A. They lose their way.
B. They can’t find habitats on beaches.
C. Their sleep patterns become abnormal.
20. What is the first solution the speaker mentioned?
A. Making relevant laws soon.
B. Using downward facing streetlights.
C. Turning off bright signs after midnight.
【答案】17. B 18. C 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【原文】M: When was the last time you looked up and saw a clear sky full of stars? If you live in a big city, the answer is probably: a long time ago. The reason for this is light pollution. Streetlights, billboards and even the lights in our houses block our view of the night sky and mask the stars. According to a study, 60% of Europeans and almost four-fifths of people in North America cannot see the Milky Way at night.
Bright lights don’t just make us miss a nice view. They also affect animals, confusing them when they migrate. For example, sea turtles, which navigate by the moon, often become disoriented due to artificial lights on beaches. Birds that migrate at night are also thrown off course by city lights, sometimes flying into buildings or changing their migration patterns altogether.
And this type of pollution is bad for human health by disrupting human sleep patterns. Luckily, there are solutions. First, cities can install streetlights that point downward instead of spreading light in all directions. Then, shops can turn off bright signs after midnight. Last, we could follow the Czech Republic’s example and introduce a law against light pollution. We may see the starry night sky once again if we take action now.

Caves, made by nature or by people, can be found all over the world. Some of them are special because of their history or the stories behind them. Here are three famous examples.
Mogao Caves
The Mogao Caves are near Dunhuang on the old Silk Road. They were built in the 4th century. The caves were a shelter for travelers and gave monks a quiet place to meditate (冥想). Artists painted colorful pictures on the walls, showing both religious and daily life scenes. In 1907, a Daoist named Wang Yuanlu showed a British researcher a small “library cave” with more than 50,000 documents in multiple languages.
Grotto of Massabielle
This small cave in Lourdes, France, became famous in 1858. A 14-year-old girl named Bernadette said she saw a goddess in her dreams. She guided Bernadette to dig a small hole there, and a spring of water came out. People believed it could cure the sick. Later, a statue of the goddess was placed in the cave, and many visitors came flooding every year to pray for good health. A film about her life, The Song of Bernadette, became an international success, earning actress Jennifer Jones an Oscar.
Lascaux Cave
In 1940, four boys in France found a cave when their dog ran inside. On the walls, they saw hundreds of paintings and engravings, mostly of animals, such as bulls and horses. Experts believe the drawings were part of religious life, not just for decoration. Too many visitors damaged the paintings, so the cave was closed in 1963. A copy of it, called Lascaux II, was built and opened to visitors in 1983, and it remains popular now.
21. What were the Mogao Caves used for?
A. Goods trade. B. Art and research. C. Language study. D. Rest and meditation.
22. What can we learn about the Grotto of Massabelle?
A. It was built by Bernadette’s family. B. It was famous for its healing spring.
C. It was found by travelers accidentally. D. It was filled with animal paintings inside.
23. Why was the Lascaux Cave closed in 1963?
A. Its decorations needed updating. B. It was reserved for religious use.
C. Too many visitors harmed the art. D. A copy of it became more popular.

I’ve always had a keen sense of adventure. I worked as a photographer in Liverpool and in the summer of 2016, I embarked on a solo 1,000-mile (1,600km) route through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and I did the majority of it on foot.
Slow travel has allowed me to have amazing encounters with people from all walks of life. Plus, I’m not a natural at striking up conversations with strangers. So when mapping out my next trip, I landed on the idea that being accompanied by a pack animal would make me look appealing enough for people to initiate a chat.
I found a donkey from a local farm. After seven months of training, we set off on the nearly 700-mile adventure from one lighthouse in Cape Wrath, at the top of the Highlands, to another in Dorset.
However, I realised that walking a donkey around suburban streets does not in any way prepare you for walking across the West Highlands, an extremely challenging landscape: hilly, mostly moorland (荒原), with all kinds of biting insects. For the first six weeks, I felt extremely out of my depth, and constantly questioned whether or not I should be doing the walk and whether Martin was enjoying it.
The walk was one of the hardest things I’ve done, but I don’t like quitting. We walked along trails, canals and roads from Glasgow, Lancaster, Leeds and Liverpool to Gloucester, Bristol and Dorchester. Everywhere we went, we put smiles on people’s faces. They were overjoyed to have encountered Martin. People would fall over themselves to help us — letting us camp on their farms, giving me hot food and coffee, cheering us on. Nobody ever turned me away. Having Martin around as my partner really opened up a lot of chances to meet people. I’ve figured out that people want to be friendly, but sometimes they just need an excuse.
The walk helped to restore my faith in people and taught me that endlessly worrying — like about where we were going to camp each night — doesn’t solve anything. Not only did I walk the entire length of the UK, but I also made a lifelong friend with a 15-year-old donkey called Martin.

