Let’s look at these benefits. Learn more words and speak better When we read, we see many new words and phrases. This helps us learn more vocabulary. When we meet new words in stories, we can remember their meanings and how to use them. This makes our writing and speaking better. Focus better on tasks Reading often helps us focus for longer. When we read, we train our minds to stay on one thing for a long time. This is helpful for studying or working. Feel less stressed Reading can take us away from the stress of daily life. We can get lost in different worlds and forget our worries for a while. Studies say reading can cut stress by up to 68%. Understand others more By reading about different people and their lives, we learn about different ideas and cultures. This makes us more empathetic and open-minded. Remember things better Reading means we have to remember story details, like characters and plots. This exercise helps our memory and keeps our brains sharp. Love learning for life Reading for fun makes us curious about the world. It can become a lifelong habit to find new information and learn new things. 16. What is one benefit of reading for fun mentioned in the text? A. It can make you run faster. B. It can help you feel less stressed. C. It can get you a better job right away. D. It can make you very famous quickly. 17. How does reading help you learn more words? A. By memorizing word lists every day. B. By seeing new words in stories. C. By watching TV shows with subtitles. D. By taking online English classes. 18. Which of these is NOT a benefit of reading in the text? A. Focusing better. B. Remembering things better. C. Curing a cold. D. Learning new things for life. 19. Reading helps you understand others by ______. A. reading very fast B. learning about different ideas and cultures C. learning to argue well D. sleeping more at night 20. What does the text say about reading and memory? A. Reading doesn’t help your memory at all. B. Reading can make your memory better and your brain sharp. C. Reading only helps you remember things for a short time. D. Reading makes you forget things more easily. B We can remember music no matter how old we are. Music will probably stay with us forever, we may forget many things from the past. But music doesn’t change as we grow old. Scientists may use this to treat illness that hurt people’s memory, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Music may help these people remember things. When we listen to music, the amygdala in our brain “lights up”. This makes our brain think of music as something important. Other parts of the brain also work together to keep this “important” information. So our memory of the music can last for a very long time. Dr. Emma Gray, a psychologist at the University of Manchester, did a new study on this. She invited 150 people to take part in it. They were between 20 and 90 years old. Gray first asked them to listen to four musical pieces. Then, she told them to make a note whenever they heard the familiar phrases. They needed to make a note whenever they heard the familiar phrases. To her surprise, the older people were just as good at recognizing the phrases as the younger ones were. This showed that our musical memory doesn’t decline with age. 21.What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. Music can help people forget the past. B. Music is only important for young people. C. Music may help people with memory problems. D. Music can cure Alzheimer’s disease completely. 22.Which age group did the people in Gray’s study fall into? A. 12—18 years old. B. 18—68 years old. C. 20—90 years old. D. 86—121 years old. 23.What did Gray ask people to do first in the study? A. Watch a concert. B. Play some music. C. Listen to musical pieces. D. Write down familiar phrases. 24.What does the underlined word “decline” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Improve. B. Become worse. C. Stay the same. D. Become stronger. 25.What is the main idea of the text? A. Music can last a long time in our memory. B. Older people have better musical memory. C. How to treat Alzheimer’s disease with music. D. Why the amygdala is important for music. C We spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing all of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the issue, let’s take a look at three types of “waits”. The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most annoying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it’s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless. A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup requires a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer three minutes, remove from heat, let stand five minutes.” I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all, Forced Waiting requires patience. Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen. Turning one’s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optimists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn’t come to rely on it, wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody. We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you’re standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you’ll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don’t be desperate. You’re probably just as busy as the next guy. 26. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Waiting is a negative part of our daily life. B. There are different types of waiting with distinct features. C. We should avoid unnecessary waiting in our life. D. Waiting can be made more meaningful with patience. 27.What do we know about the Watched-Pot Wait? A. It requires a lot of self-discipline. B. It makes people feel helpless and unable to focus. C. It is the most powerful form of waiting. D. It is a voluntary type of waiting. 28.The Forced Wait is mentioned in the passage to show that ______. A. following instructions strictly is important B. it is closely related to cooking noodle soup C. it requires patience and a bit of discipline D. it is more annoying than the Watched-Pot Wait 29.What makes the Lucky-Break Wait different from the Forced Wait? A. It is mostly voluntary. B. It requires faith and hope. C. It always leads to a good result. D. It is less time-consuming. 