垫。 Step 3 Explanation of Problemsolving Skills (15 minutes) 1.The problem-solving techniques ① Key-word method: Capture emotional adjectives, adverbs, verbs and conjunctions in the text (e.g. fortunately, unfortunately, surprisingly, criticize, praise) to judge views and attitudes. ② Tone analysis method: Analyze the tone of the relevant part through the choice of words, sentence patterns and rhetorical devices (e.g. rhetorical questions express strong emotional tendency, ironic language expresses negative attitude) to infer views and attitudes. ③ Context inference method: Combine the overall content of the text, the context of the relevant part and the logical relationship between sentences to infer implicit views and attitudes, and accurately identify the subject of the views and attitudes. 2. Case Analysis Case 1(Key-word method) [真题 1](2021 年全国甲卷 阅读理解 D 篇) The victors’ standards for joining the genius club have been rooted in social and cultural practices. History is written by the victors, and those victors have tended to define genius in terms of their own abilities and achievements. The great mathematicians, philosophers, and inventors we celebrate today were often white men of European origin. This is not because non-European or non-male geniuses did not exist, but because they were unacknowledged and rejected by the victors. 题目1:What does the author think of victors’ standards for joining the genius club? A. Supportive B. Critical C. Objective D. Indifferent Case 2(Tone analysis method) [真题2](2024 年全国乙卷 阅读理解 C 篇) Some people claim that banning plastic bags will bring great inconvenience to daily life. But is this really a reason to ignore the severe environmental pollution they cause? Every year, millions of plastic bags end up in oceans, killing countless marine creatures. Is convenience more important than the survival of our planet? 题目2:What is the author’s tone towards the view that banning plastic bags brings inconvenience? A. Optimistic B. Pessimistic C. Skeptical D. Neutral Case 3(Context inference method) [真题 3](2022 年全国甲卷 阅读理解 D 篇) Andrew Reynolds, a ferry driver in Sydney, said, “I’ll miss these old boats. Catamarans are faster, but they don’t have the elegance of the old ferries, and they’re not as fun to drive.” Shirley Fitzgerald, the city’s official historian, told me that in its rush to modernity in the 1970s, Sydney swept aside much of its past, including many of its finest buildings. “Sydney is confused about itself,” she said. “We can’t seem to make up our minds whether we want a modern city or a traditional one.” 题目3:What is Shirley Fitzgerald’s attitude towards Sydney’s rush to modernity? A. Approving B. Opposing C. Uncertain D. Favorable Step4. Practice (15 minutes) 1. Grouping: Divide students into several groups, with 4 - 5 students in each group. 2. Practice Task Distribute practice materials with exercises and ask students to complete the questions of judging views and attitudes within the specified time. During the students' problem-solving process, the teacher patrols and guides, observes the students' problem-solving situations, and provides timely guidance for students with difficulties. 练习题1(2021年新课标I卷 阅读理解C篇) Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. What is the author's attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence? A. Favorable B. Intolerant C. Doubtful D. Unclear 练习题2(2023年新高考I卷 阅读理解D篇) Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous. Imagine how much better our world could be if more groups followed this example of reasoned dialogue and collective wisdom. What is the author’s attitude toward Navajas’ studies? A. Unclear B. Dismissive C. Doubtful D. Approving 练习题3(2022年全国乙卷 阅读理解C篇) As many office workers adapt to remote work, cities may undergo fundamental change if offices remain underused. Who will benefit from this shift? Some wealthy people have invested in properties in rural areas. They now can live in the countryside and commute to work online. For small businesses in rural areas, new residents mean new customers. But the shift also brings challenges. Rural areas may lack the infrastructure to support large numbers of people working from home. What is the author’s attitude towards the shift caused by remote work? A. Critical B. Objective C. Optimistic D. Pessimistic 3. Group Report Representatives of each group speak in turn to report the discussion results of the group, and explain the reasoning process and the basis for choosing the answers (e.g. which key words, tone or context information are used to judge, and who the subject of the view/attitude is). Other groups can make supplements and raise questions about the reasoning process. 4. Teacher Summary Summarizes and comment on the discussion results of each group, affirms the correct reasoning methods and advantages, points out the common mistakes and deficiencies (e.g. confusing the views and attitudes of different subjects, ignoring key emotional words), and further emphasizes the key points and precautions of judging views and attitudes. 5. The teacher summarizes and comments on the discussion results of each group, affirms the advantages, points out the deficiencies, and further emphasizes the key points of judging the source of the passage. Step 5. Summary (3 minutes) Lead students to review the key content of this class: the common question forms of view and attitude questions, the classification of common attitudes and typical vocabulary, and the three core problem-solving skills (key-word method, tone analysis method, context inference method). Emphasize the key precautions for solving problems: accurately identify the subject of views and attitudes in the text, pay attention to implicit expressions, and combine the overall context to judge. Encourage students to continuously apply the learned skills in future reading exercises to improve their problem-solving abilities. 设计意图:梳理本节课的重点知识和解题技巧,帮助学生形成清晰的知识体系,强化方法运用意识,让学生明确解题的关键和注意事项。 Step6.