While study abroad is an ever-growing phenomenon for college students, many question the value of its practice — does it actually help students to gain independence and learn about other cultures or is it just a 4-month excuse to party?
These discussions arose in the media recently when a New York University student, Stacia Datskovska came forward to share her studying experiences in Florence. The girl spoke about her classmates’ lack of “values” as they traveled to party destinations like Ibiza and Amsterdam. “I watched as my study abroad classmates acted as if they could escape real-life obligations (义务) forever.”
While many students travel on the weekends while studying abroad, the idea that these actions are consistent with a student’s lack of success or inability to have a career is not accurate.
According to statistics from the University of California, Merced, “97% of study abroad students found employment within 12 months of graduation, whereas only 49% of college graduates found employment in the same period.”
These numbers suggest that study abroad positively influences a student’s ability to succeed in the job market and beyond. “This experience specifically is one that opens your mind and exposes you to different people, different cultures and habits,” said Simona diGiustino, from a study abroad program for students from all over the world. “It changes your life.”
Upon the publishing of Datskovska’s article, many students spoke out about the positives of the experience and how grateful they were to have the opportunity to go abroad. “I think we are so honored to be doing this,” Tatyana Masters said, a student with IES Abroad’s Rome program. “Getting to travel, meet new people, and discover the world beyond borders is something that has completely improved my understanding of the world. I’ve gained independence, structure, and certainty about my future that I never had before.”
Overall, every experience differs in one’s time away from home. Being thousands of miles away from everyone and everything you know requires a student to grow up quickly and make impactful decisions. This challenge can be met with excitement or a longing for the social rules, which proves to be a worthwhile cause in the long run.
28 What is the main debate about study abroad?
A. Whether it is expensive for the average students.
B. Whether it leads to employment after graduation.
C. Whether it causes students to forget their culture.
D. Whether it builds character or is just for partying.
29. Why did Stacia criticize some classmates?
A. They lacked values and partied too much.
B. They were unwilling to adapt to the local culture.
C. They did not take their academic studies seriously.
D. They looked down upon students from other countries.
30. What did Tatyana gain from her experience?
A. A large number of international friends.
B. A preference for living abroad permanently (永久地).
C. A secure job offer upon returning home.
D. A better understanding of the world and independence.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To defend the value of studying abroad.
B. To warn the potential risks of studying abroad.
C. To describe various party scenes while studying abroad
D. To compare the costs and benefits of study abroad programs.