30.What does the author suggest about waiting? A. We should try to avoid all kinds of waiting. B. Waiting can be a positive experience if we handle it properly. C. Only optimists can benefit from the Lucky-Break Wait. D. We should follow strict procedures during Forced Wait. D Hiking is a wonderful way to explore the outdoors and connect with nature. As you walk through forests, climb mountains, or follow coastal trails, you can breathe in fresh air, listen to the sounds of birds and streams, and enjoy breathtaking views that take your breath away. It is not just a physical activity but also a mental escape from the stress of daily life. One of the greatest benefits of hiking is its ability to improve your physical health. It strengthens your muscles, boosts your cardiovascular system, and helps you maintain a healthy weight. Unlike intense gym workouts, hiking feels like a fun adventure, making it easier to stick to a regular exercise routine. Additionally, being in nature has a calming effect on the mind, reducing anxiety and improving your mood. Hiking also offers excellent opportunities for social connection. Many people enjoy hiking with friends or joining group tours, which allows them to share experiences, make new friends, and create lasting memories. For those who prefer solitude, hiking alone can be a deeply personal journey of self-reflection and discovery. Moreover, hiking teaches valuable life lessons. It requires patience, perseverance, and adaptability, especially when facing challenging terrain or unexpected weather conditions. These skills translate into everyday life, helping you become more resilient and confident in overcoming obstacles. Of course, safety should always be a top priority when hiking. It is important to plan your route, check the weather forecast, carry essential supplies like water and a first-aid kit, and let someone know your itinerary. By taking these precautions, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. In conclusion, hiking is more than just a walk in the woods. It is a holistic activity that nourishes the body, mind, and soul. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a beginner, there is always a new trail to explore and a new adventure to embark on. 31.What is the main reason people go hiking according to the passage? A. To win competitions. B. To exercise and relax. C. To take photos for social media. D. To meet famous people. 32.Which of the following is NOT a benefit of hiking mentioned in the passage? A. Strengthening muscles. B. Reducing anxiety. C. Making new friends. D. Learning a new language. 33.What does the underlined word "solitude" in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Being alone. B. Being with others. C. Being in danger. D. Being in a hurry. 34.What should you do before hiking to ensure safety? A. Wear expensive clothes. B. Plan your route and check the weather. C. Go alone without telling anyone. D. Carry heavy luggage. 35.What is the writer's attitude toward hiking? A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. 【答案】21.C 22.C 23.C 24.B 25.A 【导语】这是一篇说明文,介绍了音乐对人类记忆的深远影响,以及科学家 Sarah Sauve 的相关研究,帮助读者理解音乐为何能成为唤醒记忆的重要工具。 【详解】21.细节理解题。根据第一段 “Scientists may use this to treat illness that hurt people’s memory, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Music may help these people remember things.” 可知,音乐可能帮助有记忆问题的人。A 项与原文 “we may forget many things from the past. But music...” 不符;B 项与全文主旨相悖;D 项 “完全治愈” 过于绝对。故选 C。 22.细节理解题。根据第三段 “They were between 20 and 90 years old.” 可知,研究对象年龄在 20 至 90 岁之间。故选 C。 23.细节理解题。根据第四段 “Gray first asked them to listen to four musical pieces.” 可知,研究中 Gray 首先让人们听乐曲。A、B、D 项均不是第一步。故选 C。 24.词义猜测题。根据前一句 “the older people were just as good at recognizing the phrases as the younger ones were” 可知,老年人识别音乐短语的能力和年轻人一样好,这说明音乐记忆不会随年龄增长而 “衰退”。“decline” 意为 “衰退、变差”,与 “become worse” 同义。故选 B。 25.主旨大意题。文章开篇点出音乐能被长久记住,接着介绍了大脑机制和研究,最后再次强调音乐记忆不随年龄衰退,核心是音乐能在记忆中留存很久。B 项与研究结论相悖;C 项只是文中提及的应用,非主旨;D 项是细节内容。故选 A。 C We spend a full third of our lives waiting. 【答案】26.B 27. B 28. C 29. A 30. 根据第二段中 “This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless.” 可知,Watched-Pot Wait 会让人感到无助且无法集中注意力。 28. 推理判断题。根据第三段中 “This one requires a bit of discipline... After all, Forced Waiting requires patience.” 可知,文中提到 Forced Wait 是为了说明这种等待需要耐心和一定的自律。 29. 细节理解题。根据第四段中 “This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary...” 可知,Lucky-Break Wait 与 Forced Wait 的不同之处在于,它在很大程度上是自愿的。 30. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中 “...don’t be desperate. You’re probably just as busy as the next guy.” 以及前文对不同等待类型的客观介绍可知,作者认为如果我们能正确对待,等待也可以是一种积极的体验。 D Hiking is a wonderful way to explore the outdoors and connect with nature. By taking these precautions, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. In conclusion, hiking is more than just a walk in the woods. It is a holistic activity that nourishes the body, mind, and soul. Many spend too much time on short videos and social media, missing the quiet joy and deep thinking that books bring. However, reading is a valuable habit that we should pick up again. First, reading can help us broaden our horizons and enrich our knowledge. Through books, we can travel to different places, meet different people, and learn about history, culture and science, which greatly improves our personal qualities. Besides, when we feel stressed from study or exams, reading is a perfect way to relax. It allows us to escape from the noisy world for a while and find inner peace. Moreover, reading trains our thinking skills. It encourages us to think deeply and form our own opinions, making us more rational when facing problems. In view of all these benefits, let's start reading today! The Student Union will hold a "Reading Week" next month. Let's pick up a book we like, share our favorite stories, and enjoy the wonderful world of words together. The Student Union 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
