Memo
To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2025
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for you to refer to when you answer the phones.
Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Ten activities, skipping, baseball, dive, shoot, badminton, bowling, boxing, cycling, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking (远足) will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to use the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45 pm to 3:45 pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.
1. What is the purpose of the Memo?
A. To attract the students’ interest in the programme.
B. To help the staff explain the programme to the parents.
C. To require the parents to select a sport for their child.
D. To remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on time.
2. What can we learn from the part Sports 2: Gym?
A. Students must arrive before 6 pm.
B. Students can play basketball in the gym.
C. All the ten activities in the gym are free for the students.
D. A teacher will be on duty for all of the activities.
3. Which of the following is true?
A. Each sport will take only one hour.
B. Students will be charged for all the four sports.
C. Students are required to take bottles of water.
D. Teachers will accompany students on each sport.
B
On Thursday night my two adult children took us out to dinner as our daughter lives in Bathurst and she will be there for Father’s Day with her husband’s side of the family. Two of our grandchildren were able to join us.
Having pre-celebrated my Father’s Day and with it on our minds, my wife asked this question only this morning: “Do you remember anything about your father?”
While this subject had come up before, the question had not been put so bluntly. I answered, “No. My only memory is of the few photos outside.” You see, my father died when I was only four years old.
Many people have lost their father early in life and it is easy to feel somewhat sorry for having to deal with such a situation, especially when the death has occurred when you are at an early age. On reflection, I think I do not remember anything because he passed away when he was a member of the Royal Australian Air Force. He was a Corporal (下士) doing land-based duties; however, a medical condition took his life. It was 1942.
The 2nd World War was in full battle and Australia was being attacked. My Mum and I, with my younger brother, were living with my grandparents and I can only imagine the emotional circumstances that existed in the household at that time. Probably not something that would leave a memory.
What I would like to say at this time, as the question is often asked, “What did you learn from your father?” The thing I learnt from his passing, at the age of 28, is a love of life. What I do remember is growing up wondering if I would live to his age, and after I did, thinking each year of the bonus (津贴) of life I had been blessed with when compared to my father.
I have sometimes felt disappointment in not knowing my father but life has moved on. However, can I say to those who do have fathers, celebrate today with him and return to him all the love and happiness he has given to you.
4. Why did the author’s children take him out to dinner on Thursday night?
A. To celebrate the author’s birthday in advance.
B. Because the author had a special memory of that day.
C. To gather with all the family members for a big dinner.
D. Because his daughter couldn’t be with him on Father’s Day.
5. Which of the following is TRUE about the author’s father?
A. He passed away due to a medical problem.
B. He was a pilot who received a military bonus.
C. He died in an air battle over Australia in 1942.
D. He left many precious memories for the author.
6. What does the author want to show by mentioning “the bonus of life” in Paragraph 6?
A. He feels grateful for every year he lives beyond his father’s age.
B. He regrets not receiving military benefits after his father’s death.
C. He believes his father’s life insurance provided financial security.
D. He thinks his mother deserved extra support from the government.
7. What is the main purpose of the author in writing this text?
A. To share his own experience of losing his father early.
B. To introduce his father’s life story during World War II.
C. To encourage readers to treasure time with their fathers.
D. To express his disappointment at not knowing his father.

