TO CLONE OR NOT TO CLONE?
Cloning is the process of making an exact copy of a plant or animal and developing it either naturally or artificially.Natural cloning has been going on for generations. For example, gardeners have been using a form of cloning when they take a cutting from a plant and place it in a suitable medium, such as soil.Another example of natural cloning is identical twins, who are produced from the same egg[1].

For years, there had been attempts①to clone animals artificially. The first successfully cloned animal was a sheep named Dolly② in 1996.At first,Dolly grew normally, but later she developed an illness that is more normally found in much older animals[2].She lived for six and a half years, only half the life of the sheep from which she was cloned[3].After Dolly, scientists have cloned more than 20 mammal species③,including camels, cattle, deer, dogs, goats and mice. However, they have found a similar pattern of④ health problems with these other species as well. This has led to questions such as,“Will this be a major issue for all cloned animals?”“Will it continue to happen forever?”.
In January 2018,the cloning of two long-tailed⑤ monkeys,Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua,was announced by Chinese scientists. They were the first-ever primates⑥(the order of mammals which include apes, monkeys, and humans)to have been cloned![4] In comparison with⑦ other species, cloning primates has proved to be “much harder”,and doing so with non-reproductive cells⑧ was even more complicated⑨[5].Dr.Sun Qiang, director of the research team, said they had been wholly⑩ devoted to⑪ the research and had been taking care of more than 1,000 monkeys 24 hours a day,7 days a week for more than 5 years. There had been a number of failures before they eventually found a way to successfully clone a monkey[6].The reason they worked so hard to break this technical barrier was to get animals with edited genes and produce animal models that are helpful for medical research and human health.[7]

A team from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School found that mice lacking a specific gene developed an unusually powerful form of brown fat tissue, which improved longevity and increased exercise capacity by approximately 30%.The team is now working on a drug to replicate these effects in humans.“Exercise capacity reduces as you get older, and to have a technique that could enhance exercise performance would be very beneficial for healthful aging,”said Stephen Vatner, senior author of the study in Aging Cell.
This study revealed brown fat improves blood flow to muscles during physical activity. The genetically modified mice produced unusually high amounts of active brown fat and showed about 30% better exercise performance than normal mice, both in speed and time to exhaustion. The modified mice, which lack a protein called RGS14,live about 20% longer than normal mice, with females living longer than males.Even at advanced ages, they maintain a healthier appearance and witness no loss of hair and graying that appear in normal elderly mice.Their brown fat tissue also protects them from certain diseases.
The researchers also transplanted(移植)the brown fat to normal mice. They noted that the recipients gained similar benefits within days.Transplants using regular brown fat from normal mice,by contrast, took eight weeks to produce much slighter improvements.
The discovery could eventually prolong the total time when people enjoy good mental and physical health.Rather than develop a treatment that addresses aging broadly,Vatner said his team plans to test for specific benefits such as improved exercise capacity and metabolism(新陈代谢).In the meantime, techniques such as ice baths can increase brown fat naturally.Studies have found such efforts produced short-term benefits that range from enhanced immune system function to improved metabolic health, but Vatner said none of the studies have run long enough to find any effect on healthful aging.
4.What does the underlined word“replicate”mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Exam. B.Copy.
C.Lighten. D.Explain.
根据第一段中的“A team from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School found that...The team is now working on a drug to replicate these effects in humans.”
√
5.What did the study find about brown fat?
A.It is produced by a certain protein.
B.It is used to treat specific illnesses.
C.It reduces exercise-related injuries.
D.It helps maintain exercise tolerance.
根据第二段中的“This study revealed brown fat...both in speed and time to exhaustion.”
√
6.Why were two different transplants conducted?
A.To stress transplanting brown fat is hard.
B.To show the underlying logic transplants.
C.To compare functions of two transplants.
D.To prove brown fat benefits normal mice.
√
7.What is Vatner's attitude toward deliberate cold exposure?
A.Mindful. B.Unclear.
C.Pessimistic. D.Approving.
√
根据最后一段中的“In the meantime...have run long enough to find any effect on healthful aging.” 故选A。

The researchers also used brain-imaging tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers as they performed non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. It was found that the brain's language regions were mostly inactive during such activities.____________________________________________
A.In other words,we can think without words.
上文“The researchers also used brain-imaging tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers as they performed non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. It was found that the brain's language regions were mostly inactive during such activities.” 故选A。
So,if language isn't necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it? Fedorenko, one of the study's authors, has found the answer.
__________________________________________________ Most things we have learned about the world are through language.By being able to share complex information through language, humans have gained an evolutionary advantage in the world.
C.Language serves mainly as a tool for communication.
根据上文“So,if language isn't necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it? Fedorenko, one of the study's authors, has found the answer.”
____________________________________________________________
_____For example, the English sentence “he rang the doorbell” is usually phrased as “the doorbell rang” in Japanese. As a result,English speakers are more likely to focus on the person responsible for the action than Japanese speakers, according to Psychology Today.
G.While language doesn't generate thoughts,it can influence how we think.
下文“For example, the English sentence‘he rang the doorbell’is usually phrased as ‘the doorbell rang’in Japanese. As a result,English speakers are more likely to focus on the person responsible for the action than Japanese speakers, according to Psychology Today.”
