Apple snails(福寿螺)are an alien species that can cause significant damage to ecosystems by consuming plants that provide food and habitats for various wildlife. They also have a unique ability to create a flow that brings floating food particles(颗粒)to themselves by swinging their flexible feet underwater,a process known as “pedal foot collection” by biologists.
To understand the principle behind pedal foot collection,Anupam Pandey,a professor at Syracuse University,designed a robot the size of a centimeter that imitates the apple snail's motion rhythmically. He then placed the robot underwater in a tank and shook foam particles on the surface to see if it could collect them,discovering that the robot functioned similarly to a pump.
“We found that our robot was able to drag particles from distances that were five times its size. But more interestingly,we found a perfect speed at which pumping maximizes,” explains Pandey. “This perfect speed seemed to depend on robot's shape as well as the characteristics of the liquid. Combining experiments and modeling,we predicted the perfect conditions under which the robot pumps the most liquid.”
Most plastic collection devices in the ocean create strong disturbances at the water surface and cause microparticles to mix in the water,leading to more plastic pollution. However,this robot operates near the water's surface with minimal interference and potentially provides a solution to this problem.
“What's special about this research is how interdisciplinary(跨学科的)it is. Biologists may be interested in this,and it has several potential applications in engineering liquid flows at small scales,sensing and driving of floating objects and so on,” Pandey says. “It will not only advance the understanding of liquid transport near surfaces but lay the groundwork for future research as well.”
