Which story in Reader’s Digest impresses you the most?
Last year, I once came across a story in Reader’s Digest about a man lost deep in the forest in wintertime. Night was falling and he built a fire under the large fir (冷杉) tree he was using as a shelter (庇护物). Wind came in and snow that was on the fir tree slid off and put his fire out. Lesson learned? Never build a fire (or a shelter) under a tree with snow.
— Sharon Jardine, Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia
Tony Fitzjohn (“Locked in the Lion’s Jaws,” April 2023) gives his all to help ensure wild animals like Freddie can live their lives under proper care. But one can only imagine how dangerous it must be for humans to live in the wild. Tony survived an animal attack with the help of not only his fellow human beings but also Freddie, the lion, whom he raised from a cub (幼兽). My belief in mutual care between humans and animals was deepened.
— Vasudevan, India
Many years ago, I read a short line in Reader’s Digest that I decided to make a family rule at my house. We set aside an hour every day when we could reconnect, share our ups and downs — and especially share the best laughter of the day. I’m so happy I did this because it was the only quality time that we shared as a family. Some very happy memories were formed at those times.
— Lynn Sabourin, Gatineau, Quebec
I enjoyed “Fast and reliable Facts About Trains” (13 Things) in the June 2023 issue! It brought back a childhood memory to me: my mother bringing me to the dentist when I was a child. I remember snow, so it must have been wintertime, and the dentist chair. The dentist was friendly, and I believe he had to pull a rotten (蛀坏的) tooth. It reminds me to appreciate those small warm moments of life.
— Douglas Woods, Napanee, Ontario

A.To make a strict household rule. B.To follow a popular parenting style.

In a studio in Paris,42-year-old Chen Yao carefully threads a needle with bright red silk. Around her, French students lean forward, eyes wide as she demonstrates the ancient Chinese art of Shu embroidery (蜀绣) — a 2,000-year-old craft known for its perfect stitches (针法) and bright colors. “Each thread tells a story,” Chen explains, her hands moving swiftly. “In Sichuan, where I grew up, my grandmother taught me that embroidery isn’t just about beauty. It’s about preserving history.”
Chen’s journey to Paris began in 2010, when she won a scholarship to study art history. “I missed the feel of silk under my fingers,” she admits. Instead of abandoning her roots, she started hosting free workshops at local community centers. “Many French people think Chinese art is just dragon paintings or porcelain,” she says. “I wanted to show them the depth of our cultural heritage.”
The challenges were real. French students struggled with the double-sided embroidery technique, which requires identical patterns on both sides of the fabric. “At first, their works were not very good,” Chen recalls. “But I told them in Shu embroidery, patience is more valuable than speed.”
Her efforts paid off. In 2018, Chen partnered with the Louvre Museum to create a silk tapestry (织锦) inspired by its Egyptian collection. “We combined Chinese stitching with French design,” she explains. “It proved that tradition and innovation can coexist.”
Today, Chen’s studio, Silk Bridges, trains over 200 students annually. Many have started their own cultural projects. “One student is teaching Shu embroidery in Morocco,” Chen smiles. “Another is cooperating with Italian designers.”
Her philosophy is simple. Culture is like silk — soft but strong. When we share it, we weave a global tapestry of understanding.
24.How did French students feel when seeing Shu embroidery?
A.Relaxed. B.Interested. C.Bored. D.Confused.
25.Why did Chen Yao start workshops in Paris?
A.Because she wants to earn a scholarship.
B.Because she has difficulty adapting to new life.
C.Because she has a strong attachment to homeland.
D.Because she enjoys the company of her French friends.
26.Which of the following can best describe Chen Yao?
A.Talented and brave. B.Creative and determined.
C.Confident and honest. D.Humorous and attractive.
27.What can we infer from the text?
A.Traditional art should keep its pure form.
B.Cultural sharing promotes global understanding.
C.Personal success comes from problem-solving skills.
D.Embroidery technique is more important than creativity.

When we’re in trouble, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them, there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy (隐私) that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (侵犯) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand, we don’t want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their children overlook (忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list.
28.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Privacy online. B.Parents’ friend requests.
C.The generation gap. D.Social networks.
29.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Parents have realized the importance of social networks.
B.Parents feel secure about their privacy online.
C.Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
D.Social networks offer a chance for parents to communicate.
30.What may be the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent’s friend request?
A.Their parents make negative comments on them.
B.They hide something from their parents.
C.They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D.Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
31.What is the recommended approach if a teenager chooses not to accept a parent's friend request according to the passage?
A.Block the parent from sending further requests.
B.Ignore the request without any explanation.
C.Create a separate account for family members.
D.Discuss the decision openly with the parent.

