When you think about your relationship with your parents, how would you describe it? Are you satisfied with it, or would you wish for something more? For many, the relationship with their parents is not perfect, and it may even feel distant (疏远的).
I once hoped that my parents would be my best friends—people I could talk to openly, share my thoughts with, and have meaningful discussions with. However, the reality was very different. Our relationship was often filled with shouting and misunderstandings. We hardly had calm, meaningful conversations. Instead, there were months when we didn’t talk at all because there was nothing to say.
For many years, from my teenage years to my late twenties, this was my reality. But things began to change when I decided to make an effort (努力) to improve the relationship. Now, at 30, my relationship with my parents has improved greatly. We communicate openly, without anger, and show concern for each other in a way that feels natural.
Improving the relationship with your parents takes time. It is not a quick fix. When I first started, my efforts and apology(道歉) seemed pointless. For example, when I tried to hold my mom into my arms, she pushed me away. My dad didn’t give me a love sign. But I didn’t give up. I realized that improving a relationship is not about fixing a single argument; it’s about repairing years of misunderstandings and miscommunications.
To truly improve your relationship with your parents, understand that it’s a long journey. It will not happen overnight, and you may not see results immediately. In my case, it took years of efforts. I had to show my parents that I had changed, not through words, but through actions. They slowly began to react (做出回应), but the process was slow and required patience.
So, if you’re facing problems with your parents, remember that it’s normal. Start by seeing the situation as a long journey. It may not be easy, but if you keep trying and give it time, your relationship can get better. Be patient and stick to the process.
24. What was the author’s early relationship with her parents like?
A. Terrible. B. Peaceful. C. Special. D. Close.
25. How did the author’s parents first react to her efforts?
A. They accepted them warmly. B. They paid little attention to them.
C. They were surprised and moved. D. They apologized for their misunderstandings.
26. What may the author consider most important in improving the parent-child relationship?
A. Making apologies. B. Open conversations.
C. Understanding each other. D. Long-term efforts and patience.
27. Why does the author write the text?
A. To look back on the past. B. To give thanks to her parents.
C To offer suggestions to others. D. To describe a common social problem.

There are few writers who have had such an impact on the thinking of the modern world as British writer George Orwell Orwell wrote many things on a variety of topics, for example, poverty in England in the 1930s during the Great Depression and his experience in the Spanish Civil War (1936 —1939).
But he is most famous for his works of fiction Animal Farm (1945) and, especially, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). These last books became especially influential in the West in the 1950s during the early Cold War years.
In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell imagined a Britain of the future, modeled on the Soviet Union. His terrible story of Winston Smith, a regular man who comes into conflict with the government, was close to the fears of many people of the time. Ideas from the novel soon entered everyday culture, and are still in use today. “Big Brother”, for example, is a phrase from the book that refers to how authority (权威) is always looking over one’s shoulder.
Other phrases used in the novel, like “War is Peace” and “Freedom is slavery” are also still used now. Indeed, many people see Orwell’s book as warnings about what might happen if those in power become corrupted (腐败).
Even today, Orwell remains an influential voice. Often, writers achieve great fame and popularity, but they don’t affect how people live their everyday lives. For example, British author J.K. Rowling is a huge literary success, but people wouldn’t say that Harry Potter has affected the way people think about politics. For better or for worse, however, George Orwell has.
It’s because of Orwell’s influence on popular thinking that UNESCO’S Memory of the World Programme recently decided to include a collection of Orwell’s writings on its register.
The Memory of the World register is similar to UNESCO’s world heritage site program, which protects places and buildings and natural features in the world. According to its website, the idea behind the body is that “the world’s documentary evidence belongs to all” and should be “permanently accessible to all” .
University College London, which proposed the idea to UNESCO, said in its application that Orwell’s work “had a great influence on human thought in all parts of the world, an influence that remains potent today”.
28. Which of the following statements about George Orwell is true?
A. His books were all well-received during the late Cold War.
B. He mainly wrote about imaginative, beautiful worlds.
C. His writings are often compared to those of O. Henry.
D. He’s had a lasting influence on human thought than most of the writers.
29. The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four is about ________.
A. the serious effects of poverty in England
B. the cruelty of war in the 20th century
C. a corrupt UK government of the future
D. people’s various conflicts with the government
30. The phrases from Orwell’s books are mentioned in the article mainly to ________.
A. show how he described the dark side of society
B. stress his ideas are still meaningful today
C. show how he used language in a creative way
D. share some of his classic ideas
31. What does the underlined word “potent” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Powerful. B. Practical. C. Pleasant. D. Polite.

