Grammar and Vocabulary Section A Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. Spider found nursing its offspring with milk The words “spider” and “milk” are not two that you’d generally expect to see in the same sentence. But that’s exactly what researchers at an Asian academy of sciences have found: a spider mother feeding her babies with her own milk. This fascinating behavior ____1____ (observe) in a species of spider called Toxeus magnus. The researchers first made the discovery after noticing a baby spider hanging onto its mother in the lab in a way, ____2____ reminded them of a baby mammal (哺乳动物). Usually, only mammals produce milk for their babies, but some bird species can produce something known as “crop milk” ____3____ feed their young. However, the level of parental care ____4____ (see) in these spiders is quite rare. Female spiders of this species can lay up to 36 eggs ____5____ one time. When the baby spiders first hatched, they ate ‘milk’ that their mother had deposited in droplets around their nest. But soon, they began lining up to drink the milk directly from their mother. They continued doing this ____6____ they were about 40 days old, well after they were old enough to find food on their own. To test what they were observing, the researchers painted the mother spider to stop the milk ____7____ (reach) her babies. After this, all the baby spiders younger than 20 days old died. When the mother was removed from the nest, the older spiders grew more slowly and were ____8____ (likely) to survive to adulthood. This suggests that the milk was giving them a significant advantage. Isn’t it amazing to think about ____9____ diverse and unexpected nature can be? Spiders, usually thought of as independent and sometimes even scary creatures, showing such intense parental care and producing milk for their young _____10_____ (be) truly a remarkable discovery. This shows that there’s always something new and surprising to learn about the world around us, even from creatures as tiny as spiders! 【答案】1. was observed 2. which 3. to 4. seen 5. at 6. until 7. reaching 8. less likely 9. how 10. is 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 故填was observed。 故填to。 短语at one time表示“一次”。故填at。 短语stop (from) doing sth. 故填how。 【10题详解】 考查时态。句意:蜘蛛通常被认为是独立且有时甚至令人畏惧的生物,但它们却展现出如此强烈的养育子女的关怀之情,并为幼崽分泌乳汁,这一发现着实令人惊叹。陈述事实用一般现在时,主语为动名词短语showing such intense parental care and producing milk for their young,谓语用单数。故填is。 Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Station manager Darren Williams believes a joint approach, ____11____ by mauve (紫色) jackets, can improve passenger experience. Previously, staff were divided into Network Rail, Southern, and Southeastern employees, but now they work as “Team Victoria.” Executives from all three organizations hope this ____12____ will serve as a model for the UK rail network, amid pressures from political, industrial, and consumer groups. Since privatization in 1994, the rail network has been divided between infrastructure (基础建设) (owned by Network Rail), train operators, and rolling-stock owners. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling now seeks to reunite infrastructure and train operations within regions under one chief executive. At Victoria, John Halsall of Network Rail and David Statham of Southeastern have been working on this integration for two years. Halsall notes that the rail system’s complexity requires synchronized (同步的) operations, which is challenging when different parts have ____13____ targets. For instance, Southeastern aims to run as many trains as possible, while Network Rail needs to cancel some for infrastructure maintenance. To address these issues, they are setting common objectives for passenger experience and on-time ____14____, putting teams under one leader, and agreeing on infrastructure access to balance service and repairs. This requires strong leadership and a(n) ____15____ to combined efforts. Mark Phillips of the Rail Safety and Standards Board supports the ____16____ towards a more integrated system. Elaine Clark of the Rail Forum Midlands agrees but suggests ____17____ integration is more effective than a national approach. Despite concerns about a return to British Rail’s model, Halsall emphasizes the need for ____18____ objectives to overcome internal conflicts. Campaigners for full re-nationalization, like Ellie Harrison of Bring Back British Rail, remain ____19____, fearing profit-driven maintenance companies. However, early signs of success at Victoria show _____20_____, as its passenger satisfaction ranking improved from 18th to 16th between 2017 and 2018. 