His another novel,The Nickel Boys, out July 16,follows two boys struggling through their sentences at an abusive reform school under the specter of segregation(种族隔离)in the 1960s.It's a book that will further cement his place in the list of influential American writers. He has written seven books of fiction and two books of nonfiction over a 20-year career. And even before The Underground Railroad,he had earned prizes and become a best seller.Explorations of race and history have been a through line from his early works—his first and second novels,The Intuitionist and John Henry Days—to the present. But Whitehead is unwilling to be boxed in by any school of thinking, any mode of creating. He has also written satire(讽刺文学)(Apex Hides the Hurt),zombie horror(Zone One)and a humorous non-fiction book on poker(The Noble Hustle),George Saunders,a popular contemporary, writes to TIME:“He is a splendidly talented writer, with more range than any other American novelist currently working—he can be funny, lyrical, satirical, earnest—whatever is needed by the work.” 语篇解读 本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一位才华横溢的作家怀特黑德以及他的小说。 24.Why does the author mention Oprah,President Obama and Barry Jenkins in the first paragraph? His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that.Hence this book,Chasing the Sea:Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea.It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way:Rustam, his translator,a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California,Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers. This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand,Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana,he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼) followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan,he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea. Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American,as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book,or even a piece of reportage.Whatever it is,the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions. 语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Tom Bissell写的一本关于咸海和他旅行经历的书。它是对乌兹别克斯坦人生活的快速观察。 28.What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan? The native environment for lionfish includes the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. However, sea experts say lionfish were at some time released into the Atlantic Ocean, likely by people who had kept them in tanks. Lionfish are currently considered a great threat to coral reefs(珊瑚礁) and related sea life in coastal waters of the southeastern US and Caribbean. Scientists say the fish is a top predator(食肉动物) that competes for food and space with native fish in the area.Lionfish kill off and eat many other kinds of fish that are important in helping coral reefs grow and stay healthy. Now there is a new solution for fighting back.University researchers are developing an underwater robot to hunt down, kill and collect lionfish. A student-led team in Massachusetts developed the robot. The robot is designed to recognize the lionfish, chase them and shoot them with a spear. The spear then separates from the robot and floats the fish to the surface for collection. The head of the university's Robotics Resource Center,Kenneth Stafford, said he was glad the development team was not afraid to take on such a serious environmental problem.“This is a real-world problem and the students attacked it,” he said. The team said one of the hardest parts of the project was designing a container for the robot's electronics system. It had to protect it from the harmful effects of saltwater. In the coming months, the team will be working to perfect the robot's satellite guidance system. The researchers hope that in addition to helping reduce reef damage, the system can also provide economic help. They say that since lionfish are a popular food item, fisherman could use the robots to safely catch the fish and sell them to local restaurants. 语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了狮子鱼以及一种可以捕捉狮子鱼以保护珊瑚礁的水下机器人。 32.What is the lionfish famous for? Recently,Elizabeth's team announced a special swim night:Members 11 and older would swim a timed 50 meters in all four strokes and then have pizza. It wasn't exactly a meet, because it would involve only team members.Elizabeth countered that it absolutely was a meet because there would be races and timers and so on.But her mother really wanted her to go.She fought back furiously but finally agreed. When the day of the special swim night arrived,Elizabeth was nervous. When she got to the pool with her parents, she became even more nervous. Her first race was the 50-meter freestyle. She swam her backstroke and breaststroke without incident. It wasn't fun for Elizabeth. Her butterflies just kept flapping. Then it was time for the T-shirt relay, which works like this:One person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt,a pair of socks, and a swim cap;swims 50 meters;and gets out of the pool. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap. For some unknown reason,Elizabeth's relay team chose her to swim the anchor leg(最后一棒).The team dressed her in socks and a T-shirt.And then she was off.She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than she did when she wasn't wearing them. Approaching the halfway mark, she was still in the lead. Then somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth's socks had fallen off and was floating in the pool.“She has to get that sock on before the end of the race,” a swimming official told Elizabeth's team,“or you will be disqualified.” 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。 Paragraph 1: Everybody on her team started screaming,“Elizabeth! Elizabeth! Stop! Get the sock!” Paragraph 2: By now,the girl in lane two was about to pass Elizabeth. [参考范文] Paragraph 1: Everybody on her team started screaming,“Elizabeth! Elizabeth! Stop! Get the sock!”But she couldn't hear them. One of her teammates jumped in the water, grabbed the sock, and threw it at Elizabeth. She still didn't notice.Meanwhile,a girl in lane two was gaining on Elizabeth. At this crucial moment,a girl on Elizabeth's team jumped in the pool, grabbed the sock, and swam after Elizabeth. She grabbed Elizabeth's foot.“You have to put the sock on,” the girl screamed.Elizabeth treaded water while her teammate put on the sock. Paragraph 2: By now,the girl in lane two was about to pass Elizabeth. With the sock finally on,Elizabeth swam her heart out for the last 15 meters. It was close. But finally Elizabeth beat the other girl to the wall for the victory.Wild cheers and loud applause erupted from the audience. Then came much celebration and joy for the members on Elizabeth's team. They hugged and laughed together as if they had won an Olympic event. And,for a few minutes,Elizabeth was the hero. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
