Near the village of Hengkeng in China’s Zhejiang province, there’s an open-air theatre made of bamboo. However, no bamboo was actually cut to build the theater. Instead, living bamboo trees were bent and roped to achieve it.
Designed by Xu Tiantian, the theatre has been highlighted in an exhibition in New York. Titled “Reuse, Renew, Recycle: Recent Architecture from China”, the exhibition showcases a new generation of Chinese architects who are promoting social and environmental sustainability by transforming industrial buildings, recycling materials, and reinterpreting ancient building techniques. They are inspired by the use of traditional materials and a stronger connection between architecture and nature.
“We want to redirect the global conversation to ecological approaches of architecture,” says Martino, the founder of the exhibition. For Chinese architects, the word “sustainability” means following basic principles that revolve around harmony with nature or the continuation of the past. In the city of Guilin, Vector Architects transformed an abandoned sugar factory into a hotel complex. And in Beijing, Zhang Ke of ZAO Standard Architecture has proposed a series of independent living units integrated into one of the city’s Hutong courtyards.
Compared to earlier architects who often shied away from cultural associations with traditions, Chinese architects are now adopting traditional materials in innovative ways. “Contemporary construction techniques frequently lead to the unexpected dialogue between tradition and progress,” Xu says.
Over the past decade, China has begun to develop its own architectural identity. For Martino, the exhibition is an opportunity to highlight this shift and the environmental benefits associated with it. “In the West today, we tend to see architecture as part of the problem,” he says, in reference to “the large carbon footprint in the construction process.” “But these projects in China give us hope and the belief that architecture can be part of the solution.”
1. How was the bamboo theatre constructed?
A. By shaping living bamboos. B. By employing artificial substitutes.
C. By applying advanced technology. D. By adopting imported bamboo materials.
2. What does the New York exhibition primarily focus on?
A. Unadapted historical architecture preservation.
B. Innovative eco-cultural heritage combinations.
C. Commercial complexes targeting foreign investors.
D. Conventional buildings from major Chinese cities.
3. Why are the examples in Paragraph 3 mentioned?
A. To prove Chinese architects to be creative.
B. To compare architectural projects in different cities.
C. To emphasize the use of traditional materials in practice.
D. To illustrate Chinese architects’ sustainable project practices.
4. What can we infer from Martino’s words about Western architecture?
A. It gives rise to environmental issues. B. It reduces carbon footprint.
C. It upsets the ecological balance. D. It draws on Chinese designs.

The sun hangs heavy over central Iraq in the late afternoon, painting the ruins of Babylon in heat and light. Dust rises from the ground in soft clouds, creating a scene that seems older than time itself. In this moment the city feels both empty and timeless, its silence broken only by the visitors who have come to stand in the footprints of kings.
Once, Babylon was the jewel of Mesopotamia, the city that gave its name to entire eras — the Old, Middle, and New Babylonian periods. It was here where grand temples and palaces were built, and where poets and historians imagined one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Hanging Gardens. Ancient Greek and Roman writers described them as a green paradise(天堂), watered by artful pumps that lifted water from the Euphrates River. According to tales, Nebuchadnezzar, then King of Babylon, had them built for his queen who longed for the forested mountains of her homeland.
For some Iraqi archaeologists(考古学家), the gardens are more than fairy tales. Some believe the gardens were located near the city of Hillah, about a two-hour drive south of the capital Baghdad, while others point to Nineveh, hundreds of miles to the north. For travelers, however, the debate hardly matters. Standing among the ruins, it takes a good imagination to think of the gardens that left no marks to follow.
In recent times, conservation work has been carried out to restore parts of Babylon. With the many challenges the site faces, it is often individuals rather than institutions that keep Babylon’s stories alive. We met a 22-year-old tour guide Hashem, who was enthusiastic about introducing Iraqi history to foreigners. He graduated from the University of Babylon with a degree in biomedical engineering, and after that he turned to tourism, where his knowledge and command of English came in handy.
Beyond its broken walls, Babylon continues to cast its spell. Visitors come and express admiration, wondering how the Hanging Gardens once rose from the desert plain. The ruins may be gone some day, but the tales will live on.
5. Why does the writer describe the ruins of Babylon in paragraph 1?
A. To explain the reasons for its destruction.
B. To highlight its heavy boring atmosphere.
C. To create a contrast with its splendid past.
D. To express admiration for its great history.
6. What do archaeologists disagree about regarding the Hanging Gardens?
A. Its location. B. Its origin. C. Its designer. D. Its influence.
7. What does the author want to show by telling Hashem’s story?
A. The restoration work provides job opportunities.
B. Ordinary people contribute to preserving history.
C. Tourism is successful in areas with a rich culture.
D. The country is in need of energetic young people.
8. What does the underlined phrase “cast its spell” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Remain in ruins. B. Disappear over time.
C. Hold great charm. D. Make people puzzled.