【答案】11. K 12. G 13. C 14. A 15. B 16. E 17. Reading Comprehension Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. We are quite good at letting our minds wander while performing a routine motor skill. We can do the dinner dishes while thinking about our next vacation, or drink coffee while reading a newspaper. But psychologists ask this question: Do multitasking humans operate effectively and efficiently when they really need to ____21____? The ____22____ suggests that the answer is no. One problem is interference (干扰). In the 1930s, the psychologist John Ridley Stroop showed there is a danger of ____23____ when the brain receives unexpected information while carrying out a routine task. To see what he found, try this exercise: Say the name of each shape in Column 1 out loud. Then, do the same for Column 2. Then, do the same for Column 3. Most likely you completed the first column ____24____, went a bit slower in the second column and hesitated, or even made an error, in the third column. Because you are much quicker at reading words out loud than naming shapes, you had difficulty ____25____ the incorrect information that you read. Of course, this exercise is a bit unnatural, but it shows that multitaskers are very likely to make mistakes and hesitate if they get interference from the ____26____ set of stimuli while switching between tasks. Research also suggests that switching between tasks significantly ____27____ completion. If the two tasks are very routine and not too much ____28____ — say, singing along to a new tune while milking a crying baby — the brain does not need to switch between the tasks because the two require different input channels. The humming requires listening and singing, while the milking requires sight and the use of arm and hand muscles. But when a similar kind of attention is needed, the pace ____29____ as the brain must switch back and forth between the two tasks. A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that switching between tasks like solving math problems and identifying shapes increases time _____30_____, especially with unfamiliar tasks. The brain takes longer to switch and assign resources due to the need to activate different sets of rules for each task. This delay makes multitasking less _____31_____ than focusing on one task. ____32____, the brain shows less neural (神经的) activity when handling two complex tasks at the same time, leading to longer completion times. For example, multitaskers took 1.5 times longer to write a report and check email compared to those who did each task _____33_____. All these _____34_____ do not mean that you should never “whistle while you work”. But what about the digital showoff who sits through a university lecture while text-messaging on a tiny mobile phone screen? Remind them of this: The _____35_____ machinery of our digital world was most likely developed by very single-minded people concentrating intently on a single task. 21. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Movie makers constantly seek new ways to draw people into theaters. Over the years, they’ve added sound and color, widescreen formats, and advanced computer-generated imagery to enhance the movie-going experience. Many special effects started as gimmicks (噱头) but have become essential components of big-budget films, while others had more temporary appeal. One peculiar gimmick was the effort to add odors (气味) to movies. Several serious attempts were made to enhance films with odors. In 1959, “Behind the Great Wall” used 50 odors through a theater’s air-conditioning system. In 1969, producer Mike Todd Jr. introduced Smell-O-Vision for “Scent of a Mystery,” releasing scents like pipe smoke and food to each seat. The film failed, and Smell-O-Vision disappeared from the industry. Another filmmaker, William Castle, employed various inexpensive gimmicks to attract audiences to his low-budget horror films. For “Macabre” (1963), he offered $1,000 life insurance policies in case viewers died of fright. In “Thirteen Ghosts,” he used “Illusion-O,” providing handheld ghost glasses that allowed viewers to see or remove the ghosts. Although these gimmicks were only marginally successful and often caused more laughter than screams, Castle’s movies were entertaining and profitable. “Thirteen Ghosts” was even remade in 2001. The 1975 movie “Earthquake” introduced Sensurround Sound, promising sound powerful enough to “crack ribs.” This effect was achieved using large subwoofer speakers that emitted powerful vibrations (震动). However, the vibrations disturbed audiences in neighbouring theaters, leading most theater owners to abandon Sensurround. Only three more films — “Midway”(1976), “Rollercoaster”(1977), and “Battlestar Galactica” (1978) featured the effect. The most famous special effect is 3-D. Studios experimented with three-dimensional photography as early as 1922, but the first hit 3-D movie was “House of Wax” in 1953. This effect requires special glasses to provide each eye with a slightly different image, creating a sense of depth.Although dozens of 3-D movies were released between 1953 and 1955, technical problems and eyestrain complaints caused the novelty to wear off. For the next 40 years, 3-D films became less common, primarily associated with IMAX releases. However, with improved technology, 3-D has made a comeback. In 2009, a 3-D film made nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, ensuring that more 3-D movies will follow. Even though some gimmicks failed, others were linked to box office successes. With advancing technology, new gimmicks will continue to emerge, potentially offering even more exciting experiences for moviegoers. 