SILVER SPRING,MARYLAND—Students' involvement (参与) is a goal in schools everywhere.A teacher in the Washington suburbs has found a way to engage and motivate students—by bringing rhythm and fun to mathematics. The approach works well especially for students who speak English as a second language.
Making math fun
The voice heard in the video belongs to mathematics teacher Jake Scott. Most of the performers are his students.“I use rap because it is something that appeals to students, and also because music aids memory,” explains Scott.
Scott started using rap videos three years ago.So far he has produced nine, including Triangle Experts and Quadratic Formulatic, which have been viewed tens of thousands of times.“It is fun and the whole process is something that students appreciate,” says Scott.
More than a teacher
Blair High School principal Renay Johnson is a big supporter. She even appears in Scott's latest video,Undefined Expressions.
“Mr Scott is very motivating and engaging for students,” notes Johnson.“He enjoys what he does.As you know,he engages students and mathematics through music. But he is also our wrestling coach. He also sponsors the National Honor Society. And he is also a director of after-school sports academy.I am lucky to have him here as a teacher.”
Scott was recognized as an outstanding educator last year by the Montgomery County Council. He was also honored the year by an African-American civil rights organization.
Jake Scott says he wants mathematics to be something that students look forward to learning. And he says the results will help them on a path to colleges and careers.

I went to my first music festival with my friend this summer.Unlike the majority of festival-goers,we did not buy tickets.Instead,we volunteered as festival servers for Oxfam. We each worked in exchange for a free ticket to the festival.
Leeds Festival is a large music festival which takes place at Branham Park.It takes place towards the end of August, and thousands of people attend each year. There are several different stages, each suitable for a different music taste. As well as the great music on offer, there are also funfair rides, food outlets and a silent disco.Among these things,I love silent discos:everyone has a set of headphones with two channels and music is played through the headphones. As a result, people can be dancing and singing along to completely different songs!
When we were not working,we were free to enjoy the festival. We saw a wide variety of artists across the weekend. My favorite day was the Sunday—in my opinion, this had,by far,the best lineup (阵容).I really enjoyed seeing Imagine Dragons,Vampire Weekend and,of course,Arctic Monkeys, which are popular bands attracting thousands of people.
Although it was August,I could not believe how cold it was at night! We camped for five nights—a bit longer than the general public—and it was freezing every night! However,we had a really fantastic campsite.People who work at festivals stay in a different campsite to the general public. Our campsite was smaller, quieter and a lot cleaner! I had a great time and will definitely return next year!

Last Friday,a special thing took place at the National Theater of Korea.A robot called EveR 6 led an orchestra (管弦乐队) in a performance of Korean music.Robots have led orchestras in other countries, but this was the first time ever in Korea.
EveR 6 is a robot built by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH).It's about as tall as a person, and has a human-like face that can show feelings.EveR 6 has joints (关节) in its neck, shoulders, etc. As a result,it can move its arms quickly in many different directions.
But EveR 6 doesn't think on its own like some Artificial Intelligence programs.Instead,it has a limited group of movements that it has been trained to perform. To make these movements as natural as possible,EveR 6's movements are learnt from real human conductors.
When EveR 6 moved its baton (指挥棒) for the first time,a piece of music rang out.Every movement of the robot's arms brought more instruments into the mix,and the orchestra's music grew louder and more exciting.Mr White,a human conductor, was impressed with the way EveR 6 moved.“The robot was able to present such difficult moves much better than I had imagined,” he said.
But the robot still is not nearly ready to supersede a human conductor.Mr White says the robot's greatest weakness is that it can't hear.“Some people think that conducting is just about hand waving and keeping the beat,” says Mr White. But a good conductor needs to listen to the orchestra,so that he or she can correct and encourage the orchestra as it plays.
Mr White doesn't think robots are likely to replace human conductors. But he believes robots could be helpful in situations like practice parts where the same thing needs to be done many times.

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience.Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music.Experts led by Dr Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta,Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems.Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological (神经系统的) disorders hear a musical beat,it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear,it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians.Participants were asked to pass some listening tests.Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians,and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician,even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety.Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular(心血管的) system.
