Text 10
When you send a letter or a postcard, you have to put stamps on the envelope or on the card. When did people first begin to use stamps?Who was the first to think of this idea?In the early 19th century, people did not use stamps. They had to pay postage when they received letters. They were unhappy about this, especially when they paid for a letter which they did not wish to receive at all.The postage rate was high at that time, because the post offices had to send many people to collect the postage.Rowland Hill,a schoolmaster in England, thought it would be much easier for people to use stamps. They could go to the nearby post office to buy stamps and put them on envelopes before they sent the letters. The post office could simply put seals on the stamps so that people could not use the stamps again. In this way,the post office did not need to send postmen to collect postage. It only needed to send fewer postmen to deliver letters. This was a good idea and the government finally accepted it.On May 6th,1840,the post offices throughout England began to sell stamps - “One Penny” black stamps and “Two Pence” blue stamps.

Shirley Raines was presented with the 2021 CNN Hero of the Year, as she offered hope to the homeless people living on skid row (贫民区) in Los Angeles. Then what inspired her to do so?
In 1990, Raines' 2-year-old son died from accidental poisoning. This event caused her a lot of pain, and the pain lasted for many years. Raines didn't know what to do about it. And she couldn't figure out what she was living for. Until one day about several years ago, Raines visited the skid row with a friend who worked as a volunteer. She met a lot of homeless people there and realized that they badly needed help, not just in finding a home, but in finding themselves, including their own worth and beauty.
Then, Raines forgot the pain that fate had given her. She devoted herself to helping the homeless. Raines started to do voluntary work every Saturday. As she got to know the homeless, they often praised her for her make-up, hair, and style. She then started to make the homeless up. They loved it, and she loved it. Thus, Raines found the purpose of her life. She started an outdoor beauty salon (美容院) to serve the homeless.
Raines also started sharing photos on Instagram, and even live-streaming some of her events so that more people would join her. Things took off, and Raines formed Beauty 2 the Streetz, a non-profit group that provides free food, clothing, and make-up services for the homeless. Her fans quickly began donating to increase her impact. So far, the number of her fans has grown to over 200,000, including many beauty professionals. Some of them regularly donate money to keep the group running. Others spare some time to help Raines serve the homeless. So far, Raines has made a real impact on people's lives, and she has been considered as a role model for a great number of people.

Uncertainty pops up frequently in conversations. The pandemic, and the growing climate disasters heighten our awareness of our inability to control many current challenges. No wonder we're invaded by anxiety and isolation. We know there are stress-reduction techniques like yoga and exercise. Another much-overlooked one that restores sense of well-being is poetry.
Poetry reconnects us with the beauty of the world, while also naming its difficulties. Rather than dismissing hardships, poetry reminds us that others have also lost a loved one, experienced disappointments-have suffered as we now suffer. Poetry allows us to identify our personal confusions, breaks our feeling of isolation, and confirms our sense of belonging. Poetry leads us toward wisdom and acceptance.
Science agrees. The Arts & Mind Lab at Johns Hopkins University offers convincing evidence that poetry is good for our health. A study from 2013 in Philippines showed that guided poetry writing sessions significantly lessened depression in a group of mistreated adolescents. Written eight hundred years ago, the poem The Guest House invites us to view life's experiences and the feelings that arise from them as temporary visitors in the “guest house” of self. With patience and compassion, the author Jalal al-Din Rumi advises us to recognize that even negative moods are precious teachers for our growth.
Think of poetry as an entrance to a timeless place where we find comfort, companionship, connection, wisdom, and healing. Poetry names the disconnects as well, where we have gone blind to threats and personal sorrows that threaten to overwhelm us. With its precision of language, and its naming of experience, poetry, in a small space, usually one page, packs a strong hit. Entering a poem, readers can sense painful experiences are re-framed and can be given a new understanding by a poem. That's because poetry reflects a rich mix of the sweetness and bitterness in life. It refreshes our minds and offers invented landscapes of imagery. For your own peace of mind, I encourage you to take up a friendship with poetry.