The term “filmmaking” arouses Hollywood charm and luxurious backdrops (奢华的背景). But it also has an important place in anthropology (人类学), the scientific study of mankind, as one of the many tools and technologies these scientists use to understand communities, relationships, cultures and history.
During the annual Mother Tongue (母语) Film Festival, anthropological filmmaking and digital storytelling take center stage in the exploration of the healing power of language and storytelling.
Dr. Akos Ostor and Dr. Lina Fruzzetti, two filmmakers-anthropologists at Brown University, are co-creators of six of the Festival’s films. Recently, they donated nine ethnographic (民族志的) films to the National Museum of Natural History’s Human Studies Film Archives (档案) (HSFA) — a film collection within the National Anthropological Archives (NAA) that is maintained for future generations to learn more about people across the world and their global history.
“This is a moving, visual record of the world and one way in which we further the preservation of the world’s diversity for communities and researchers,” said Dr. Joshua Bell, curator (馆长) of the museum.
Anthropological films will always have a home in the HSFA, because they combine research with lived experience. “There is nothing like film to convey the rich complexity of other people’s lives outside of meeting them. The medium transports people and moves them. It’s very powerful,” said Bell.
Through visual ethnography, anthropologists strive to document social dynamics and traditions. But the field has slight differences. For example, filming can change how local people interact with each other. It might make them hold back their words and their emotions. Over time, anthropologists have adapted to this, and have come to embrace their roles as active participants in the filmmaking.
“It has shifted from using the camera as a window into a world, and instead anthropologists now use the camera as a door that local people can walk through. The creating process is much more like a dialogue (对话),” said Bell.
But even though past films were partial “windows” into societies and were shaped by thoughts of the filmmakers, they still hold value for anthropologists seeking to give their study more contexts (语境), and for communities themselves seeking to understand their history.
Since the late 60s, ethnographic filmmaking has been moving beyond its colonial (殖民地的) origins. The field now works with communities in partnerships, rather than distancing them. Anthropologists like Fruzzetti and Ostor recognize that developing long-term, trust-based relationships is crucial before any camerawork can begin.
32.Which is true about the annual Mother Tongue Film Festival?
A.It boosts digital filmmaking technology.
B.It awards a variety of international films.
C.It promotes cooperation with Hollywood.
D.It shows the cultural power of storytelling.
33.What does the underlined word “their” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A.The local people’s. B.The anthropologists’.
C.The words’ and emotions’. D.The documentaries’.
34.By comparing the camera to a “door” instead of a “window”, Bell meant that ________.
A.filmmaking requires more interaction with local communities
B.modern cameras can work in a wide range of environments
C.anthropologists are better at giving contexts to their films
D.documentaries in the past have lost their value in study
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How two anthropologists explore the power of filmmaking.
B.How filmmaking helps us better understand the world’s diversity.
C.How ethnographic films build a close connection among local people.
D.How a museum curator views the annual Mother Tongue Film Festival.

How to Get Along with Friends
Movies and TV shows make friendships seem effortless with little conflict, but real-life friendships require effort and can be complicated. 36
Be positive.
Focusing on the upside makes you a better friend. 37 And balance emotional chats with cheerful topics (books, games, funny stories) to improve friendships and moods. Lean on friends when in trouble — no need to be always positive.
Show sincerity.
38 Whether you’re getting to know each other or are being asked for your feedback, being honest and authentic with your friends will strengthen your bond with them. It’s a lot easier to get along with friends if you’re comfortable sharing your real thoughts and personality.
39
Our friends want to feel cared about. It’s natural to talk only about yourself when unsure what to say, but this might annoy them. Making an effort to learn about their lives shows your care and strengthens your bond. Ask open-ended questions about their lives and interests — this helps a lot!
Make time for each other.
Spending time with your friends has a huge impact, whether it’s for a few minutes or for several hours. Schedule fun activities with your friends, or just find time to talk for a while. You don’t need to have big outings; it can be something as simple as catching up while getting food in the canteen. 40
Real friendships aren’t the effortless ones on screen — they grow when you bring positivity, sincerity, curiosity, and time. Nurture these, and your bonds will stay strong through the years.
A.Talk more about personal life.
B.Show interest in your friends.
C.Or it can be sending them a link they might like.
D.Fortunately, a few tips can make all the difference.
E.Sharing your worries often helps friends feel trusted.
F.Yet constant complaints or hopeless talks tire friends.
G.Your friends don’t need you to be someone you’re not.

