Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other manage-
rial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age,a study published Wednesday in the
journal Neurology suggests.
如
Researchers from the University of Leipzig in Germany gathered more than 1,000 re-
tired workers who were over age 75 and assessed the volunteers'memory and thinking
skills through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years, the scientists asked the same group
的
to come back to the lab every 18 months to take the same sorts of tests.
Those who had held mentally stimulating ()demanding jobs before retirement
tended to do the best on the tests. And they tended to lose cognitive (function at a
much slower rate than those with the least mentally challenging jobs. The results held true
even after the scientists accounted for the participants'overall health status.
"This works just like physical exercise,"says Francisca Then, who led the study.
"After a long run,you may feel like you're in pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you
fit. After a long day at work-sure,you will feel tired, but it can help your brain stay
healthy.”
It's not just corporate jobs,or even paid work that can help keep your brain fit, then
points out.A waiter's job,for example,that requires multitasking,teamwork and deci-
sion-making could be just as stimulating as any high-level office work. And "running a
茵
family household requires high-level planning and coordinating(协调),”she says.“You
have to organize the activities of the children and take care of the bills and groceries."
Of course, our brains can decline as we grow older for lots of reasons-including oth-
er environmental influences or genetic factors.Still, continuing to challenge yourself men-
tally and keeping your mind busy can only help.
1.Why did the scientists ask the volunteers to take the tests?
A.To assess their health status.
B.To evaluate their work habits.
C.To analyze their personality.
D.To measure their mental ability.

2.How does Francisca Then explain her findings in Paragraph 4?
A.By using an expert's words.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By referring to another study.
D.By introducing a concept.

Many of us love July because it's the month when nature's berries and stone fruits are
in abundance. These colourful and sweet jewels from British Columbia's fields are little
powerhouses of nutritional protection.
Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C,although, because of
their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein(蛋白质),iron and zinc(not that
fruits have much protein).Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants(抗氧化物质).
The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into
vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries ()they are so delicious who
cares? However, they are rich in vitamin C.
When combined with berries or slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent
base for thick, cooling fruit shakes and low fat "ice cream".For this purpose, select ripe
bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter.Remove the skin and place them in plastic
bags or containers and freeze. If you like,a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas
will prevent them turning brown.Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on
their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer.
If you have a juicer, you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced
fruit.Out comes a "soft-serve"creamy dessert,to be eaten right away.This makes a fun
activity for a children's party;they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of
the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.
4.What does the author seem to like about cherries?
A.They contain protein.
B.They are high in vitamin A.
C.They have a pleasant taste.
D.They are rich in antioxidants.
5.Why is fresh lemon juice used in freezing bananas?
A.To make them smell better.
B.To keep their colour.
C.To speed up their ripening.
D.To improve their nutrition.
6.What is“a juicer'”in the last paragraph?
A.A dessert.
B.A drink.
C.A container.
D.A machine.
7.From which is the text probably taken?
A.A biology textbook.
B.A health magazine.
C.A research paper.
D.A travel brochure.

