(2025·江西南昌二模)Annie Smith,32,went into labor as floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey surrounded her apartment. With the roads underwater, the two-mile drive to the hospital was impossible.Annie and her husband,Greg, both doctors, began preparing for a home birth.
Greg rushed to gather supplies—scissors, sewing needles—while his mother boiled water to sterilize (消毒) them.“I'm really starting to get scared now,” Annie told Greg as the reality set in.A neighbor, checking on the Smiths, sent an email to their apartment complex's message board asking for help.Within 30 minutes,at least 15 people showed up,including medical trainees from the complex.
Meanwhile, the couple had been continuously dialing 911 but never got an answer. Finally,a call to the director of Annie's fellowship program led to action. The director's father, who lived near a fire station, walked there to explain the situation.
Around noon,a rescue truck arrived.By then, the water had reached a formidable level that the vehicle couldn't get close. The Smiths' neighbors and firefighters formed a human chain to help Annie Smith to the back of the flatbed truck.“I held onto them one person at a time,” she said, moving on her hands and knees along their arms until she reached the ladder safely. She sat on a blanket in the truck,a shower curtain over her head,as they drove through the flood.
The Smiths arrived at Texas Children's Hospital about 15 minutes later. An hour later, their daughter Adrielle was born, weighing 7 pounds,6 ounces. The couple, exhausted but relieved, appreciated the neighbors and firemen who had come to their aid.“It was absolutely incredible how many people responded and were out in the rain trying to help us,” Annie said.

(2025·江西赣州一模)Thanks to smartphones, all the entertainment and distraction they offer can be accessible anytime at your fingertips. But if one of your resolutions for 2025 is to disconnect more frequently from your digital device, encountering boredom may be an unexpected consequence.
1 So,what can you do to alleviate boredom?James Danckert,a psychology professor at the University of Waterloo, noted “We don't really have any good data on interventions for boredom.” Instead,he offered three admittedly unscientific suggestions to manage it.
Create a list for yourself
Make a list of activities that you can turn to when you're bored.“ 2 ” Danckert said.“But then you should have a second or third or fourth,so that when that primary thing that usually works doesn't work, you can turn to these other things on your list.”
Stop scrolling mindlessly
Despite technology bringing the world to our fingertips, society is experiencing higher levels of boredom. 3 In fact, they can make it worse. If you're just sort of mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds,it's going to make your boredom worse in the long run.
4
Boredom has a message for you,so pay attention.“I don't think we should embrace boredom, but I also don't think we should try to escape from it,” Danckert said.“ 5 So we should just learn to listen to it and figure out what it tells us in that moment. We need to adapt it and respond to it in good ways.”
A.Don't try to hide from boredom.
B.Boredom is neither good nor bad.
C.Boredom can be as disturbing as pain.
D.Do something to get out of that bored state.

(2025·河南豫东、豫北联考)Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years,it has imported rubbish from other countries so that its recycling plants can function smoothly.Less than 1 percent of Swedish household waste was sent to landfills (垃圾填埋场) last year or any year since 2011.
We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK,which is why we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfills under The Landfill Tax of 1996.
Why are we sending waste to Sweden? Their system is so far ahead because of a culture of looking after the environment.Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels in 1991 and now sources almost half its electricity from renewables.
“In Sweden, people are quite crazy about being out in nature and they have a clear idea of what needs to be done on nature and environmental problems. We worked on communications for a long time to make people not throw things outdoors so that we can recycle and reuse,” says Anria-Carin Gripwall, director of communications for Avfall Sverige, the Swedish Waste Management's recycling association.
Over time,Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the freezing Swedish winter.“That's a key reason that we have this district network,so we can use the heating from the waste plants. In the southern part of Europe they don't use the heating from the waste; it just goes out of the chimney. Here we use it as a substitute for fossil fuel,” Ms Gripwall says.
1.Why has Sweden been importing rubbish from abroad in the past few years?
A.To try out its recycling system.

根据第一段中“Sweden is so good at recycling ...can function smoothly.”
2.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “sources” in paragraph 3?
A.Consumes. B.Saves.
C.Obtains. D.Improves.
根据画线词上文“Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels in 1991”以及后文“almost half its electricity from renewables”可知,瑞典是1991年第一批开始对化石燃料征收重税的国家之一,如今该国近一半的电力供应来自可再生能源,故source意为“获得”,与obtain同义。故选C。]
3.How does Sweden handle the heating from the waste plants?
A.By making use of it to heat homes.
B.By exchanging it for fossil fuel.
C.By selling it to other countries.
D.By sending it out from the chimney.
根据最后一段中“Over time,Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the freezing Swedish winter.” 故选A。]
4.What conclusion can be drawn from the text?
A.People in Sweden will be fined if they don't have their waste recycled.
B.Swedish rarely get close to nature to avoid harming it.
C.Waste is imported and burnt mainly by the government in Sweden.
D.Swedish have a strong environmental awareness.
根据第四段中“In Sweden, people are quite crazy about being out in nature and they have a clear idea of what needs to be done on nature and environmental problems.(在瑞典,人们非常热衷于亲近大自然,并且对于自然及环境问题的解决办法有着明确的认识)”可推知,瑞典人的环境保护意识很强。故选D。]

