For the general public confused by the heated discussion on human cloning,A Clone
of Your Own?does an admirable job in explaining many of the ethical (and scien-
tific problems.Drawing from literature, the visual arts, films and her personal experi-
ences,Arlene Judith Klotzko has created an overview of cloning.
Klotzko tells us about the early experiments that Aristotle did with chicken embryos
()about a German scientist,Hans Spemann, who figured out the theory of cloning
some sixty years before we actually succeeded in cloning;about Dolly the sheep, the first
cloned mammal(哺乳动物)at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh;and about the current
successes and failures in attempts at cloning.
The book paints a picture of human cloning as a worthwhile job.Klotzko lists many
potential benefits that cloning could have. She also, following several others, makes clear
many of the common misunderstanding concerning cloning, and puts in plain words the
limited effect that genes have on shaping the kind of people we become.
A Clone of Your Own provides clear explanations of both the basic scientific and eth-
ical problems surrounding cloning.Klotzko appears to have drawn on a wide range of pub-
lished works on the ethics of cloning, and makes a large number of the arguments in the lit-
erature in this short book. However, readers who are unaware of the literature may be left
with the impression that Klotzko is the first and the only person to have written on the eth-
ics of cloning, which is far from the case.It is a pity that the author and the publisher have
provided so little reference to the ethics literature and given so little sign that they are
aware of it.Whether one's interest lies in the science or the ethics of cloning, the short list
of further reading provided at the end of the book is unhelpful and misleading.
But this warning aside, the drawings in this book and Klotzko's words make the book
highly approachable. The public who would like to understand what the debate on human
cloning is should read this book.
4.What does Klotzko tell us in A Clone of Your Own?

Not all bad emotions are necessarily bad.In fact, they can direct your behavior in use-
ful ways.If you're stuck in traffic, anger with the situation might motivate you to find an
alternative route, which will then relieve your stress. But anger is less useful if you're in
the same situation, but stuck on a motorway with no option to alter directions.
Emotions have physiological effects, such as raising the level of cortisol in your blood-
stream, which can affect your health.Indeed,a new study, published in Psychology and
Aging, shows that high levels of anger are associated with poor health in older people.
The Canadian study did the study on 226 adults aged 59-93.They took blood samples
to assess levels of chronic(慢性的)low-grade inflammation(炎症)and asked the partici-
pants to report any age-related chronic illnesses they might have. The participants also
completed a short questionnaire about the level of anger or sadness they experienced in
three typical days over a one-week period.
For the analysis, the researchers considered whether age could affect the results.
They found that higher levels of anger were associated with inflammation and ill health in
the oldest participants(aged 80 and above),but not the youngest ones (59-79 years).
Sadness was not associated with inflammation or ill health in either age group.
The study is cross-sectional,meaning that it assessed a group of people at a single
point in time.To get a fuller understanding of the relationship between bad emotions and
health,we need studies that follow participants for a period of time-so-called prospective
observation studies.Future studies should also take into account other factors that might
relate, such as other emotions, stress and personality.
Although this new research shows a link between emotion and health in older age,we
do not know whether anger causes inflammation and illness or whether health problems
make people angrier.
8.What does the underlined word "alter"in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Change.
B.Control.
C.Measure.
D.Operate.
9.Why were participants taken blood samples?
A.To analyze their levels of health.
B.To fill in the form of questionnaires.
C.To know the levels of some inflammation.
D.To compare the change of anger in three days.
UNIT9·B卷第3页(共8页)
10.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Anger is the greatest danger to health.
B.The influence of anger on illness is unclear.
C.People in poor health are easy to get angry.
D.Evidence is needed to prove the effect of health.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Adjusting Our Emotions Is Necessary
B.Bad Emotions Affect People's Feelings
C.New Conclusions Make People Amazed
D.Anger Is Linked to Illness in Old Age

