“We can’t fly over it,” the Scarecrow says. “And we can’t jump over it. So we must stay here.”

Have you ever broken something and then tried to fix it? If you have, you know how a jigsaw puzzle works. A jigsaw puzzle has many small pieces. When you fit the pieces together in the right way, you make a complete picture.
In 1760, a mapmaker named John Spilsbury came up with an idea. He pasted (粘贴) a map onto wood. Then, he cut the wood along the borders of each country. The map turned into many pieces. Spilsbury gave these puzzle pieces to the children. They had to put the map back together. While doing this, they learned which countries were next to each other. Spilsbury wanted to help children learn geography, and his idea worked well.
Many people liked Spilsbury’s puzzles, so others started to make them too. They wanted to find faster ways to cut the pieces. A new tool called a jigsaw helped them do this. This saw made it easier to cut the shapes. After that, people started to call these puzzles jigsaw puzzles. At first, making puzzles took a long time because people had to paste pictures on wood. But in the late 1800s, new dyes (染料) and less money needed for printing made it possible to produce the jigsaw puzzles much more quickly. As a result, more people started to buy them.
Puzzles became more popular as they changed and grew. The pictures were not just maps—they showed famous places, fairy tales, and more. Puzzles were cheap, and people could reuse them many times or trade them with friends. This made puzzles fun for everyone!
Puzzle makers then made something new: 3D puzzles. Instead of flat pictures, these puzzles let people build models (模型) that stood up, like houses. This added even more excitement.
Puzzles are great for learning. They teach children about shapes, colours, and how to pay attention to a task. Completing puzzles also helps creative thinking and improves skills like reading maps. Even better, puzzles can make your memory stronger!
Today, puzzles come in all sizes—some have just 10 pieces for kids, while others have 1,000 for adults. Puzzles can be quick and easy or more difficult and take longer to complete. The best part is putting that last piece in place! With patience, anyone can finish a puzzle. That’s why people of all ages love them!
27.Why did John Spilsbury make the first puzzle?
A.To teach kids to learn different shapes.
B.To help kids know how countries connect.
C.To give kids a fun activity to do with their parents.
D.To let kids see famous places in different countries.
28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Cheaper production made puzzles more popular.
B.People stopped using wooden puzzles after 1800.
C.3D puzzles are the most popular jigsaw puzzles now.
D.Children like playing jigsaw puzzles more than adults.
29.Which of the following would be the best title (标题) for the passage?
A.Jigsaw Puzzles: Where Your Mind Meets Creativity
B.Jigsaw Puzzles: What Makes Them a Learning Tool
C.Jigsaw Puzzles: Why They Became a Popular Activity
D.Jigsaw Puzzles: How They Pieced Their Way Into Our Lives
D
Is it hard for you to ask questions in public? Are you a little shy when it comes to raising your hand in class? With all attention on you, you can be too afraid to speak up.
However, if you can break through your fear, we promise you can benefit (受益) a lot. Some students are falling behind because they’re too shy to put their hands up when a teacher asks a question. So try to raise your hand!
To start with, you’ll realize the power of being wrong. Nobody is right all the time. Your teacher will be happy to see your participation (参与) and won’t punish (惩罚) you for being wrong. He or she will tell you why you’re wrong. You’ll learn something new. Chances are, other students think the same thing as you, but don’t speak up. Not only do you help yourself, but you help your shy classmates, too.
Besides, your teacher will know you’re interested in learning. Participating in class shows that you are not falling asleep behind your textbook. This is beneficial to you and your teacher. Your teacher will enjoy your interaction during the lesson and will remember your active (积极的) participation.
What’s more, you’ll have fun talking with your classmates. When you and other classmates are raising hands to answer questions, it makes the class more interesting and allows you to actively engage with the lesson. Class time will fly by and your mind won’t be watching the clock every 5 minutes.
Most importantly, you’ll know that you’ve actually learned the material. One of the best ways to prove that you actually know something is by talking about it. Speaking up in class shows that you are trying to understand or have understood what you’ve been taught.
Don’t be shy or afraid to raise your hand in class. Nobody is judging (评判) you seriously. It’ll finally pay off.
30.The underlined phrase “engage with” in Paragraph 5 means “________”.
A.Worry about B.Take care of C.Think about D.Take part in
31.How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By raising questions B.By listing numbers
C.By telling a story D.By showing facts
32.The writer probably thinks that ________.
A.being active in class is helpful to your study
B.teachers should help students learn more in class
C.students like talking with each other better than answering questions
D.speaking up in class means understanding the material very well
33.Why does the writer write this passage?
A.To encourage (鼓励) students to speak up in class.
B.To question about the material learned in class.
C.To talk about reasons why students are shy in class.
D.To tell us the ways to help students raise hands in class.