Most of us are aware of “Is the glass half full or half empty?” test. If you pick the former, you're an “optimist”; otherwise, you're a “pessimist”. It's not a black-or-white test, but it can measure how one sees life.
According to psychologist Lissy Ann Puno, most of us grow up wanting to be an optimist-a person who can see the good in any situation and can stay hopeful when facing challenges. For some people, though, life happens and they start to see the glass half-empty instead. Pessimists tend to see the wrong in every situation, and blame external factors and circumstances when things aren't going their way.
Being continuously fed with bad news and disappointments can turn optimistic children into adults that are critical of almost everything. For some, the shift becomes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents. Others still remain optimistic, thanks to a positive household growing up.
“This is why developing optimism in young children is crucial for their development as adults,” said Lissy Ann. If adopted at an early age, this powerful personality quality can help children grow into strong adults capable of handling life's circumstances with confidence, courage, and hope. What parent wouldn't want that for their children?
“Children are seen as natural optimists,” Lissy Ann said. They come into this world with unbiased eyes and a pure heart that hasn't been influenced by social expectations, life experiences, severe mental shock, or authority figures yet. Whether a child grows up to be optimistic or not is part genetic and part environmental. “Childhood experiences, parent-child connection, or authority figures will all have some influence,” she said. Although optimism (or the lack of it) could be passed down genetically, it can also be taught.

Then she would spend five minutes in 42 the dishes in a seemingly random but in fact 43 order. Then the most important part: taking pictures. After that, she would choose one of the 44 and click in the filter app. The food eventually looked 10 times more delicious than it really was, but we had no 45 to really enjoy it-it all went cold.Actually Stella's real life is much less elegant. For example, she hates to wash the dishes, so she leaves them in the sink for days.
Many people care too much about others' opinions and try too hard to 46 others. They find it hard to be 47 and to accept themselves, and thus they are afraid to show their 48 life on social media. What they are trying to prove is 49 what they lack in reality. But this will not bring any 50 to reality, as they still 51 the same old pattern of life.
If they really want an elegant life, they should put more 52 into achieving it 53 fabricating it. Being more confident, 54 themselves and trying their best to be better are much more meaningful than 55 their life on social media.

Dietary Habits
It's well-known that we can do nothing without good health. However, what concerns me most is that more and more students tend to eat junk food like instant noodles, especially before going to bed at night. What's worse, many students have an unbalanced diet. As is often the case, some girls only eat vegetables to keep slim.
Simply eating food like these is not good for their health, thus lacking nutrition and energy, which can't help them deal with heavy academic burden. Personally, nutrition and health are essential to us all. We should eat a balanced diet.

Swim Buddies
I leaned (倚靠) over the side of the boat and stared at the clear blue water. This was my last chance, I thought. “I hope you find a green turtle (乌龟) today, Alexa, and realize your dream of swimming with it,” Dad said, as if reading my thought. “Me, too,” my brother, Jonah, said. “I want to see one, too!”
I lifted my head up, turned toward Jonah, and glared. Why, why, why did he always insist on following me everywhere, doing everything I did? Make your own friends. I wanted to scream at him. Find your own green sea turtle! But I said nothing. Ever since Jonah was a little kid and they discovered he acted so differently because he had autism (自闭症), I had been trained to show understanding for him and trained to put up with a lot, including his shouts at the top of his lungs.
“We'll stop here, and if we are lucky enough to see turtles,” Father said, “remember not to get too close, or they will be scared away. Do the 'dead man's float' and wait. If they're curious enough, they'll check you out.”
Jonah said - too loudly, of course, so everyone on the boat could hear him -“That turtle sounds just like me. It wants to be friends but doesn't know how, like me. I really, really, really want to see one, Dad.”
Putting the mouthpiece into my mouth, I dived into the water. I swam in a different direction and searched the seafloor. Suddenly, I saw a huge green turtle chewing on the seaweed. Excited as I was, I did the dead man's float, lying as still as possible. “Come on, buddy (伙伴),” I said to myself. “Come to swim with me!”
As I watched the lonely turtle, I couldn't help but think of Jonah's words about friends - Jonah didn't have friends. He functioned well enough to be in a regular class, but he was still strange enough that the other kids stayed away from him. This turtle might be the only one we could find today. And I knew that Jonah had got his heart set on seeing one, just like I did. Even though Jonah made my life really hard. I understood how he felt. I swam to Jonah.

【参考范文】
Together, we swam back toward my turtle. We stopped. I went into dead man mode and Jonah followed. Silently, we watched it eat. And finally, the turtle began to move up toward the surface, toward us. We moved apart as the turtle broke the surface right between us. It took a breath, then slowly swam away. Jonah and I swam along on either side of the turtle for several minutes. I almost couldn't believe it.I actually swam with a green sea turtle! My dream came true.
Emerging from the water, Jonah shouted, “The turtle is our friend now!” Instead of embarrassed at his shouting, I smiled at my brother. “Sure,” I agreed. “Wouldn't it be nice if it was always so easy to make friends?” Jonah was too excited to hear my question. But my dad heard me and smiled. “Thank you, Alexa,” he said. I shrugged. Sure, whatever, for a few minutes today, my brother and a turtle and I were swimming buddies, and that was sure to become an awesome memory-maybe not for the turtle, but definitely for Jonah and me.
