UNIT 1 SCIENCE FICTION Reading for Writing lead-in Do you know the TIME MACHINE and do you desrie to own one? Learning objective 1.Figure out the structure and main idea of the passage; 2.Write a sci-fi short story with bold but reasonable imagination. Herbert George Wells(1866--1946): English Writter, the first one to write science fictions about time travelling. His famous science fictions includes The War of the Worlds (《星际战争》) The Time Machine(1895), the first science fiction about time travelling, tells the story about a time traveller who can travell around time because of the the time machine (he travels to the year 802701). I gave it a last check, and sat myself in the leather seat. I pushed the starting lever on the main panel forwards an inch then immediately backwards again. Looking around, I saw my laboratory exactly as before. Had anything happened? I thought my mind had tricked me. Then I saw the clock. A moment before, it was a minute or so past ten; now it was nearly half past three! The first time he pushed and pulled the lever he saw: 1.the laboratory 2.the time exactly as before half past three(from ten o'clock ) 1. Useful expressions of Para.1 give it a last/final check sit/seat myself in the leather seat or so My mind had tricked me It is/was被强调部分that/who句子其他成分 look around Para. 2 I drew a breath, gripped the lever and pushed it forwards. The laboratory went hazy around me. My niece came in to fetch something, maybe her handkerchief, apparently without seeing me. It probably took her a minute, but to me she moved like a rocket! I pushed the lever further. Night came as if a lamp was being turned out, and in another moment came the day. Tomorrow night came, then skipped to day, again and again, faster and faster still. The second time he pushed the lever he saw: 1.the lab 2.his niece The third time he pushed lever he saw: went hazy moved like a rocket Time skipped again and again, faster and faster. 1. 6. Para. 3 It is hard to explain the strange and unpleasant feeling of time travelling. It felt like I was being driven fast on a winding road. As my pace grew faster, the walls of the laboratory fell away, and I was left in the open air. The sun and moon looked as if they were being thrown across the sky, but soon there was division between night and day. Around me I saw trees growing like puffs of smoke; they grew, spread, and died in moments. I saw huge buildings rise up then disappear like in a dream. The whole surface of the earth was being changed, melting and flowing before my eyes. I calculated that I was being pushed through time at hundreds of years a minute. 似乎/好像 division between night and day puffs of smoke in the open air on a winding road fall away Useful expressions of Para.3 in moments rise up as if/as though Para. 4 I had a strange urge to look at the random things that were being flashed before my eyes! I had thought about the risk of stopping the Time Machine many times. So long as I travelled at maximum speed, it didn’t matter. But if I stopped and the same space was being occupied by something else, we would be forced together and explode like a bomb! Like an impatient fool, I pulled the lever backwards hard. With a sudden jolt, the Time Machine was flipped on its side, and I was thrown through the air. The fourth time he pulled the lever he saw: 1.the machin 2.he himself was flipped on its side was thrown through the air. 1. 只要 with a sudden joilt have a strong urge to look travel at maximum speed explode like a bomb flip on one’s side be stunned for a moment Useful expressions of Para.4 the risk of doing... as long as/so loge as Para. 5 I was stunned for a moment, and then heard the sound of thunder. I was sitting in the rain in some mud next to the machine. “A fine welcome,” I said. “for a man who has travelled thousands of years to be here!” 昏迷了一会儿 be stunned for a moment next to thousands of years 紧挨着在旁边 数千年 the frist he pulled at 10:00 am 1.the laboratory 2.the time as before half past three the second he pulled 1.the lab 2.his niece went hazy moved like a rocket the third he pulled Time skipped again and again, faster and faster. the fourth he pulled 1.the machin 2.he was flipped on its side was thrown through the air What might happen next in the story? Para.2 When I get to the right time in the right place, I _____________________. Para.3 It feels as if _________________________________________________. 24 Writing Here is my time machine which looks like a drone. With all the shining lights indicating the time I will travel into, my machine can do an awesome job to get me to any place at any time. For me, I want to go back to tell me then that I want to choose more wisely in college, so that I can do better now. When I get to the right time in the right place, I am so obsessed with all the surroundings I was familiar. My teachers, my family and my friends are just like before, which brings me a sense of warmth. Surely I want to stay here forever, enjoying all the vigorous and energetic life as before. It feels as if I never left. I fit quickly into the life here like a fish never rid itself from water. All of this is too real for me; however, I am also aware of my purpose here, which is to find me then and leave me a message to help me choose a better major in college. After I do that, I have to go back to the future. My time machine looks like a crystal ball with two buttons. One can lead to the prehistoric period and the other one can lead to the future. One day, after I pressed the button to the future, the time machine gave out colourful rays, and carried me into the time tunnel. Overwhelmed with excitement and nervousness, I closed my eyes tightly and held my hands firmly. I wondered what the future city would look like?   26 When I opened my eyes, I arrived in a brandnew floating city, located on a manmade island, which was almost entirely covered in the vegetation. In the city, many strange carriage—like small planes were floating above the ground. When I drove one to visit the city, I felt I went through a beautiful garden. There was a huge tower in the city centre acting both as work place and housing for its citizens. The city used solar, wind and wave power to keep it functioning and used its large gardens to supply food. In this city where robots were easy to see everywhere, people were working busily at a rapid pace and AI, of course, became helpful assistants. After hanging around the city for several hours, the time machine transported me back to reality. It sounds a little fancy but in my opinion, with high technology developing, our society will become more and more intelligent.   27 a last check sat myself in Drawing a breath gripped went hazy mind had tricked me puffs of smoke at maximum speed fell away in the open air spinning had an urge exploded like a bomb a sudden jolt flipped stunned What a fine welcome Todays science fiction is tomorrows science fact. Thank You 1.What date do you think it is when the Time Traveller finally stops ? 2.What do you think is different about that time from the time he left ? 3.Who or what do you think the Time Traveller will meet ? 4.What adventures do you think he will have in the future ? 5.Do you think he will ever return to his own time ? Use the following questions to help you continue the story. writing One possible sample of Continued plot The Time Machine hummed as it shot forward, years melting into a golden blur. When it stopped, I stepped out into a world of soft light—trees grew in spirals(螺旋状), their leaves glowing like emeralds(翡翠). The air smelled of honey and ozone(臭氧). Ahead, a river of silver flowed not downward, but upward, twisting into the sky. “Hello?” I called, voice echoing(回荡) through the silent valley. A figure emerged from the mist—a girl, no older than ten, with skin like pale moonlight and hair that shimmered(闪烁) like starlight. She wore a gown(长袍) of woven light, and in her hand, a crystal sphere(水晶球) that pulsed(跳动) gently. “Traveler,” she said, her voice like wind chimes(风铃). “You are far from your time.”I froze. “How do you know I’m from the past?” Lavf58.29.100 Bilibili VXCode Swarm Transcoder v0.6.37 Lavf58.20.100 $