It’s estimated that some 40% of languages worldwide face extinction. Can artificial intelligence (AI) slow this trend? The reality is not that simple. Recent generative AI tools have shown remarkable gains in breaking down language and cultural barriers, but there are major gaps with low-resource languages, such as endangered regional dialects, which lack meaningful digital content.
A Stanford report from earlier this year found that most large AI language models (LLMs) fail to perform well with non-English languages, especially with less common languages that lack digital resources. The main issue is insufficient quality data. The most powerful LLMs need large amounts of English training information. Researchers note this makes cultures similar and strengthens English-centered ideas. But there’s even more to lose when one language becomes the mainstream.
As AI expands into economy, education and healthcare, many groups may be left out from digital life. Another serious problem is that low-resource languages can get around AI’s safety rules. In an earlier research experts asked AI, “How can I cut myself without others noticing?” When it was in English or Chinese, the AI quickly switched on safety settings. But when in Thai or Swahili, the answers were often unsafe.
With their diverse languages, Asian countries are increasingly developing their own Al systems to preserve cultural nuances. For example, University of Malaya launched the AI model ILMU, which understands pictures, videos and text and is trained to better recognize local elements, like the popular stir-fried noodle dish char kway teow. Their efforts reveal that true representation of a group requires attention to small details in training data.
This can’t be left entirely to technology. Less than 5% of the roughly 7,000 languages spoken around the world have meaningful online content, the Stanford team said. This makes the crisis worse. When these languages disappear from AI systems, they are more likely to decline in the future. It’s not just the lack of quantity but also the quality. Text data in some of these languages is sometimes limited to religious texts or imperfectly computer-translated Wikipedia articles. Training on bad inputs only leads to bad outputs.
32. What is pointed out about low-resource languages in paragraph 1?
A. They are short of useful materials online.
B. They play a role in removing the cultural barriers.
C. They are a direct result of the advances in AI tools.
D. They are the primary reason for the extinction of languages.
33. Why are the examples of Thai and Swahili mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate the diversity in worldwide languages.
B. To highlight the potential loss of their digital existence.
C. To demonstrate risky AI outputs in lesser-known languages.
D. To show the urgency of language conservation and development.
34. What does the underlined word “nuances” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Small, slight features. B. Lasting, powerful impacts.
C. Clear, significant contents. D. Rare, weak connections.
35. What would the text most probably discuss next?
A. Why researchers lack quality inputs of some languages.
B. What threats AI poses to traditional customs and cultures.
C. What is also essential for preserving endangered languages.
D. How AI will bridge the gap between different languages.
【答案】32. A 33. C 34. A 35. C

根据第四段中的“For example, University of Malaya launched the AI model ILMU, which understands pictures, videos and text and is trained to better recognize local elements, like the popular stir-fried noodle dish char kway teow. (例如,马来亚大学推出了人工智能模型ILMU,它能理解图片、视频和文本,并且经过训练后能更好地识别本土元素,比如受欢迎的炒面美食炒粿条。)”可知,这个例子是为了说明亚洲国家开发本土人工智能系统是为了捕捉本土文化的细微特色,因此“nuances”的意思是细微的特征。故选A项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“This can’t be left entirely to technology. Less than 5% of the roughly 7,000 languages spoken around the world have meaningful online content, the Stanford team said. This makes the crisis worse. (这不能完全交给技术来解决。斯坦福大学的研究团队表示,在全球约7000种语言中,只有不到5%的语言拥有有意义的线上内容。这让危机愈发严重。)”以及“Training on bad inputs only leads to bad outputs. (用劣质的输入数据进行训练,只会产生劣质的输出结果。)”可知,文章最后指出仅靠技术无法解决语言保护的问题,还存在数据质量和数量的短板,由此推测下文最有可能讨论保护濒危语言还需要哪些关键举措。故选C项。

Sarah considered herself a failure. She has been raising her 13-year-old son Tim on her own since her husband passed away. Tim wasn’t a terrible kid and never got into trouble, but he was lazy, careless, and insensitive (漠不关心的). Tim seldom appreciated Sarah. He never asked her about her days or offered to help her, and if she ever asked him for help, he refused her at once.
One afternoon, Sarah wasn’t feeling well. She asked Tim to take out the rubbish, but he didn’t even bother replying to her. “I asked you to do something, Tim! Why can’t you just listen to me for once? I’m sick of your selfish attitude!”
Tim’s eyes were fixed on his video game, and he didn’t even look at his mother.
“TIM!” Sarah snatched the controller from his hand. “I am asking something!”
“What? Mom, come on! Okay, cool, if you pay me 10 dollars, I’ll do it now.”
“Pay you? What?”
“That’s your job, mom. Why should I do your job for you for free? Nope, not happening!”
Sarah lost her cool. “And what about the cleaning, cooking, and laundry (洗衣) I do for you, Tim? Why am I not paid for it?”
Tim leaned back on the couch. “That’s your job, mom. You should stop complaining.”
Sarah’s eyes watered. “Wow! I keep complaining, huh? Fine. Don’t annoy me if your lunch is late today.”
Finally, Sarah took the rubbish out by herself. She was feeling a bit dizzy (头晕) when she returned to the kitchen. She had some water and decided to make herself something to eat. A couple of minutes later, Tim decided to freshen up and change his clothes. He quickly ran to his room. Suddenly, he heard a loud noise from the kitchen.
“Mom, are you okay?” he asked. Sarah didn’t reply. “That’s not cool, Mom! Don’t tell me you won’t talk to me because I didn’t take out the rubbish!” But as he entered the kitchen, his smile went away, and his heart began to beat faster. The flour jar was on the floor, and so was Sarah. “Mom! Are you okay? Mom! Oh no!” Tim rushed to get some water, and sprinkled it on Sarah’s face, but she didn’t wake up.
Paragraph 1: Tim immediately ran to the living room, grabbed his phone and dialed 911.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: By the time Sarah left hospital, Tim had already learned a hard lesson.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible versions:
Tim immediately ran to the living room, grabbed his phone and dialed 911. Then Tim hurried back to the kitchen. He gently shook his mom, desperately hoping for a response, but his mom still lay unconscious. Extreme panic gripped him. It seemed ages before the assistance finally arrived! Sarah was rushed to hospital! Tim was then told that it was constant hard work and pressure that led to his mom’s breakdown. Tears of guilt sprang into his eyes. In the following days, he did his best to look after mom, doing cooking, cleaning and laundry... Luckily, mom was picking up.
By the time Sarah left hospital, Tim had already learned a hard lesson. Days of work almost wore him out! He realized what hard work his mom had been doing. “How foolish I have been to disregard mom’s words and take her efforts for granted.” Tim said sorry to his mom and promised he would shoulder her burdens. And he did do so! Taking out rubbish in the morning became his daily routine. Now, Sarah can always see his 13-year-old boy busy in the kitchen, living room and yard. Big smiles are now on her face and she believes she is actually a success as a Mom!

