Sport has many wonderful moments, but the finish of a marathon is one of the most exciting. It is the longest and hardest race. The name “marathon” comes from a small village in Greece. A famous battle happened there in 490 B.C. When the Greeks beat the Persians, a soldier ran more than 40 kilometres from Marathon to Athens to tell everyone the good news. When the modern Olympic Games started in 1896, the organizers knew this story. Since then, the marathon has been part of the Olympics.
In ancient times, the Olympic Games were held every four years for 1000 years. They were an important part of life. In the modern Games, we try to follow the old ideas. The best sportsmen in the world come together, and at least they are called “amateurs”. An amateur is someone who does not get money from sport. But it is often hard to say who is really an amateur. Many Olympic athletes are students or teachers of sport. They spend a lot of time training. Their governments pay for their training, travel, and “pocket money” because they want them to win. Some people think this changes the Olympics. They feel the games are now like a political marathon.
47. Where does the name “marathon” come from?
A. A Greek god B. A famous athlete C. A battle in Athens D. A village in Greece
48. Why did the soldier run from Marathon to Athens in 490 B.C.?
A. To tell people the Greeks won the battle

As people rely more and more on the Internet to store information, a question has come up: are we remembering less? If you know your computer will save the information for you, why bother to store it in your own brain? Experts are wondering whether the Internet is changing what we remember and how we remember it.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow and her research team did some experiments. They wanted to find out how the Internet is changing our memory. In the first experiment, they asked people to type 40 unimportant facts into a computer. The first group was told that the computer would save the information. The second group was told that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information much better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again later, so they did not make an effort to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people some facts to remember and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was kept in a specific computer folder. Surprisingly, people later remembered the location of the folder better than the facts themselves. When people use the Internet, they don’t remember the information itself. Instead, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory” (交互记忆).
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with bad memory because of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memory. That is to say, people are learning how to organize a lot of information so that they can get it later. This doesn’t mean we are becoming more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use our memory is changing.
52.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The Internet makes people remember less information.
B. Professor Betsy Sparrow did two important experiments.
C. The way people use memory is changing because of the Internet.
D. Transactive memory is a new idea from Sparrow.
53.Why did the second group remember the information better in the first experiment?
A. Because the information was more important to them.
B. Because they knew the computer would not save the information.
C. Because they were better at memorizing things than the first group.
D. Because the first group was distracted by the computer.
54.What surprising finding came from the second experiment?
A. People remembered the facts better than the folder location.
B. People remembered the folder location better than the facts.
C. People could not find the information on the Internet.
D. People forgot both the facts and the folder location.
55.What is “transactive memory” according to the passage?
A. The ability to remember a lot of information directly.
B. The ability to remember how to find information, not the information itself.
C. The memory that gets worse when using the Internet.
D. The memory that only computer users have.
56.What does Sparrow think about the Internet’s effect on people’s intelligence?
A. The Internet makes people more intelligent.
B. The Internet makes people less intelligent.
C. The Internet does not change people’s intelligence.
D. The Internet changes people’s intelligence in a good way.
【答案】52.C 53. B 54. B 55. B 56. C
文章依据:“Experts are wondering whether the Internet is changing what we remember and how we remember it.” “...there is no doubt that the way we use our memory is changing.”
文章依据:“The second group was told that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information much better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again later, so they did not make an effort to remember it.”
第二段明确提到 “Surprisingly, people later remembered the location of the folder better than the facts themselves.”,这是实验的意外发现。 文章依据:“Surprisingly, people later remembered the location of the folder better than the facts themselves.”
文中对 “transactive memory” 的解释是 “When people use the Internet, they don’t remember the information itself. Instead, they remember how to find it.”,也就是记住获取信息的方法,而不是信息本身。 文章依据:“When people use the Internet, they don’t remember the information itself. Instead, they remember how to find it. This is called ‘transactive memory’.”
根据最后一段,Sparrow 认为 “This doesn’t mean we are becoming more or less intelligent”,也就是互联网并没有改变人们的智力水平。 文章依据:“This doesn’t mean we are becoming more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use our memory is changing.”
57. The best sportsmen in the world come together, and at least they are called “amateurs”.
______________________________________________________________________________
58.Surprisingly, people later remembered the location of the folder better than the facts themselves.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Scientists have pointed out that over the past 100 years, the global average temperature has risen by 0.74°C, while in northern China, the temperature has increased by 1.4°C in just 50 years. China must reduce carbon dioxide emissions, as this gas is the primary driver of global warming.
Can you help slow down global warming? Absolutely! You and your family can take simple actions to cut down on the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.
Here are some practical tips to help you protect our planet:
Wear second-hand clothes. Wearing an old T-shirt from your brother, sister, or father helps save energy that would otherwise be used to produce new clothes.
Change your light bulbs. Switch to energy-saving bulbs. Remember to turn off the lights when you leave a room, and power off your TV and computer when they are not in use!
Take public transport. Taking the bus instead of driving a car saves a significant amount of oil every year.
Refuse plastic bags. Next time your parents go to the market, encourage them to use reusable baskets instead.
Open the windows. Avoid using the air conditioner and let fresh air circulate. If you must use it, set the temperature higher in summer and lower in winter to save energy.
By making small changes in your daily life, you can make a big difference. It's time for all of us to take action to save the Earth.
The Low-carbon Life of the 59.________People
The reason for global warming
Too much carbon dioxide in the air.
How to save the earth
Wear used clothes to save the energy.
Use energy-saving light bulbs and turn off the lights when 60._______ a room.
Take a bus 61._______ of driving a car.
Use 62.________ baskets when shopping.
Try to use the air conditioner less.
59.Ordinary 60.leaving 61.instead 62.reusable
文章依据:文中 “Can you slow down global warming? Sure! You and your family can take steps...”
60.根据文中 “Turn off the lights when you leave a room”(离开房间时关灯),表格中 “when 60. ____ a room” 是时间状语从句的省略形式,完整表达为 “when you are leaving a room” 或 “when you leave a room”,此处用动名词 “leaving” 符合语法和语境。文章依据:“Turn off the lights when you leave a room and turn off your television and computer when they are not in use!”
61.根据文中 “Take a bus. Taking a bus saves a lot of oil every year”(乘坐公交车,每年节省大量燃油),“instead of” 是固定搭配,意为 “而不是”,表示 “乘坐公交车而不是开车”,符合低碳出行的语境。文章依据:“Take a bus. Taking a bus saves a lot of oil every year.”
62.根据文中 “Say no to plastic bags. The next time your parents go to the market, ask them to use baskets”(拒绝塑料袋,购物时使用篮子),“reusable baskets” 意为 “可重复使用的篮子”,是对原文 “baskets” 的合理拓展,突出低碳环保的特点。文章依据:“The next time your parents go to the market, ask them to use baskets.”

B. To ask for more soldiers to fight
C. To run away from the Persians
D. To bring food to the people in Athens
49. How often were the ancient Olympic Games held?
A. Every 2 years B. Every 3 years C. Every 4 years D. Every 5 years
50. What is an “amateur” in sport?
A. Someone who is very good at sport
B. Someone who does not get paid for sport
C. Someone who only plays sport for fun
D. Someone who is a student or teacher
51. Why do some governments pay for their athletes’ training and travel?
A. To help them study at university
B. To help their country win in competitions
C. To make them become professional athletes
D. To save money for the Olympic Games
