For only 20 yuan, Fang Wenjing could buy her lunch at a community canteen (社区食堂) in Hangzhou. She had a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice—all very healthy. “The dishes have a home-cooked taste.” said Fang.
Community canteens have become more and more popular in China recently. They were made for the old people at first. It can be difficult for some old people to cook on their own, so the canteens offer help. They can have lunch and dinner within a 10-minute walk, or community workers can bring the dishes to them. Zhang Suxia, a worker at a community canteen in Hangzhou, said that the cooks made special meals for the old. The food is soft and has less oil.
Now, the community canteens are bringing in more young people. For those who don’t want to order takeout meals or eat at restaurants, they can have healthier and cheaper dishes in the canteens.
This also encourages community canteens to think of creative ways to serve food and make things easier for people. A canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community brings out buffet-style (自助模式) dishes. The dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. The price is lower than those of restaurants close by.
There wouldn’t be so many community canteens without the work of local governments. They give subsidies (补贴) for building the canteens as well as the dining cost of the old people. There are now more than 6,700 community canteens in China, according to Tianyancha.
1.Who were the community canteens first built for?
2.What is special about the food for the old according to Zhang Suxia?
3.Why do more and more young people turn to the community canteens?
4.How much should you pay if you buy 500 grams of food in a canteen in Beijing’s Lugu community?
5.How do the local governments help the community canteens?

4.根据“The dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100 grams.”可知,菜品按每100克2.48元出售,500克的价格为2.48×5=12.4元。故填12.4 yuan.

Our neighbourhood is a large, friendly and lively community. More than 30 families live there. Last month, something wonderful happened in our neighbourhood. We built a community garden. Mrs Lin thought of the idea. She has a backyard vegetable garden that everyone admires (羡慕), and next to the house is a large piece of land that is hers.
Mrs Lin taught maths at our school until she retired (退休) last year. “Not everyone has room for a garden,” said Mrs Lin. “Let’s build a garden that will be good for each family in the neighbourhood. I am ready to be a volunteer, and try to make our community better.”
People in the community helped dig the garden, and Mrs Lin told us about what to plant. On March 3, our neighbours came together at the garden to plant and water vegetable seeds. Then we had a big celebration. Mrs Lin gave a talk and we ate sandwiches, apples and carrots for lunch. Families in the neighbourhood volunteer to care for the garden, and we will all share in the results. What a great gift to the community! We are lucky to live in a neighbourhood like this.

In the USA, there’s a special art project. People create art on bricks (砖块) and put them on display (展示). Sarah started this special project outside her blue house.
It all started in 2022. Like many artists (艺术家), Sarah wanted to express herself. She felt painting bricks was a fun and free way because she didn’t need to worry about being perfect (完美的). And she wanted others to experience the same sense of freedom (自由感). So she made a sign with the words “Take a brick, paint it, bring it to display!” She hung it up and hoped her neighbours (邻居) would love the idea. They did. Two years later, over 300 bricks are on display. And new bricks keep coming in, each different from the next.
The project is not just about art; it’s about connecting with others. Sarah believes that painting the bricks brings happiness not only to the artists, but also to everyone who sees them. Through the project, Sarah hopes to help people express themselves, feel connected, and be part of a community (交流).
What a creative project!

In Kibaha, near the capital Dares Salaam, architects (建筑师) built a new village called Hope Village with “earth printing”. The project was finished in February, 2025.
Helped by charity One Heart, Hope Village is designed by Hassell and Clarke Hopkins Clarke (CHC) to help children from across the country who have unsafe home environments.
The village has offered schooling for up to 480 children, as well as childcare and skills training for girls between 3~18 years old. In the center of Hope Village is its landmark building—a community center. It is a 3D-printed design, and it is used as a school hall and dining hall during the week and open to the public for events at weekends.
The walls are 3D printed with earth so they can be 100% recycled. “We wanted to make sure that we’re able to build walls that could circulate (循环) air in the building, but also bring in light at the same time, and turning to 3D printing allowed for an open, ‘porous’ (多孔的) wall design.” said Mark, the lead designer from CHC.
The project is not just to use design to help local people improve their daily life but to bring hope and education in Kibaha and leave it there.
