Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Leading in and revision Activity 1 Leading in and revision 1. Lead in the teaching and learning topic by introducing the learning objectives of this period. 2. Guide the students to recall what they have learned/known about infinitives. Step 2 Discovering useful structures Activity 2 Discovering the structures Read these sentences and fill in the blanks using the correct words from the text on pages 2 and 3. General introduction of the infinitives (动词不定式简介) 动词不定式 (Infinitives) 是重要的非谓语动词形式之一,由“(to) +动词原形”构成。动词不定式有动词特征,可与其逻辑主语、宾语、状语等一起构成不定式短语。动词不定式在句中的位置灵活、句法功能丰富,可充当谓语以外的几乎所有句子成分。除学过的不定式作宾语、宾补、定语、状语等用法外,不定式在句中还可以用作表语。 II Infinitives as the predicative (动词不定式作表语的基本用法) 动词不定式是非谓语动词的一种,可以放在系动词be之后作表语,通常说明或解释主语的内容,所描述的行为或说明该行为带来的结果,也可表示将来的动作。 1. 动词不定式常用在系动词后作表语,一般紧跟在系动词如be、seem、remain、appear、get等后面,用来说明主语的内容。 e.g. To go there at this hour was to risk one’s life. To ask him such questions is to irritate him. The only thing he can do now is (to) give up the plan. All he wanted was to be left alone. The least I can expect is to have this day all to myself. 3. 不定式的主动形式表示被动意义:有些作表语的动词不定式,在结构上是主动的,但在意义上却是被动的,这种情况中,不定式和句中主语构成逻辑上的动宾关系。 e.g. She is to blame. 她应该受到责备。 4. 有时,根据表达的需要,在作表语的不定式前,还可添加疑问代词或疑问副词,包括what, who, how, when, where等。 e.g. The problem was how to begin. My main concern is how to get there on time. III动词不定式与动名词作表语的区别 动词不定式作表语强调的是一次性、具体的、将要发生的动作,动名词作表语强调的是一般性、抽象的、经常发生的动作。 e.g. His job is delivering the letters to their destinations. My job is to look after the sister when Mom is cooking. His job is teaching; that is, he makes a living by teaching. 他的工作是教书,也就是说,他以教书为生。 Step 4 Using the structures Activity 4 Using the structures (exercises in the textbook) 1. Match the sentence halves and underline the nouns or clauses used as the subject in each sentence. Learn about the new words. 1) permanent adj.永久的;永恒的;长久的 2) memorial n.纪念碑(或像等);纪念物;纪念品adj.纪念的;悼念的 3) humble adj.谦逊的;虚心的;卑 4) criticise vi. vt. 批评;指责;评价 5) criticism n.批评;指责 2. Work in pairs. Make conversations using the following questions and sentence patterns. Questions Sentence patterns 1) What’s your biggest dream/ambition in life? 2) How are you going to make your dream come true? 3) How are you going to achieve your goal? 4) Do you have any plans? 5) What might be difficult for you? 6) How are you going to deal with…? My biggest dream/ambition in life is to… I think all I have to do is… My plan is to… I think one of the hardest things might be… I guess the best way to ... is … Sample dialogue: A: What’s your biggest ambition in life? B: My biggest ambition in life is to run an international marathon in Beijing. A: Wow, that sounds great! How are you going to make your dream come true? B: I should practise, practise, practise and never give up! A: How are you going to achieve your goal? Do you have any plans? B: Yes, my plan is to run my first marathon in two years’ time. I think all I have to do is start running shorter races, and then get used to longer and longer races. A: What might be difficult for you? B: I think one of the hardest things might be training my body and mind to endure such a long race. A: How are you going to deal with that? B: I guess the best way to deal with that is to train slowly but with great focus, get a lot of support from friends and family, always be positive, and keep my long-term goal in mind. Step 5 Evaluation and summary Activity 5 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1. How is your mastery of the use of infinitives as the predicative? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 2. What are your problems with the use of infinitives as the predicative?
