C.Free medical treatment is available at Sta- tion Street Hospital. D.There are more police officers on duty now. 23.The public notice is from A.the community B.the local government C.the Silver City Library D.a travel agency B I believe in the power of science fiction, not just for its capacity to transform dreams into real- ity,but also for its power to bond together those who share a common vision of the future. For me,that's true for my relationship with my dad. Some fathers and sons bond over sports, fishing or hunting, but my dad and I bond over Star Trek.We tried a trip to Disney World, but one of my earliest memories wasn't Mickey, but a Klin- gon battle cruiser(巡洋舰)on the screen. Over the years, nearly every setting and sit- uation has become far away for my dad and me. When it's warm at night,we're not driving along some dark streets in Indiana, but going at a slow speed with stars dimly shining. Both of us are thinking of them, without needing to say a word. All these visions of other universes have together created a private universe for my dad and me. Gene Rodenberry, creator of Star Trek, once said,"Science fiction is a way of thinking,a way of logic that bypasses(绕过)a lot of non sense. It allows people to look directly at impor- tant subjects."A lifetime of science fiction has influenced more than just my relationship with my dad,but has also helped me shape my own hopes for the future.I'm now a science writer. Yes,science fiction has made me into a “nerd”(书呆子),and it also has been a source of joy for my family, making me an optimist while enabling me to think critically about the danger of technology.Thank those authors who have shared their visions;the world and my family are better for it.Thank my dad,who is both the best storyteller and the best man I have ever known because he helped me realize the truth of Tennyson's words,"Since I dipped into the fu- ture,I saw the vision of the world, and all the wonders that would be. 24.What is the special bond between the author and his father? A.Their similar dreams. B.Their love for each other. C.Their common interest. D.Their hatred for science. 25.What does the author mainly show in para- graph 2? A.His deep impression on his dad. B.His feeling of staying with his dad. C.His earliest memory of his dad. D.His good relationship with his dad. 26.How does science fiction help the author at present? A.It leads him to pursue a desirable career. B.It brings him the courage to live better. C.It helps him solve the danger of technolo- gy. D.It makes him become a source of his family's joy. 27.What may be the best title for the text? A.The Wonders of Science B.The Power of Science Fiction C.The Versions of Science Fiction D.The Time together with My Father ·5 C It seems we can't get off the planet fast e- nough. Two thirds of NASA's money is spent on manned space exploration. We've seen all we can see on Earth, right?Wrong. The final place is here, under the surface of the sea. When we are heading down into the ocean, human limits are quickly reached. At a depth of 200 metres, the water is as black as a moonless night. Most nuclear submarines would implode before they reach 1 km down.At a depth of 3 km-still less than the average depth of the o- cean-there's a good chance that you'll discover a new species. The deepest-diving whales go no further. At the very bottom, about 11 km down, lies the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.Twelve hu- mans have walked on the Moon, but only three have seen the Challenger Deep with their own eyes. Yet things live down there.Big things.A very loud sound was once heard and scientists suggested that it was produced by an animal big- ger than a blue whale, the largest creature known on the planet. In the late 1990s,a deep-water submarine was dropped in the Southern Ocean, and passing 4,000 metres,it discovered something huge pass- ing under it.Surprised?Don't be.The ocean cov- ers 71%of the planet's surface and we've studied less than 5%of it.We know more about the dark side of the Moon than about the bottom of the sea. One reason that we explore space is to find evidence of other life forms. The search for life outside of Earth is important, but robots can look under the dry rock on Mars better than hu- mans. They're absolutely important for doing ocean research too,but they can't look under the sea.The cost of exploration is rising, but the re- sults would benefit all our lives. Perhaps now it's time to begin a new period of sea exploration.Manned exploration of space is science fiction. The adventure in the deep sea is a science fact. 28.What do the examples in Paragraph 2 sug- gest? A.Sea exploration is no easy task. B.Nuclear submarines need to be improved. C.The ocean is far deeper than people expec- ted. D.The condition under the sea is similar to that on the Moon. 29.What do we know about the Challenger Deep? A.Blue whales live there. B.No one has ever been there. C.People are terrified at the sight of it. D.It is the deepest known location in the ocean. 30.What does the author think of the discovery in the Southern Ocean? A.It's surprising. B.It's no wonder. C.It's worrying. D.It's no success. 