In Chinese high schools, clubs are popular among students — they often focus on hobbies like calligraphy (书法), science experiments, or debate, and usually balance activity time with school studies. Many Chinese students join clubs to find out about interests outside textbooks, make friends with similar likes, and learn useful skills.
Similarly, American high schools have many kinds of clubs, and one of the most loved is the Drama Club. It’s more than just an extracurricular activity — it’s an active group where students can be creative, get confidence, and make good friends. Unlike some clubs that focus on specific (具体的) skills, the Drama Club isn’t only about putting on plays; it helps students grow in many ways, so lots of teens love joining it.
Each term, the club presents a big show. Open tryouts welcome everyone — no experience needed. A freshman might do a short speech for a small role, while a senior could land a lead in Romeo and Juliet. Those who prefer not to act build sets, make costumes, manage lights, or keep practices on track. Even shy students find their special job, like a second-year student discovering a love for painting backgrounds.
Practices run 3-4 afternoons weekly. Students practice lines until they sound natural, fix small problems, and support nervous peers (同龄人). Performance week is exciting: the school hall shines as families arrive with flowers. The audience takes a quick breath at sad moments, laughs at funny lines, and cheers loudly at the end — making all the hard work feel worth doing, with pride lasting for years.
Beyond fun, the club teaches valuable skills: speaking in front of people, managing time, and understanding how others feel when acting as characters. For many American high schoolers, it’s more than a club — it’s a second family, where they learn to try new things, help others, and discover new sides of themselves.
8. Why do many Chinese students join high school clubs?
A. To focus on textbook studies.
B. To explore the world out of class.
C. To prepare for entering the college.
D. To spend more time on extra activities.
9. What can we learn about the Drama Club in American high schools?
A. It mainly attracts shy students.
B. It needs rich experience to join.
C. It offers a job for every student.
D. It holds a big show every month.
10. How do students feel about their work in the Drama Club?
A. Valuable. B. Annoying. C. Challenging. D. Comfortable.
11. How does the American Drama Club help students?
A. By improving their living standards.
B. By developing their all-round skills.
C. By focusing on their physical health.
D. By providing better studying conditions.
D
Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause differences among students. There is a simple solution to this problem: school uniforms (校服).
I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of equality among peers (同龄人).
From sixth grade until I graduated from senior high school, I attended a school that required students to wear uniforms. The uniform was very simple: dark brown shoes, green-brown pants, and a white shirt. The uniform left little room for any kind of self-expression, especially through clothes.
However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself through my personality, art, and sports. I did not know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my musical abilities if it hadn’t been for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I wore.
Uniforms also contribute to a much safer learning environment. I remember a particular event that happened in my junior high school. A man ran away from prison and wanted to hide in the gym of our school. Luckily, cameras all over the school quickly found the stranger before any danger could ever happen as he was out of place. School officials kept the man locked inside our gym until the police came to take him back to prison.
Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or economic class (经济阶层). In closing, wearing uniforms is good for both schools and students.
12. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By explaining a basic rule. B. By challenging others’ views.
C. By describing a common problem. D. By sharing his parents’ experience.
13. Which of the following could the author agree with?
A. Uniforms are bad for self-development. B. Uniforms should be more modern.
C. Uniforms can help shape better students. D. Uniforms are popular with students.
14. What do the underlined words “out of place” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Standing straight. B. Running fast. C. Breathing heavily. D. Dressing differently.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce high school uniforms. B. To record his high school life.
C. To show his supportive view towards uniforms. D. To ask students to like what they wear.

Eager to go through it, I quickly took the book from the shelf and hurried to a chair nearby to read it. Suddenly, a terrible thing happened. One page was torn (撕破) by accident. It made me immediately nervous. “If the librarians (图书馆管理员) find I have made the book broken, they may ask me to buy a new one. And they may angrily blame (责备) me for my carelessness,” I thought.

Dear John,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling lonely. Don’t worry — many students find it hard to make friends at first. Here are some tips that might help.
First, try joining a school club, like the basketball or English club. It’s a great way to meet people who share your interests. Also, don’t be shy to say hello and smile. Most students are friendly and want to get to know you. You can also ask questions about their hobbies or life in China.
Remember, friendship takes time. I believe you’ll soon make good friends. If you need help, I’m here for you!
Best wishes,
Li Hua

Though reaching home safely, I felt uneasy (不安). Mom found there was something wrong with me and asked what had happened. After hearing my confession (坦白), she gently patted my shoulder and said, “Honesty is the best policy. The library is a shared space, and every reader should take responsibility for preserving the books. Let’s go back together to explain the situation and find a solution.” Her calm words made me realize that running away would only make things worse. So, with my mother’s encouragement, I decided to return to the library and face bravely.
When my mom and I arrived at the library, my heart raced (心跳加速) again. I slowly came to the librarian and told her about the torn page. To my surprise, she smiled and replied, “Thank you for your honesty. We appreciate readers who take responsibility. We can repair the book, and it’s a lesson for everyone to handle books with care.” Relieved, I learned that courage and honesty matter more than hiding mistakes. From that day on, I became a more careful reader and actively volunteered to help maintain library books.