The DentalSlim Diet Control, developed by researchers at New Zealand's University of
Otago,is a device (fitted to patients'upper and lower back teeth that uses locks to
prevent them from properly opening their mouths and eating solid foods.
"It allows the wearers to open their mouths only about 2mm,forcing them to a liquid
diet, but it allows free speech and doesn't limit breathing,"the University of Otago said.
"Participants in a trial lost an average of 6.36kg in two weeks and were delighted to contin-
ue with their weight loss journey."
Professor Paul Brunton, lead researcher for the DentalSlim Diet Control, noted in the
same statement that the device is fitted by a dentist, and the device can be untied by the us-
er with a special tool in case of an emergency, and can be repeatedly fitted and removed. It
represents,in his words,“a reversible(可逆的),economical and attractive alternative to
operations”.“The fact is,”Professor Brunton said,.“there are no harmful consequences
with this device.”
Many disagreed.Within hours of the University of Otago announcing the device on
Twitter, many people called the device“evil"“hateful"and“disturbing”.Others pointed
out that hyperadiposity is often the product of complex factors including biology and social
disadvantages, and not something that can be solved by simply forcing people's mouths
shut.More than a handful described the DentalSlim Diet Control as a "dark device".
The University of Otago Twitter account has posted several tweets that sought to bet-
ter explain their position."To clarify, the intention of the device is not intended as a quick
or long-term weight-loss tool;rather it is aimed to assist people who need to take operations
and who cannot have the operation until they have lost weight. After two or three weeks
they can have the device removed. They could then have a period with a less limited diet
and then go back into treatment."This may also be the reason why they're calling it a
“world-first'”device..
The paper admitted that participants said they "occasionally had discomfort and felt
that life in general was less satisfying",but concluded that participants "tolerated the de-
vice for a two-week period with satisfactory weight loss".
8.How did the device achieve its purpose?
A.By being fitted to patients'teeth.
B.By allowing patients to speak more.
C.By locking patients'mouths totally.
D.By forcing patients to limit the foods.
9.What is the advantage of this device?
A.It's safe.
B.It's delicate.
C.It's professional.
D.It's environmentally friendly.
10.What does the underlined word "hyperadiposity"mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Being too weak.
B.Being too fat.
C.Being too poor.
D.Being too sad.
11.Who would accept this kind of device?
A.The people who want to gain weight.
B.The people who want to keep slim.
C.The people who are too heavy to take operations.
D.The people who can tolerate discomfort for a short time.

My husband jokes with me that my midlife crisis was having my now 11-year-old
daughter in my 40s.
I started my career as Associate Editor at Woman's World magazine in the late 1990s.
Then I was a magazine editor in-chief for five national consumer publications and also con-
tributed to magazines like Longevity and New Woman.
Four years after getting married in 2005,I eventually gave birth to my daughter,
Crystal. As I wrote on Parenting.com:"As the doctor checked her vital organs and my
husband counted her 10 perfect fingers and toes,I realised that my body had produced a
wonder.”
While my peers were dealing with the stresses of kids in school,I focused my creative
energy on carving out my new identity.I was excited when I was offered a "Mom's Talk"
column where I wrote about toys, breastfeeding, and my ongoing(追求)for“baby-free'”
time.
When Crystal was 3 years old,I wrote an essay about watching her dance at a toddler
(学步的小孩)reading group at the library, instead of sitting down with the other children.
I expected her performance to annoy people, but her joyful dancing attracted them and
made me consider my own possibilities.
"Had I ever been that way,I wondered.If so,could I be like that again?Could I be-
come as free as a child with her whole life ahead of her, ready and willing to be the star of
her own production?”
As my daughter transformed from a toddler into a young girl, she continued to be my
inspiration.I wrote about the new rules for babysitting and shared research showing that
fathers who participated in housework had a positive impact on their daughter's future suc-
cess on The Washington Post.
I focused on providing Crystal with resilience-building when she neared her teens.I
wrote about powerful phrases for The Week, like"no one is the judge of your self-worth".
As my daughter continues to grow during this messy time, there is one certainty:I will
continue to tell my stories, through the eyes of my midlife wisdom.I can't wait to see her
next chapter and for you to read mine.

The Little Girl Who Dared to Wish
As Amy Hagadorn rounded the corner across the hall from her classroom, she
knocked into a tall boy from the fifth grade running in the opposite direction.
“Watch it,squirt(矮子),”the boy yelled as he passed by the little third-grader.
Then, with a bad smile on his face, the boy took hold of his right leg and copied the way
Amy limped(跛行)when she walked.
Amy closed her eyes.Ignore him,she told herself as she headed for her classroom.
But at the end of the day,Amy was still thinking about the tall boy's mean teasing. It
wasn't as if he were the only one.It seemed that ever since Amy started the third grade,
someone teased her every single day.Kids teased her about her speech or her limping.
Amy was tired of it.
Back home at the dinner table that evening,Amy was quiet. Her mother knew that
things were not going well at school. That's why Patti Hagadorn was happy to have some
exciting news to share with her daughter.
"There's a Christmas wish contest on the radio station,"Amy's mom announced.
"Write a letter to Santa, and you might win a prize."
Amy giggled. The contest sounded like fun.She started thinking about what she wan-
ted most for Christmas.
A smile took hold of Amy when the idea first came to her.Out came pencil and paper,
and Amy went to work on her letter.
Dear Santa Claus,