36. What can be learned about William Castle’s gimmicks? A. They scared viewers greatly. B. They didn’t cost much to make. C. They didn’t help to attract viewers. D. They are still seen in today’s movies. 37. What do Smell-O-Vision and Sensurround Sound have in common? A. Neither featured sensory effects. B. Neither was widely adopted in theaters. C. Both were created by the same filmmaker. D. Both involved visual enhancements to movies. 38. Which statement about 3-D movies is true according to the passage? A. The first hit 3-D movie was released in 1953. B. 3-D movies were first introduced in the 1970s. C. 3-D movies were popular from the 1950s to the 1990s. D. 3-D technology was mainly used for horror films before 2009. 39. Most of us enjoy stories — whether it's reading an interesting book, listening to a friend tell a joke or watching a plot unfold on television. Did you know that writing stories is actually good for you, too? On 23 June it is National Writing Day, an annual celebration of creative writing. It's also a chance to understand the benefits of creative writing and using your imagination. What is creative writing? Creative writing is based on your imagination — fiction and poetry are good examples. Fiction is written work that describes imaginary events and people. Fiction can include novels and short stories. However, these aren't the only forms of creative writing. Scripts (for a play, film or TV show); fan fiction (when readers write stories inspired by their favourite characters); and song lyrics count. Is it really good for me? Many people find creative writing cathartic, which means they feel relief because they're releasing thoughts and emotions that they've kept bottled up. According to the Anna Freud Centre for Children and Families, writing about a character's feelings can make it easier to understand your own feelings. They also say that creative writing can be useful tool for self-care. Another benefit of creative writing is that it can boost your self-esteem (how positive you feel about yourself). It can help you realize that your voice is important and powerful. Children's author Mark Haddon says,”It's more than learning a skill. It's about learning that you, your family, your culture and your view of the world are rich and interesting and important.” The power of imagination For many people, creative writing offers a “time out”or escape from real life, including their problems and worries. This space can help you to think more positively about a problem you might have, or simply allow you to escape to a magical, make-believe world. National Writing Day:How do I take part? Antonla Byatt from First Story, the charity behind National Writing Day, explains, “This year's National Writing Day activity challenges everyone to fill a box with a piece of creative writing, such as a poem, a letter or story, exploring the theme of connection. Once you've finished writing, share your words with another person to create a thread of connection. Your voice is powerful. Use it on National Writing Day, and beyond.” You can find ideas and free resources at firststory.org.uk/writeday Need some ideas? That difference might be to change the way we think about ourselves and the world. Sometimes it might even affect the way we act — which is obviously more important, and less forgivable to forget. By way of example let me offer one idea. There is the case put forward in 2003 by Donald Brownlee and Peter Ward in their absorbing book The Life and Death of Planet Earth, that biological existence here has only another 500 million years left — at an optimistic best. The processes that will gradually burn the Earth, dry up the oceans, and destroy the planet within the next 7 billion years will have already extinguished all living things long before that. Bringing together cosmology (宇宙学) and biology. Brownlee and Ward worked out the order of events in which the planet’s complex ecosystems will disappear in the reverse order of their appearance, until eventually the world again belongs to nothing but microbes — its first and longest-lived inhabitants. This will follow a return to the seas of more complex organisms, trying to escape the heat of the nearing sun. But their descendants (后代) will eventually find even the oceans too terrible, and will disappear in their turn. Brownlee and Ward add that the project of humanity moving to other planets is an improbable one, for the distance to suitable stars orbited by worlds that are or could be made inhabitable is too great a barrier. The inevitability, in short, is that the end of the habitable world is in sight. Life will have its billion years, and then be gone, to be followed by the planet itself. There is not a lot to be done about this in practical terms, except to be relieved that life has half a billion years to go, and the planet 7.5 billion. But the difference that these facts should make to our thinking, say Brownlee and Ward, is to urge us to appreciate the world more, and look after it while we have it. This type of event is sometimes called “zero-infinity”situations: the chance they will happen is tiny; but if they do, the scale of the disaster will be