1. She sat there, ________(chew) her pencil nervously.
2. Emma treasures the old necklace as it’s her most valuable ________(possess) from her grandmother.
3. Deep in sorrow, the man wondered how ________(fetch) help, pacing up and down in the room nervously.
【答案】to fetch
故填to fetch。
4. It is surprising that there are still many people in the world ________(starve) to death each year; that is, many people die for lack of food.
5. Cecilia let out a sigh, and sank ________ into a chair.
【答案】down
故填down。
6. But what makes this Asian renaissance? The answer lies in a unique blend of visionary leadership, economic growth and a culture of discipline and ________(resolve).
7. Please find some other place, no ________(park) is allowed here.
8. As the sun began to rise, casting a golden hue on the park’s traditional architecture, the volunteers gathered at the Zhuzi Cultural Park Square, their red and blue vests ________(contrast) vividly with the lush green mountains for the opening ceremony.
“their red and blue vests ___________ (contrast) vividly with the lush green mountains”是独立主格结构,contrast(与……
9. As we got there, the lake ________(dot) with sailboats.
【答案】was dotted
故填was dotted。
10. The interviewee could feel his heart ________(beat) fast during the interview.
feel sb./sth. doing sth.
1. A machine can now not only beat you at chess, it can also outperform you in debate.(用倒装句改写)
________ ________ ________ a machine now ________ you at chess, it can also outperform you in debate.
Not only can; beat
not only...but also...,意为“不但…… 因此将not only放于句首,情态动词can放在主语a machine之前,,其他部分不变。故填①Not②only③can④beat。
2. Once we arrive in Shanghai, we will live in a hotel. We have reserved the hotel online in advance.( 合并为含有定语从句的句子。)
________________________________________________________________
Once we arrive in Shanghai, we will live in a hotel, which we have reserved in advance.
We have reserved the hotel online in advance. Once we arrive in Shanghai, we will live in a hotel, which we have reserved in advance。
3. We will climb up the Oriental Pearl Tower in the afternoon, and we will enjoy the whole view of Shanghai there.
________________________________________________________________
We will climb up the Oriental Pearl Tower in the afternoon, from which we will enjoy the whole view of Shanghai.
由句意知and we will enjoy the whole view of Shanghai there.中的there指的是from the Oriental Pearl Tower,所以and之后的句子是对前一句内容进行了补充说明,所以可以将and之后的句子改为介词from+which引导的非限制性定语从句的形式,修饰先行词the Oriental Pearl Tower。 We will climb up the Oriental Pearl Tower in the afternoon, from which we will enjoy the whole view of Shanghai。
4. The opposite team beat the players, but they were not discouraged.
→________ ________ ________ ________ ________, the players were not discouraged.
Beaten by the opposite team
The opposite team beat the players,去掉连词but,使用beaten by the opposite team。故填①Beaten;②by;③the;④opposite;⑤team。
5. I didn’t learn the truth until I had read your letter.
________________________________________________________________
It was not until I had read your letter that I learned the truth.
It was not until I had read your letter that I learned the truth。 It was not until I had read your letter that I learned the truth。

Titled “Reuse, Renew, Recycle: Recent Architecture from China”, the exhibition showcases a new generation of Chinese architects who are promoting social and environmental sustainability by transforming industrial buildings, recycling materials, and reinterpreting ancient building techniques.(这座剧院由徐甜甜设计,在纽约的一场展览中备受关注。
根据第三段中“For Chinese architects, the word “sustainability” means following basic principles that revolve around harmony with nature or the continuation of the past. In the city of Guilin, Vector Architects transformed an abandoned sugar factory into a hotel complex. And in Beijing, Zhang Ke of ZAO Standard Architecture has proposed a series of independent living units integrated into one of the city’s Hutong courtyards.(对于中国建筑师来说,“可持续性”这个词意味着遵循围绕与自然和谐或延续过去的基本原则。
根据最后一段中““In the West today, we tend to see architecture as part of the problem,” he says, in reference to “the large carbon footprint in the construction process.”(“在今天的西方,我们倾向于将建筑视为问题的一部分,”他提到“建造过程中产生的大量碳足迹”)”可知,从Martino关于西方建筑的话中,我们可以推断出西方建筑引发了环境问题。故选A。

C 6. A 7. B 8. C
根据第一段“The sun hangs heavy over central Iraq in the late afternoon, painting the ruins of Babylon in heat and light. Dust rises from the ground in soft clouds, creating a scene that seems older than time itself. In this moment the city feels both empty and timeless 紧接着在第二段开头写道:“Once, Babylon was the jewel of Mesopotamia, the city that gave its name to entire eras — the Old, Middle, and New Babylonian periods.
根据第三段“For some Iraqi archaeologists (考古学家), the gardens are more than fairy tales. Some believe the gardens were located near the city of Hillah, about a two-hour drive south of the capital Baghdad, while others point to Nineveh, hundreds of miles to the north. 故选A项。
根据第四段中“With the many challenges the site faces, it is often individuals rather than institutions that keep Babylon’s stories alive. 以及随后作者引用的完整例子:“We met a 22-year-old tour guide Hashem, who was enthusiastic about introducing Iraqi history to foreigners. He graduated from the University of Babylon with a degree in biomedical engineering, and after that he turned to tourism, where his knowledge and command of English came in handy.
根据划线短语所在句子“Beyond its broken walls, Babylon continues to cast its spell. Visitors come and express admiration, wondering how the Hanging Gardens once rose from the desert plain.