31.What does the author want to tell us? A.Space exploration is of little value. B.We spend too much money on space travel. C.Humans'success lies in how much they ex- plore the sea. D.The ocean is the place where we should make our efforts. D The negative health impacts of plastic on both wildlife and humans have been well-docu- mented. However, plastics, which are used for everything from grocery bags to food packaging, are hard to avoid. Now,French start-up Carbios wants to solve the world's plastic pollution problem with a mu- tant bacterial enzyme()that digests PET-the most abundant polyester plastic(聚酯塑料)used to produce packaging and plastic bottles-and turns it into its chemical building blocks. The re- sulting material can be used to create anything and, more importantly, can be endlessly recycled. “Mechanical recycling is limited,”explains Carbios CEO Martin."After 6 or 7 cycles of recy- cling, the plastic might only be good enough to use for something like the plastic on the backing of a carpet, and eventually,it will have to be thrown away.So it's not a solution for the end of life of plastics, whereas our solution is an unlimit- ed recycling solution. The company's search for the best plastic- eating bacteria began about a decade ago, with 100,000 promising candidates. The list was soon reduced to one-a leaf compost bug.Once it had been identified,Carbios'scientists introduced mu- tations(突变).The new and improved enzyme was able to downgrade up to 90 percent of a ton of plastic in only 10 hours. To break down the plastic, the waste and the enzyme will be heated for 16 hours at 65C.The resulting mix is then purified. This allows for the recovery of the chemical building blocks and removes any addi- tives and colors that may be present. "This technique will certainly help reduce plastic pollution,Martin said."But we can only win the battle if people do a better job of ensu- ring plastic waste ends up in a recycling bin. ·5 32.What is special about the Carbios'recycling technique? A.It can reshape any plastic products. B.It can produce more polyester plastic. C.It makes plastic continuously recycled. D.It changes the system of food packaging. 33.What does the underlined word "candidates" in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.Plastic-eating bacteria. B.Negative effects on health. C.Chemical building blocks. D.French companies. 34.Why were mutations introduced? A.To purify the resulting mix. B.To remove additives and color. C.To keep the temperature at 65C. D.To improve plastic-digesting ability. 35.What is the author's purpose in writing the text? A.To record the development of Carbios. B.To introduce a plastic recycling technique. C.To persuade people to use fewer plastic products. D.To explain how to identify plastic-eating bacteria. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人 空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What will man be like in the future-in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now?We can only make guesses,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time. 36 Man,even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller.Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time,so we may assume that man will continue to grow tal- ler.Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal.Even so,we still make use of only a- bout 20%of the brain's capacity. As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too:the head,in particular the forehead, will grow larger. 37 In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand,we tend to make less use of our arms and legs.38 At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive be- cause they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably dis- appear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer.39 Perhaps all this gives the impression that fu- ture man will not be a very attractive creature to look at!40 All the same,in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in com- mon with us.He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own. A.This may well be true. B.Let us take an obvious example. C.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. D.These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. E.Now how exactly will this great revolution oc- cur? F.In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald. G.We're all set to get much taller and thinner,if we want to survive. 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项 中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。 This happened when I was ten.On a normal Sunday,I went to the barber shop where I al- ways went. That day, along with the barber there was an assistant, who had recently 41 the shop. Thanksgiving was two weeks away but I was already planning the menu.We always had din- ner at my house.I could always count on my son Bruce and his family who lived just an hour a- way.I was going over the grocery list again in my head when the phone rang.It was Bruce's wife, Elsa. She was calling to talk about Thanksgiving, but I couldn't believe what she was saying. 各题 “What do you mean you're not coming?”I said..“Not coming on Thanksgiving?” "We want you to be our guest this year,Elsa said."Eric will be home from college and Car- los is bringing his girlfriend.Of course Alex can't wait to see you. It'll be fun. 答 I was shocked, confused, and most of all hurt.Thanksgiving was always at my house. Obviously they didn't want any part of my Thanksgiving."I just won't come,I said, and 超 hung up.I tried to distract myself with housework, but it was no use.All I could think about was that all the years I'd worked to make the perfect Thanksgiving for my family. That night Bruce 巃 called. He sounded almost as angry as I was. "You're not being fair,Mom,he said."We want you here. You can help with the cooking. But it's time we started some of our own traditions.Don't spoil it for all of us.
