Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7,000 or so languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.
Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害), with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.
“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy Language Unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalisation and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. “It seems particularly cruel,” she says, “that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189 km², has more than 100 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise,” she says. Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.
In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. “Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is not only important for them, but for all humanity,” said Csaba Korosi, the UN former general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.
4. What does the underlined phrase “final nail in the coffin” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. The last straw. B. The last challenge.
C. The last possibility. D. The last opportunity.
5. Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To explain the main reason for language density.
B. To show the common features of endangered languages.
C. To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.
D. To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.
6. What did the International Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do?
A. To support migrants to access local education.
B. To discourage people from massive migration.
C. To improve the living conditions of minority groups.
D. To preserve the languages of indigenous communities.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Faced With Disasters: Communities Have to Leave
B. Lost for Words: Climate Crisis Brings Threat of Catastrophe
C. Upset at Extinction: the UN Urges International Cooperation
D. Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis

In the 13th century Marco Polo, the world known Italian traveller, saw many wonderful things in China. One of the things he discovered was money made of paper. People in the West did not have such kind of money until the 15th century. However, the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century.
Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2,000 years ago, but it was not made in Europe until the year 1100. Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that, countries rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America and Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
Paper can be used in many ways. The common uses include newspapers magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated (使绝缘) from heat or cold with paper.
However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth some day in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2, 800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting down nearly 48,000 trees every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.
So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some
In short, we should keep a balance (平衡) between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.
8. When did the Chinese begin to use paper money?
A. In the 5th century. B. In the 6th century.
C. In the 7th century. D. In the 15th century.
9. Why did Canada become an important country in paper making?
A. Because it was a large country. B. Because it had lots of forests.
C. Because it was a very rich country. D. Because the inventor was from Canada.
10. In Finland, paper is used for .
A. making beds B. reducing waste
C. making umbrellas D. keeping warm
11. According to the passage, how many trees are needed to make one ton of paper?
A. 10. B. 17. C. 2,800. D. 48,000.
D
On September 8, Morocco was hit by one of its worst earthquakes on record, destroying entire villages and killing over 3,000 people. I interviewed a woman who lived through the earthquake.
Thérèse Sara Delannay’s house in Marrakesh initially appeared undamaged after the earthquake which rocked the city and the southwest of the country. Still, the Swiss national, who moved to Morocco after retiring, soon began to notice cracks forming in the walls. Her Moroccan-style guest house is situated in the heart of the city, just minutes from the old town.
Delannay vividly remembers the onset of the earthquake: “I was preparing for bed when I felt a shake and heard a deafening sound, like a plane approaching,” she said. “But it came from the ground, not the sky. The house shook violently, as if being uprooted from the earth.”
As her house trembled that night, she immediately checked the stairs to see if she could safely exit. “I found my neighbours doing the same,” she recalled. “We all gathered in an open square near a school.” Delannay and her neighbours, as well as many other residents in the area, spent the night outside, too fearful of aftershocks to return home, thankful at least for the warm weather.
On the narrow street, the vibrations (震动) from passing cars often caused house windows and hanging lanterns to shake. With every aftershock following the extremely destructive earthquake, Delannay was constantly worried, questioning each vibration: “Is this from a car, or another aftershock?”
Delannay returned to her house the morning after the earthquake to assess the damage and got in touch with her guests traveling in other parts of Morocco. She advised them to stay where they were and not risk returning to Marrakesh, where aftershocks were still possible.
12. What did Delannay do first after realizing it was an earthquake?
A. She hid herself in a corner. B. She called her neighbours.
C. She looked out of the windows. D. She checked the way out.
13. What made Delannay feel lucky after the earthquake?
A. The warm weather. B. The open square.
C. The narrow street. D. The neighbours around.
14. What did Delannay probably say to her guests traveling out?
A. Don’t spend the night outside.
B. Don’t stay in Morocco any longer.
C. Don’t come back for the time being.
D. Don’t be too far away from Marrakesh.
15. What’s the author of this text probably?
A. A doctor. B. A reporter.
C A geographer. D. An earthquake survivor.

Caring for Animals Without Owning a Pet
Caring for animals is hugely rewarding and offers all sorts of benefits - the calming effect of being with the creatures the sense of responsibility and, of course, the chance to enjoy a comforting hug. ___16___This isn’t necessarily a barrier, though. Why not consider the following alternatives to harvest the rewards of their company?
●Help wild animals in your area.
Are there birds that visit a garden nearby? Is there a squirrel storing food in a bush or a hedgehog (刺猬)wandering across a local footpath? If you do spot an animal, put appropriate food and make a necessary nest for it, but never overdo something. ___17___
●Become a dog walker to get closer to animals.
___18___ It’ll give you a chance to enjoy non-human company while also getting in extra walking time. Ask a neighbour or relative if you can join them in their dog walk. Can’t think of anyone with a dog that needs an outing? No problem. There are websites and organizations that enable users to “borrow a dog", matching owners with people who can look after and entertain their pet while they 're away.
● ___19___
If you prefer four-legged friends, but don't have room for a pony or cow in the backyard, don’t despair. Some farms, including city farms, run youth volunteer programmes or school holiday plans. ___20___ There’ll probably be a lot of dull work, like cleaning out stables, but in return, you’ll get hands-on experience, meet like-minded people and gain general skills, such as teamwork.

B. Take up animal-related volunteer work.
C. Get paid by caring for animals on a farm.
D. Nurturing them follows their natural daily patterns.

【导语】本文这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了气候危机加剧了语言的消失,解释了语言消失背后的种种原因以及联合国对土著语言的保护措施。
【4题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词前文“Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害), with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct.(少数民族语言使用者经历了漫长的历史性迫害。结果到20世纪20年代,澳大利亚、美国、南非和阿根廷境内一半的本土语言都已消亡)”介绍了土著语言消亡的情况,因此推断画线短语所在句也在讲对土著语言的影响,说明气候危机现在被看作是对许多土著语言和相关知识的致命一击。final nail in the coffin与A项“最后一根稻草;最后一击”意思相近。故选A。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189 km², has more than 100 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise,” she says. Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.(瓦努阿图是南太平洋的一个岛国,面积达12189平方公里,拥有超过100种语言,是地球上语言种类最丰富的国家之一。该国也是受海平面上升影响最大的国家之一。她说:“许多小型语言群体居住在容易遭受飓风和海平面上升影响的岛屿和海岸线上。”还有一些人生活在气温上升威胁到传统农业和渔业活动的地区,从而导致了人口迁移)”可推知,第三段提到瓦努阿图是为了说明少数民族语言社区的情况。故选D。
【6题详解】

【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7,000 or so languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.(每40天就有一种语言消亡。据语言学家称,这种“灾难性的”语言流失正因气候危机而加剧。如果不采取任何措施,保守估计显示,目前仍在使用的约7000种语言中,有一半将在本世纪末消失)”可知,文章主要说明了气候危机加剧了语言的消失,解释了语言消失背后的种种原因以及联合国对土著语言的保护措施。B选项“语言消失:气候危机带来灾难性威胁”最符合文章标题。故选B。
C
A. 10. B. 17. C. 2,800. D. 48,000.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. B

A. A doctor. B. A reporter.
C. A geographer. D. An earthquake survivor.