(2025·山东济宁三模)When you log into social media, does an algorithm (算法) govern your feed? When shopping online,do you often focus on top-listed,AI-suggested items? If you answer “Yes”,most of the time, you go along with what the algorithm recommends. 1 As the name suggests, the term refers to our growing tendency to outsource decisions to systems designed to predict and control our behavior.
Now,there's nothing fundamentally wrong with accepting algorithmic suggestions. 2 But like water slowly carving stone, repeated reliance on AI recommendations can weaken our capacity for independent judgement and even our sense of self.Over time, such reliance not only affects the quality of our choices but also undermines our ability to trust our own judgements.
3 It is the capacity to make intentional choices and take purposeful action.Exercising it requires that we actively shape ourselves through thoughtful choices, rather than being passively shaped by algorithms, social norms,or external pressures.
To achieve this, practicing intentional pauses proves workable. That is,before accepting a recommendation, pause and ask,“Would I have made this choice on my own?” 4 For example, when you're on YouTube, autoplay goes to another video.Instead of watching mindlessly, you pause and realize you're not truly interested. You close the app and go for a walk instead, following your inner voice over automation.
To be human is to choose. It is to exercise the human capacity for intentional action, the ability we have been given to be the authors of our own lives. As AI becomes more integrated in our lives,we must actively preserve our decision-making capacities. 5
A.That is how we remain human.
B.So,it's time to reclaim human agency.
C.In many cases, they save us considerable time.
D.The aim of this question is to stay open to algorithm.
E.This short reflection brings awareness to your decisions.
F.Psychologists term this common practice “algorithmic dependence”.
G.An algorithm is a set of defined rules you follow to get a specific result.
1.F [根据上文“When you log into social media, does an algorithm govern your feed? When shopping online,do you often focus on top-listed,AI-suggested items? If you answer ‘Yes’,most of the time, you go along with what the algorithm recommends.”可知,此处描述人们普遍跟随算法推荐的行为,结合下文“As the name suggests, the term refers to our growing tendency to outsource decisions to systems designed to predict and control our behavior.”
2.C [根据上文“Now,there's nothing fundamentally wrong with accepting algorithmic suggestions.”
3.B [根据下文“It is the capacity to make intentional choices and take purposeful action.” B选项中的human agency直接对应下文“the capacity to make intentional choices”,而reclaim呼应上文“依赖算法削弱自主能力”的问题,引出对自主决策的呼吁,统领段落主旨。故选B项。]
4.E [根据上文“That is,before accepting a recommendation,pause and ask,‘Would I have made this choice on my own?’”
5.A [根据上文“As AI becomes more integrated in our lives,we must actively preserve our decision-making capacities.” 故选A项。]

