Happiness dawned on Chen as she suddenly could paint lovely natural scenery. “I had nothing else to do, so I just picked up the paintbrush and had a try,” Chen said.
After her stroke, Chen completed in-patient therapy(治疗)in Texas. Then she moved to New York to enroll in an experimental robotic-assisted therapy program. There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade,” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy (等级) of responsibilities and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even closer together.
Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. Sometimes this is not an equal relationship. Daughters don’t always feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. But mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers always “trump (胜过)” friends.
46.What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.differ. B.benefit.
C.prevent. D.change.
47.What can we learn from what Marina said?
A.Best friends will not spend money on her wedding.
B.Best friends will not remind her of important issues in life.
C.Her mother is wiser on account of her age.
D.Her mother is anything but her best friend.
48.Why can a mother and a daughter build a closer relationship?
A.Because they share advanced technology with each other.
B.Because they work together to support the whole family.
C.Because they experience the same values and traditions.
D.Because they have common experience in life and work.
49.What do we know from the text?
A.The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend.
B.A mother’s love brings her and her daughter a close friendship.
C.Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother.
D.The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friendship.
50.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to build a good mother and daughter relationship.
B.A mother-daughter relationship is irreplaceable.
C.Mothers want to be daughters’ friends.
D.A daughter is a mother’s best friend.
However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship.(然而,母女关系有其独特的特点,使之有别于友谊),划线词所在句是对前句的解释,即为什么母女关系有别于友谊;划线词所在句指出“责任等级和无条件的爱”使母亲和女儿无法成为最好的朋友。
Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.”
This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even closer together.(这一代母亲和成年女儿有很多共同之处,这增加了她们共享友谊的可能性。
The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other.

Bookstores in Singapore are on the decline, with major chains like Kinokuniya shutting down shops since 2019. The trend is driven by a growing shift towards digital formats like e-books. In 2023, 36.3 million physical and digital books were lent from libraries, according to the National Library Board.
If everyone relies entirely on borrowing, the book industry suffers. What many fail to appreciate is that the book industry operates as an interconnected ecosystem. Few see the labour-intensive (劳动密集型的) process: Authors pour countless hours into creating stories, followed by even more work to polish them. Bringing life to words then requires others like editors, designers and illustrators. After publication, the work continues with marketing, distribution and sales to ensure the book reaches the readers. Purchasing a book directly supports the many people involved in the bookmaking process.
Without sufficient sales, authors would not be able to continue writing as it becomes an unsustainable career. Publishers have their way of responding to the situation: They choose to play it safe, focusing only on projects they know will sell well, instead of taking chances on more diverse or creative works. This is harmful in the long term.
Physical bookstores offer much more than access to books. They host book launches and author meet-and-greets, transforming into lively spaces filled with ideas and meaningful conversations. In a world dominated by digital content, bookstores remain magical places. They are not just shops; they are dynamic meeting points where stories, people, and communities connect and interact.
There are calls for ideas such as rental subsidies (补贴) and tax breaks to help Singapore bookstores sustain themselves. From a consumer viewpoint, while it may not be practical to purchase every book we wish to read, we can continue borrowing from libraries while occasionally buying books.
Ultimately, both libraries and bookstores are essential to preserving Singapore’s reading culture: Libraries inspire a love for reading, while bookstores sustain the literary ecosystem by supporting authors, publishers, and the production of new works. To allow bookstores to disappear would be to lose an essential backbone of Singapore’s cultural heritage (遗产).
51.What mainly causes the fall of Kinokuniya in Singapore?
A.The reduced reading rate in Singaporeans.
B.The shift of consumers’ reading channels.
C.People’s increasing demand for quality books.
D.People’s interest in other forms of entertainment.
52.What does the author intend to explain in paragraph 2?
A.Why book sales matter in the book industry.
B.Why book publishing requires so much effort.
C.How bookmaking is connected with book sales.
D.How authors cooperate with other professionals.
53.What might the publishers’ risk-avoiding reactions lead to?
A.A decline in creative diversity. B.Increased investment in new authors.
C.Enhanced quality of published works. D.A rise in the publication of literary works.
54.What is the additional role of physical bookstores beyond selling books?
A.Promoting in-person social exchanges. B.Serving as a place for individual reading.
C.Hosting virtual events for global audiences. D.Encouraging electronic media consumption.
55.What does the author think about physical bookshops in Singapore?
A.They are more important than public libraries.
B.They should be replaced by online bookstores.
C.They should be responsible for the reduced sales.
D.They are vital to both literary and cultural survival.