immense. Their “zero” part might make them seem dismissible, were it not for the fact that there is a new risk in the mix: a few individuals, or even just one, can turn the zero into infinity by, say, creating and releasing a virus against which human life is powerless. That chilling possibility is one worth remembering. I suggest building a Repository of Good Insights which should be brought out and aired at regular intervals, in case we forget. If any of them should be needed, whether for research or for practical reasons, it would save time not to have to reinvent them. 43. What is the main argument presented by Donald Brownlee and Peter Ward in their book TheLife and Death of Planet Earth? A. Human beings will move to other planets. B. Biological existence on Earth will eventually end. C. The Earth’s climate will remain stable for some time. D. The Earth’s ecosystems will remain without significant changes. 44. According to Brownlee and Ward, what should we do to Earth? A. Value and protect it. B. Find ways to leave it. C. Prevent its destruction. D. Reverse its development. 45. What does the term “zero-infinity” situations refer to in the passage? A. Common situations with little impact. B. Rare situations with big consequences. C. Situations where the Earth will inevitably be destroyed. D. Situations where theories have no practical implications. 46. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Humanity must find practical ways to survive. B. Significant insights should be preserved and appreciated. C. “Zero-infinity”situations are not as common as expected. D. The Earth will be destroyed by natural disasters in millions of years. 【答案】43. B 44. A 45. B 46. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. We need a special day to recall lost loved ones Today, we recognize International Day of the Potato, while tomorrow brings World No Tobacco Day. With so many special days filling our calendars, one might wonder if we really need another. Yet, amid the busyness of these days, a desire grows for a time to remember those we’ve lost. For many, life is marked by important dates that shape our feelings: birthdays, anniversaries, and, of course, the day we lost someone. ____47____ It can be hard to talk about, and we often hesitate to weigh down friends with our sadness, fearing it might spoil their day. Instead, we tend to mark these days alone, quietly thinking about our memories. ____48____ Imagine a gathering where we share a meal, laughter, and stories, all while honoring those who have passed away. As time goes on, our collection of memories only grows richer. Friends who left us too soon have children who now want to hear about their parents — the joyful moments spent on vacations, the laughter shared during holidays, and the silly things that brought smiles to our faces. In these shared memories, we find a way to celebrate rather than mourn (悼念), creating a warm and connected atmosphere. ____49____ However, many of us shy away from doing so, fearing the openness that comes with it. While the Mexican Day of the Dead might seem too intense for our tastes, it serves as a beautiful reminder of the importance of remembering. The idea of cooking our loved ones’ favorite dishes helps us connect to their spirits, allowing us to honor their memory in a real way. As Sir Anthony Seldon wisely observes, we often miss our loved ones more when we avoid thinking about them. ____50____ This could be a chance to come together, share our stories, and celebrate their lives in a meaningful way. After all, in remembering, we keep their spirit alive, weaving them into the fabric of our shared experiences. A. But what if we chose a different path? B. So, why not create a special day to raise a glass to those we’ve lost? C. I’m drawn to the idea of celebration Day on which to remember our beloved dead. D. Maybe quiet remembrance is enough. E. Should we remind our children of these times? F. There’s a strong human need to express feelings and share our stories. 【答案】47. A 48. C 49. F 50. After all, in remembering, we keep their spirit alive, weaving them into the fabric of our shared experiences.(这或许是一个让我们相聚、分享彼此故事并以有意义的方式缅怀他们生命的契机。 B。 IV. Summary Writing 51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. How Thankfulness Help Us When you feel thankful for things you've received, that's gratitude. You never feel it from nowhere; you are clear who or what is responsible. “Gratitude is how you relate to others,”says Willibald Ruch, a psychology professor at the University of Zurich. He and other researchers believe this understanding of our reliance on others is becoming more difficult today.”With commercial and social media, everything makes the younger generation feel that they are the center of the universe,” says Tamiko Zablith, founder of the consulting firm Minding Manners. “If it's all about them, why thank others?” If true, this would be a disturbing health trend, because thanking others in heartfelt ways carries long-lasting effects. Canadian researchers found that people who wrote thank-you letters or performed good deeds for a six-week period decreased their pain, upped their