We all have our own tricks to cheer up when we're feeling down;these little tricks can
make you feel a little bit happier every day. While there are certainly happy memories tied
up in the wedding ring you and your spouse (purchased together years ago or your
teddy bear from childhood, new research finds that we typically feel calmer and experience
a greater sense of well-being when we focus on a place that reminds us of happier times
rather than a thing, even if it holds great value.
The report, called Places That Make Us,was conducted by National Trust's and Sur-
rey University's researchers.Experts performed functional magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI)(磁共振成像)scans on20 volunteers and conducted an online survey of2,O00peo
ple to better understand this deep draw toward special places.
"Working with leading researchers and academics, and using cutting-edge MRI brain
technology,we examined how places affect people, how they become special, and why we
feel a pull towards them,"explained Nino Strachey, head of research for the National
Trust.
The 20 volunteers were shown images of landscapes, houses, and other locations,as
well as personally meaningful objects.Measuring their brain activity, the researchers
found that it was the places,as opposed to the objects, that caused the brain to get the
most excited.
Volunteers were also interviewed at great length two times, once at home and the oth-
er time at their special place. The research made discoveries that we had never known be-
fore-the favorite places awoke feelings of belonging, physical and emotional safety, and
an intense internal pull to the place.
Dr.Andy Myers weighed in on the research, saying,"For the first time we have been
able to prove the physical and emotional benefits of places, far beyond any research that
has been done before..”
12.How was the research conducted?
A.By performing MRI on 2,000 volunteers.
B.By measuring the participants'brain by MRI.
C.By doing rough interviews with the participants.
D.By showing meaningful objects to the participants.

Everyone is aware that taking good care of our bodies can prevent many medical prob-
lems from occurring later. However,we often have less awareness of preventative actions
we should take to help with mental health problems. While our mental health may be fine
right now, many of us will struggle at some point.16 It's impossible to get
through life without challenges, but our mental health prevention habits can help us get
through difficult times.17
Keep active. The more active you physically, mentally and socially are,the higher the
level of your mental wellness is likely to be.So go for walks and learn something new.
There are many other ways to be active.18
Be connected.Regular involvement in social activities with supportive friends and fami-
ly improves your ability to handle disappointments, and everything else life throws at you.
19
But you can be involved in any manner;even volunteering for an organization
can help you be more social.
20 The nature of these activities varies widely from person to person. The key
is to identify what gives your life meaning.Volunteering,coaching,teaching,etc.all can
contribute to increasing your sense of confidence and satisfaction with life. Many activities
can address more than one.The key is to make a plan and stick with it.If you are already
struggling, begin to practice these ways to help your recovery.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
We already know that the underwater world is anything but silent. It is full of natural
sounds produced by animals and by the motion of the atmosphere and water. But today's re-
searchers are increasingly concerned about the man-made noises under the water. They are
confusing-and even killing-fish,whales and other marine animals.
Although hearing is important to all animals, the special qualities of the undersea
world emphasize the use of sound.Underwater sound allows marine animals to gather infor-
mation and communicate at great distances and from all directions.Loud underwater noises
can cause damage to their hearing. And nowadays it's becoming too much for marine wild-
life.Evidence shows that whales will swim hundreds of miles, rapidly change their depth,
等
and even beach themselves to get away from the sounds of sonar.
You might think lower noises, typically caused by shipping or construction,do not
pose a threat to marine animals. In fact, while they may not kill the animals directly, they
can disturb their ability to locate food,.find mates and avoid predators(掠食动物).Scien-
tists looked at the effects of noise from small motorboats on coral-reef fish at the Great
Barrier Reef in Australia. In the lab,the fish had been trained to recognize the smell of
three common predators as a threat. Some fish were trained in the presence of boat noise,
while the others had training with the natural sounds of the ocean. It turned out that the
first group showed no fright reactions when exposed to the predator. However, the other
group was scared. And under the influence of underwater noise on this group, only 20 per-
cent of fish survived, compared to almost 70 percent of unexposed fish.
Humans rely on the ocean for its natural resources and biodiversity. The ocean also
plays an important role in regulating (temperatures. As Cousteau said,"For most of
history, man has had to fight nature to survive;in this century he is beginning to realize
that,in order to survive,he must protect it."