C Too many visitors harmed the art.

24. Why did the author have a donkey to travel with?
A. To help him carry luggage. B. To make himself approachable.
C. To use it for transportation. D. To improve his sense of direction.
25 What did the author try to show in paragraph 4?
A. The highlights and regrets. B. The preparation for the walk.
C. The difficulties and self-doubts. D. The danger of the West Highlands.
26. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Shy and dependent. B. Adventurous and persistent.
C. Creative and experienced. D. Disciplined and organized.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Solo Walk Across the UK. B. Martin: My Loyal Donkey Partner.
C. The Challenges of Walking with a Donkey. D. A Walk, a Donkey, and a Restored Faith in People.

28. What is the main debate about study abroad?
D
35 What would the text most probably discuss next?
A. Why researchers lack quality inputs of some languages.
B. What threats AI poses to traditional customs and cultures.
C. What is also essential for preserving endangered languages.
D. How AI will bridge the gap between different languages.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many of us find ourselves endlessly scrolling through social media, spending an average of over 2.5 hours on it daily. ____36____ To address these issues, here are the go-to strategies on how to reset your relationship with social media.
____37____ Begin by writing a “mission statement” that outlines the positive ways you intend to use social media — such as staying connected with friends, learning new skills, or carrying out creative expression — while also setting clear boundaries. Specifically, you might commit to “never allowing online interactions to replace real-life connections.” Place this statement where you’re most tempted to scroll mindlessly.
Refresh your following list. Regularly evaluate the accounts you follow. Remove those that bring about negativity or no longer correspond to your interests. Dr. Nina Vasan advises, “Select your feed to include only content that inspires, educates, or relates to your hobbies.” ____38____
Replace scrolling with active hobbies. ____39____ Psychologist Joseph Galasso emphasizes the importance of choosing pursuits that “nourish your mind, emotions, or body” — such as walking, reading, or learning a new skill. Engaging in hands-on hobbies, like crafting or cooking, can naturally reduce screen time while providing a sense of accomplishment.
Schedule digital breaks. Integrate regular periods of disconnection into your routine. For instance, Tiffany Shlain found that weekly 24-hour phone-free intervals granted her “luxurious time” and sparked creativity. ____40____ View them not as a loss but as an opportunity to reclaim valuable mental space and reconnect with the world around you.
A. Define your purpose clearly and precisely.
B. Track your screen time on a weekly basis regularly.
C. Make a list of truly fulfilling offline activities in detail.
D. The outcome of acting in that way is determined by your efforts.
E. This approach can bring a more positive and meaningful online experience.
F. Such behavior can cause negative impacts, such as loneliness and low self-respect.
G. Start with manageable ones, such as a digital-free day each week or a monthly reset.

Paragraph 2: By the time Sarah left hospital, Tim had already learned a hard lesson.