四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
We often say, “Life is movement.” or “Life needs sports.” Doing exercise is really good for us. It can keep us healthy and help us sleep well at night. However, many parents and teachers find it difficult for school students to exercise. A middle school in Taiyuan wants to know how often eighth-grade students do exercise. So the school asks 500 of them. Here are the results.
Chart Ⅰ
Students know it is important to do exercise, but why do half of them hardly ever get a move? Because they have long school hours and much homework. Every school has PE classes, but it is far from enough. Maybe it is a good idea to learn from many schools in the UK. They ask their students to run for 15 minutes every day.
The Daily Mile
The average mileage (平均英里里程) of a 15-minute run for primary school and middle school students is about a mile, so it is called the Daily Mile.
It first started in February, 2012.
Chart Ⅱ
The Daily Mile asks teachers to take students out to run for 15 minutes every day to record (记录) it. By September, 2024, 68% of schools in South London have used the Mile and it really worked. The teachers say the students are happier and less tired during the day. To their surprise and joy, the children enjoy doing the run, even when it is rainy or windy.
The parents are also happy about their kids’ change. They say the daily run helps the children sleep better at night. More importantly, they become healthier, and fewer children in the school are too fat.
Now some schools in other countries also use the Daily Mile for their students.
34.According to Chart Ⅰ, how many students exercise once a week?
35.How long should the students run each day according to the Daily Mile?
36.Why do half of students hardly ever do sport?
37.What do you think of doing sport? Why?

Why?

【答案】27.B 28.A 29.D
【导语】本文讲述了拼图的发展历程及其受欢迎的原因。
27.细节理解题。根据“They had to put the map back together. While doing this, they learned which countries were next to each other. Spilsbury wanted to help children learn geography, and his idea worked well.”可知John Spilsbury制作第一个拼图是为了帮助孩子们了解各国是如何相连的,也就是了解地理知识。故选B。

【答案】30.D 31.A 32.A 33.A
【导语】本文主要讨论了在课堂上积极举手发言的重要性。
30.词句猜测题。根据第五段原文“ it makes the class more interesting and allows you to actively engage with the lesson”可知,“engage with”指“积极参与课堂活动”,与“Take part in”(参与)意思一致。故选D。
31.推理判断题。文章开头通过提问引入主题:“Is it hard for you to ask questions in public? Are you a little shy…?”属于“提出问题”的开篇方式。故选A。
32.推理判断题。全文围绕“课堂积极参与对学习的益处”展开,如第三段提到“You’ll learn something new”(你会学到新知识),第五段提到“Class time will fly by”(课堂时间会过得很快),均支持这一观点。故选A。
33.推理判断题。文章结尾明确呼吁“Don’t be shy or afraid to raise your hand… It’ll finally pay off”,直接体现鼓励意图。故选A。

Why?
【答案】34.150. 35.For 15 minutes. 36.Because they have long school hours and much homework. 37.略
【导语】本文主要介绍了太原的一所中学八年级学生多久做一次运动的情况,并讨论了The Daily Mile这一运动计划对学生的好处。
34.根据“So the school asks 500 of them. Here are the results.”和观察表格一可知,一周锻炼一次有30%,也就是150人。故填150.
35.根据表格二“The average mileage (平均英里里程) of a 15-minute run for primary school and middle school students is about a mile, so it is called the Daily Mile.”可知,根据“每日一英里”,学生每天应该跑15分钟。故填For 15 minutes.
36.根据“Students know it is important to do exercise, but why do half of them hardly ever get a move? Because they have long school hours and much homework.”可知,是因为他们上课时间长,作业多。故填Because they have long school hours and much homework.
37.开放性作答,结合实际,言之有理即可。