(2025·广东广州二模)New research reveals that “intensive domain-specific training” like mathematics fundamentally reshapes brain activity during complex problem solving, offering insights into the cognitive neuroscience (认知神经科学) of concentration.A study published in Cognitive Neuroscience compared graduate students in math-related fields with peers in non-mathematical fields to investigate how long-term specialized practice influences thinking processes.
Participants watched video demonstrations of multi-step mathematical problems while wearing brain-wave-monitoring caps to track brain activity. The study found clear differences:non-math students' front brain areas (linked to memory and focus) worked harder as they struggled to follow logical steps. In contrast,math-intensive students displayed synchronized (同步的) slow brain waves connecting the frontal and upper-back brain areas, which are responsible for abstract reasoning and spatial processing. These slow brain rhythms, typically observed during deep sleep, appeared to facilitate efficient communication between distant neural networks during intense focus.
These findings indicate that repeated exposure to complex problem solving allows math-trained students to automate basic logical steps (e.g.formula application),which saves mental energy for complex analysis. This “neural efficiency”—the brain's adaptability through training—mirrors patterns in other experts:experienced musicians' brains show similar slow waves when composing and athletes enter similar “flow states” during competitions. Most importantly, researchers confirm such neural efficiency isn't inborn but develops through deliberate practice.Students with equal IQs but less math training lacked these distinctive wave patterns. However, those who engaged in repetition and intentional study eventually developed such patterns, becoming more efficient in solving problems.
By the same logic, these findings hint at a trade-off that people should keep in mind particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) and other tools offer tempting shortcuts for various forms of problem solving.Dr.Elena Torres, lead researcher of the study, further warns that over-reliance on AI might weaken our brain's natural problem-solving abilities.“Each time we off-load a problem to a calculator or ask AI to summarize an essay,we are losing an opportunity to improve our own skills and practise deep concentration for ourselves.” Torres urges “a strategic balance—use AI for repetitive labor, thanks to its fast data processing and continuous operation, but reserve complex challenges for deep,tech-free focus.”
1.What was the main purpose of the new research?
A.To study how specialized training affects brains.
B.To investigate how AI tools influence learning.
C.To compare brain activity among math experts.
D.To measure IQ levels across different specialists.
根据文章第一段中的“A study published in Cognitive Neuroscience compared graduate students in math-related fields with peers in non-mathematical fields to investigate how long-term specialized practice influences thinking processes.” 故选A。]
2.How did non-math students' brains differ from those of math students in complex problem solving?
A.Their front-top parts worked together.
B.They showed random sleep-like waves.
C.Their front area worked with extra effort.
D.They processed information automatically.
根据文章第二段中的“The study found clear differences:non-math students' front brain areas (linked to memory and focus) worked harder as they struggled to follow logical steps. In contrast,math-intensive students displayed synchronized slow brain waves connecting the frontal and upper-back brain areas, which are responsible for abstract reasoning and spatial processing.”
3.What is crucial to developing “neural efficiency” according to the text?
A.Long-term focused practice.
B.Inborn abstract reasoning talent.
C.Random exposure to complex problems.
D.Training on memorizing basic logical steps.
根据文章第三段中的“Most importantly, researchers confirm such neural efficiency isn't inborn but develops through deliberate practice...becoming more efficient in solving problems.”
4.What do Dr.Elena Torres' quotes highlight in the last paragraph?
A.AI tools limit independent learning opportunities.
B.Technology improves efficiency in complex tasks.
C.Overusing shortcuts harms cognitive development.
D.AI tools reduce motivation for deep concentration.
根据文章最后一段中的“Dr.Elena Torres, lead researcher of the study, further warns that over-reliance on AI might weaken our brain's natural problem-solving abilities...we are losing an opportunity to improve our own skills and practise deep concentration for ourselves.”

(2025·江苏南京模拟)I first became interested in the Rubik's Cube (魔方) when I was 13 because I wanted to use it in my magic trick routine.I soon realized that if I really made an effort,I could solve the cube.I started watching videos that explained the algorithms (算法).I watched them every day and I became fascinated. 1 In 2019,Rubik's Cube hired me as a brand ambassador (大使),and I began making video content for them.Every job I've ever had has been in some way related to the skills I've acquired through cubing. 2 It has also shown me that success is often the result of messing up.
As well as working as a brand ambassador,I participate in Guinness World Records attempts to get recognition for the cube. For the Guinness World Record at the London Marathon in 2024,Rubik's sent me 600 cubes, which my friends scrambled (打乱).The cubes were then put into bags.During the race,I had two bags on my front:one for the scrambled cubes and the other for the solved cubes. 3 I had people waiting at checkpoints every two miles to exchange bags with me and give me 50 scrambled cubes in return for the 50 I had solved. This meant I was carrying ten kilos of cubes with me for the entire race. 4 In this way, everything was documented and then confirmed by Guinness World Records to make it official.
5 We're not competing against each other, but against ourselves. In 2024,I beat my quickest solving time of 3.31 seconds, reducing it to 3.25 seconds. It was a great feeling!I believe anyone can solve the cube—it's just a question of hard work and putting in the time.
A.It has taught me hard work and problem-solving.
B.I managed to solve 520 cubes while I was running.
C.About a year later,I won my first UK champion title.
D.I also had a camera on my head to film myself solving.

1.C [上文“I first became interested in the Rubik's Cube when I was 13 because I wanted to use it in my magic trick routine.I soon realized that if I really made an effort,I could solve the cube.I started watching videos that explained the algorithms.I watched them every day and I became fascinated.” 所以C项中“About a year later”衔接时间线,“won my first UK champion title”为后续被品牌雇佣的铺垫。]
2.A [上文“Every job I've ever had has been in some way related to the skills I've acquired through cubing.” 下文“It has also shown me that success is often the result of messing up.” 所以A项中“taught me hard work and problem-solving”对应上文中的 “skills”,且与下文“also shown me”结构一致。]
3.B [上文“During the race,I had two bags on my front:one for the scrambled cubes and the other for the solved cubes.”
4.D [上文“This meant I was carrying ten kilos of cubes with me for the entire race.” 下文“In this way, everything was documented and then confirmed by Guinness World Records to make it official.”
5.F [下文“We're not competing against each other,but against ourselves.” 所以F项符合语境,“inclusive community”直接呼应下文“not competing against each other”,引出对社区氛围的阐述。故选F。]