Jacky was a high school student who often felt pressured by his classmates’ fantastic clothes and expensive shoes. One Monday morning, he arrived at school wearing a new pair of sneakers (运动鞋) he’d saved up for months. “Look at Jacky’s shoes!” someone shouted, and a group of boys came to examine the brand. Jacky’s face turned red with pride.
During lunch break, Jacky heard two girls talking, “Did you see Diana’s new handbag? It must cost a fortune!” He looked at his own bag, a simple cloth one his mother had made. Suddenly, he didn’t want to eat anything. That evening, he begged his parents for a designer bag, but they gently refused, explaining money should be spent on more important things.
The next day, Jacky’s English teacher, Mrs Shirley, noticed his upset. After class, she pulled him aside and said, “I’ve observed (观察) you these days. Material things can bring short-term happiness, but it isn’t true happiness.” She showed him a photo of herself as a student, wearing a patched-up coat but holding a medal for winning a national writing competition. “This coat was my favorite because it kept me warm when I wrote,” she smiled. “Why not spend more time on meaningful things? The English Speech Contest is coming.” she added.
Jacky was silent. That night, he lay in bed, staring at his sneakers. He thought about the way Mrs Shirley’s eyes widened when she shared her own experiences.

A Chinese Calligraphy Competition
Aimed at spreading Chinese traditional culture and enriching students’ school life, a Chinese calligraphy competition was held on January 6th in Sunshine International School.
Over one hundred students took part in the competition. To begin with, they were trying their best to display the amazing art in their own ways. And some famous local calligraphers were invited to choose top ten works. Then the headmaster awarded the winners and encouraged more students to carry forward the calligraphy art.
The activity was highly praised, for it was not only a platform to show the talent, but also an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Chinese calligraphy.

The next morning, Jacky made a decision. He put on his old schoolbag made by his mother and left the new sneakers in the closet. Instead of focusing on material things, he threw himself into preparing for the English Speech Contest. He spent hours reading books, writing his speech, and practicing in front of the mirror. Whenever he felt tempted to envy his classmates’ fancy items, he thought of Mrs Shirley’s words and the photo of herself in the patched-up coat. He realized that true value came from within, not from what he owned.
Weeks later, Jacky stood on the school stage, holding a medal. He had won first place in the English Speech Contest. As he looked out at the audience, he saw Mrs Shirley smiling proudly. Jacky’s heart was filled with a sense of achievement that no pair of sneakers or designer bag could ever bring. He realized that the happiness from personal growth and meaningful accomplishments was far more lasting and fulfilling. From that day on, he never felt pressured by his classmates’ possessions again. Instead, he focused on pursuing his passions, and becoming the best version of himself.

【答案】28.B 29.A 30.C 31.D
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章围绕“青少年是否应该在社交网络上接受父母的好友请求”这一话题,探讨了代际差异、隐私边界以及应对建议等内容。
28.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? (社交网站已经成为学校走廊的延伸,所以你会把你的父母加为“朋友”,让他们看到你的在线活动和与朋友的对话吗)”及通读全文可知,文章主要围绕父母申请加孩子为好友的请求展开,说明随着社交媒体的迅速发展,越来越多的父母亲意识到社交网络的重要性,想加孩子为好友,但是对于孩子来说,这是个艰难的选择,接受或者拒绝都会让自己遭遇麻烦。故选B项。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段“However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites. (然而,越来越多的父母开始意识到社交网络在他们生活中的重要性。这种认识给了许多父母学习社交网站的动力)”可推知,父母已经意识到社交网络的重要性。故选A项。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before. (另一方面,如果你接受了,那么你可能会有一种被监视的感觉,不再像以前那样自由地评论或交流)”可知,如果孩子接受了父母加为好友的请求,他会有被监视的感觉。由此可知,青少年拒绝父母好友请求的理由可能是不愿意被父母监视。故选C项。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list. (如果你决定不将他们添加到好友列表中,与父母沟通并解释清楚,或许可以帮助减轻这种带来的负面影响)”可知,文章建议青少年如果不接受父母的好友请求,应该和父母开诚布公地讨论这个决定。故选D项。

33.词句猜测题。根据第六段“Through visual ethnography, anthropologists strive to document social dynamics and traditions. But the field has slight differences. For example, filming can change how local people interact with each other. It might make them hold back their words and their emotions. Over time, anthropologists have adapted to this, and have come to embrace their roles as active participants in the filmmaking. (通过视觉民族志,人类学家努力记录社会动态与传统。但这一领域略有不同:比如,拍摄会改变当地人的互动方式,可能让他们抑制自己的言语和情绪。随着时间推移,人类学家适应了这一点,开始接纳他们作为电影制作中积极参与者的角色)”可知, 前文“them”指代“local people (当地人)”,后文“their roles”中的“their”承接前文逻辑,对应“the local people’s (当地人的)”。故选A项。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段““It has shifted from using the camera as a window into a world, and instead anthropologists now use the camera as a door that local people can walk through. The creating process is much more like a dialogue (对话),” said Bell. (Bell说:“相机的作用已经从‘观察世界的窗口’转变了,如今人类学家把相机当作当地人可以走进来的‘门’,创作过程更像是一场对话。”)”可知,Bell将相机比作门是想说明电影制作需要与当地社区更多互动。故选A项。

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning, Jacky made a decision.

Weeks later, Jacky stood on the school stage, holding a medal.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】One possible version:

C.Or it can be sending them a link they might like.