根据第一段中“Bookstores in Singapore are on the decline, with major chains like Kinokuniya shutting down shops since 2019. The trend is driven by a growing shift towards digital formats like e-books. (新加坡的书店正在走下坡路,自2019年以来,纪伊国屋等大型连锁书店纷纷关闭。这一趋势是由越来越多的人转向电子书等数字格式推动的。)”可知,新加坡纪伊国屋书店没落的主要原因是消费者阅读渠道发生转变。故选B项。
52.推理判断题。根据第二段中“What many fail to appreciate is that the book industry operates as an interconnected ecosystem. 故选A项。
根据第三段中“They choose to play it safe, focusing only on projects they know will sell well, instead of taking chances on more diverse or creative works. This is harmful in the long term. (他们选择谨慎行事,只专注于他们知道会大卖的项目,而不是冒险尝试更多样化或更有创意的作品。从长远来看,这是有害的。)”可推知,出版商规避风险的反应可能导致图书创意多样性的减少。故选A项。
根据第四段中“In a world dominated by digital content, bookstores remain magical places. They are not just shops; they are dynamic meeting points where stories, people, and communities connect and interact. (在一个由数字内容主导的世界里,书店仍然是一个神奇的地方。它们不仅仅是商店;它们是故事、人物和社区连接和互动的动态交汇点。)”可知,实体书店的另一作用是促进面对面的社交交流。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Libraries inspire a love for reading, while bookstores sustain the literary ecosystem by supporting authors, publishers, and the production of new works. To allow bookstores to disappear would be to lose an essential backbone of Singapore’s cultural heritage (遗产). (图书馆激发了人们对阅读的热爱,而书店则通过支持作者、出版商和新作品的生产来维持文学生态系统。允许书店消失将会失去新加坡文化遗产的重要支柱。)”可推知,作者认为实体书店对文学和文化的存续都至关重要。故选D项。
第二部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
My wife and I moved into our home nine years ago. We have a yard a “rock garden”. There the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish. Very often when we have more flowers, Denise or I would plant them between the rocks, just to bring some color to the area.
Last summer I found, in the rock garden, a tiny little plant that I could not immediately recognize. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could find out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the strange plant, it appeared to be a sunflower. It looked thin and tall with only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed (除草) around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower had not started where I saw it begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
If a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability to do the same thing. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we aim to go and get what we need for growth.
We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals. Like the sunflower, it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had faith in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what we are, then other things will begin to support us. We will find a way to go under or around any “rocks” in order to realize our goals.
56.How did the yard in the author’s home look like at first? ( no more than 5 words)
57.Why did the author let the tiny plant continue growing? (no more than 10 words)
58.What does the underlined word in paragraph3 mean? (no more than 3 words)
59.What made the author think the sunflower was unusual? (no more than 15 words)
60.How does the sunflower inspire you? Please explain it in your own words. (no more than 25 words)
56.It was full of rock. Or: It was rocky and dirty. 57.To find out /see what it actually was. 58.Look after/Take care of. 59.It actually begun under a big rock and grew to reach the sun. 60.In my opinion, we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we aim to go and get what we need for growth.
根据第一段“We have a yard a “rock garden”. There the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.”( 我们有一个院子,叫做“岩石花园”。 It was full of rock. Or: It was rocky and dirty.
根据第二段“We decided to let it continue growing until we could find out what it was.”(我们决定让它继续生长,直到我们发现它是什么。) To find out /see what it actually was.
Look after/Take care of.
根据第三段“The sunflower had not started where I saw it begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.”( 向日葵还没有从我看到的地方开始生长。 It actually begun under a big rock and grew to reach the sun.
根据最后一段“We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals. Like the sunflower, it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had faith in itself that it would succeed.”(我们需要相信自己,知道我们有能力实现我们的目标。 In my opinion, we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we aim to go and get what we need for growth.

At the age of 60 Chen Lie suffered a stroke(中风). As part of her recovery, she had to relearn how to do everything with her left hand, resulting in much annoyance. One day, for the first time in her life, she picked up one of her grandchild’s paintbrushes and just started putting color on the paper.
With the robotic arm, she could complete more tasks that were impossible before. “Every time I recovered something, I would tell the good news to the program members,” Chen said. “They thought it was a wonder that I could do something like painting.”
Chen has completed about 500 paintings to date. During the month of May, which is National Stroke Awareness Month, she was painting one every day and posting a picture of it on her Facebook page, Stroke of Hope, to help raise awareness.

Stroke Awareness Oregon had contacted the family to see if it was possible to include some of her paintings in an auction (拍卖) to raise money for awareness and rapid response programs for stroke patients in the state. “They go to a good cause, which is what Mom wants to achieve with stroke of Hope—really putting the word out there that it’s not over once you have a stroke,” said Liana.