energy, accomplished more every day, and improved their mental health. And you can experience these benefits at any age. Swedish researchers have found that people ages 77 to 90 who choose to be thankful are happier and stronger.”When they can't change something, they choose gratitude and focus on what's good, like still being living by themselves,” says study author Helena Honder, at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Gratitude is infectious, as well: Those who are helped are more likely to pay kindness forward. One study found that when someone is thanked, it more than doubles his or her chances of being helpful again, likely because he or she enjoys feeling socially valued. Zablith likes the reaction she gets when she thanks a stranger who holds the door open for her at Starbucks. “The look on his face is shock,”Zablith says. “He'll be nicer to the cashier, the next person he sees at work.” Let's remember: gratitude isn't just a feeling—it's a powerful choice to recognize and appreciate others. With gratitude, we not only uplift ourselves but also contribute to a kinder, more connected world. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Gratitude means being thankful for what we receive. One of the most obvious problems is the large amount of waste paper and disposable food containers left in classrooms and canteens. To address these problems, we students can take several steps. Firstly, we should raise awareness among our classmates about the importance of environmental protection. For example, we can organize a class meeting to discuss how to reduce waste and recycle properly. Secondly, we can start small by making a habit of separating waste in our daily life. We should put recyclable materials like paper and plastic bottles into the recycling bins and encourage others to do the same. Finally, we can advocate for reducing the use of disposable items. We can bring our own reusable water bottles and lunch boxes to school, setting a good example for others. By taking these actions, we can contribute to creating a greener campus. One of the most obvious problems is the large amount of waste paper and disposable food containers left in classrooms and canteens. 拓展句:One of the most obvious problems is that there is a large amount of waste paper and disposable food containers which are left in classrooms and canteens. 【点睛】【高分句型1】One of the most obvious problems is the large amount of waste paper and disposable food containers left in classrooms and canteens.(运用过去分词短语作后置定语) 【高分句型2】We can bring our own reusable water bottles and lunch boxes to school, setting a good example for others.(运用现在分词短语“setting a good example for others”作伴随状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 封浜高中2025学年第一学期 高三英语期中考试试卷 (2025.11) 满分:140分 考试时间:120分钟 I. Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A. arrivals B.commitment C.conflicting D. doubtful E. move F. regional G. partnership H. promise I.pursued J. shared K. signified Rail Operators seek to mend the gaps London Victoria train station, the UK’s second busiest, handled 75 million passengers in 2017-18 but ranked 16th out of 18 in a 2018 passenger satisfaction survey. III. 21. D. 3-D technology was mainly used for horror films before 2009. 39. What is the main idea of the passage? A The history of movie technology B. The emergence and decline of 3-D movies. C. The evolution and impact of gimmicks in movies. D. The financial success of movies with special effects. (B) Spark your imagination Creative writing can help your mental health. On National Writing Day 2023 the #247 Challenge asked people to write a 24-word story on poem starting with the phrase “One day”. Here are two entries from schools. One day, on the outskirts of town. a cardboard box was shrouded in an eerie mist. I waited for the untold horrors to unravel. Dixons McMilan Academy, Bradford One day, Schools will be open. hearts that were broken, normality will be awoken. all that was broken, one day, all will be solved. Nonsuch High School, Sutton 40. The passage is mainly intended to A. introduce the founder of National Writing Day B. highlight the influence of National Writing Day C. explain the theme of this year's National Writing Day D. encourage people to take part in National Writing Day 41. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of creative writing? A. It involves just fiction and poem writing. B. It leads to a deep insight into your feelings. C. It gives you solutions to real-life problems D. It enables you to respect other people's work. 42. What can be found at the website of firststory.org.uk/writeday? A. The inspiration for your own work. B. The works of previous prize winners. C. The person you can share your writing with. D. The introduction to some creative writing courses. (C) Good ideas and striking insights are not so common that they can be allowed to float away on the slipstream of time without making a difference. A Value and protect it. Section C Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. F There’s a strong human need to express feelings and share our stories. IV. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ V.