Unlike relay (接力) runners who pass a stick in one direction, businessmen traveling the Silk Road moved goods like silk, gold, fruit, and glass in various directions. This famous trade route (路线) was where they earned their living.
Far more than a simple trading network, the Silk Road passed through thousands of cities and towns. It started from eastern China, across Central Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea. It was used from about 200 BC to about AD 1300, when sea travel offered new routes, providing more convenience. It was sometimes called the world’s longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only experienced traders could return safe.
The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product. Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. However, the Silk Road facilitated (促进) the exchange of many other significant goods. European gold, silver, and glass reached the Middle East and Asia, while horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China. Indian businessmen traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese businessmen traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West. Apples traveled from central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft (嫁接) different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this science on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple. Trading along the Silk Road led to world-wide business 2,000 years before the World Wide Web.
The people along the Silk Road did not share just goods. They also shared their beliefs. The Silk Road provided pathways for learning, diplomacy (外交), and religion (宗教).
32. The Silk Road became less important because ________.
A. people needed fewer foreign goods B. sea travel provided easier routes
C. silk trading became less popular D. it was made up of various routes
33. It’s probable that traders along the Silk Road needed ________.
A. to deal with a lot of difficulties B. to receive certain special training
C. to know the making of products D. to remember the entire trade route
34. New technologies could travel along the Silk Road because people ________.
A. traded goods along the route B. earned their living by traveling
C. learned from one another D. shared each other’s beliefs
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Silk Road: Routes Full of Dangers B. The Silk Road: Pathways for Learning
C. The Silk Road: Past and Present D. The Silk Road: East Meets West

C. To offer suggestions to others. D. To describe a common social problem.
A 25. B 26. D 27. C
根据第二段的“Our relationship was often filled with shouting and misunderstandings. We hardly had calm, meaningful conversations. Instead, there were months when we didn’t talk at all because there was nothing to say.(我们的关系常常充斥着争吵和误解。我们几乎没有进行过平和且有意义的交流。相反,有好几个月我们甚至完全不说话,因为根本没有什么可说的了)”可知,作者早年与父母的关系充满争吵、误解,甚至长期不沟通,这是糟糕的。故选A。
根据第四段的“When I first started, my efforts and apology(道歉) seemed pointless. For example, when I tried to hold my mom into my arms, she pushed me away. My dad didn’t give me a love sign.(刚开始的时候,我的努力和道歉似乎都毫无意义。比如,当我试图把妈妈抱进怀里时,她却把我推开。而我的父亲也没有给我任何爱的暗示)”可知,作者最初努力改善关系时,父母对她的努力不重视。故选B。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段的“In my case, it took years of efforts. I had to show my parents that I had changed, not through words, but through actions.(就我而言,这需要多年的努力。我必须向父母证明我已经有所改变,不是通过言语,而是通过实际行动来体现)”及最后一段“Start by seeing the situation as a long journey. It may not be easy, but if you keep trying and give it time, your relationship can get better. Be patient and stick to the process.(首先将这种状况视为一段漫长的旅程。
C
There are few writers who have had such an impact on the thinking of the modern world as British writer George Orwell Orwell wrote many things on a variety of topics, for example, poverty in England in the 1930s during the Great Depression and his experience in the Spanish Civil War (1936 —1939).
But he is most famous for his works of fiction, Animal Farm (1945) and, especially, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).
A. Powerful. B. Practical. C. Pleasant. D. Polite.
D 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第一段中的“There are few writers who have had such an impact on the thinking of the modern world as British writer George Orwell (乔治·奥威尔) (1903—1950). (很少有作家能像英国作家乔治·奥威尔(1903-1950)那样对现代世界的思想产生如此大的影响。)”可知,他对人类思想的持久影响超过了大多数作家。故选D项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell imagined a Britain of the future, modeled on the Soviet Union. His terrible story of Winston Smith, a regular man who comes into conflict with the government, was close to the fears of many people of the time. (在《一九八四》中,奥威尔以苏联为蓝本,构想了一个未来的英国。他讲述的普通人温斯顿·史密斯与政府发生冲突的可怕故事,贴近当时许多人的担忧。)”以及第四段中的“Indeed, many people see Orwell’s book as warnings about what might happen if those in power become corrupted (腐败). (的确,许多人认为奥威尔的书是对当权者腐败可能发生的情况的警告。)”可知,《一九八四》讲述的是未来腐败的英国政府。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Ideas from the novel soon entered everyday culture, and are still in use today. “Big Brother”, for example, is a phrase from the book that refers to how authority (权威) is always looking over one’s shoulder. (小说中的观点很快进入了日常文化,至今仍在使用。例如,“老大哥”这个词就来自这本书,指的是权威总是在背后监视着你。)”以及第四段中的“Other phrases used in the novel, like “War is Peace” and “Freedom is slavery” are also still used now. (小说中使用的其他短语,如“战争即和平”和“自由即奴役”,至今仍在使用。)”可知,文中提到奥威尔书中的短语主要是为了强调他的思想在今天仍然有意义。故选B项。
【31题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“Even today, Orwell remains an influential voice. (即使在今天,奥威尔仍然是一个有影响力的声音。)”以及前文多次强调奥威尔作品的持久影响力可知,此处“an influence that remains potent today”指的是这种影响至今仍然强大。所以potent意为“强大的”,与powerful同义。故选A项。
D
C to know the making of products D. to remember the entire trade route
34. New technologies could travel along the Silk Road because people ________.
A. traded goods along the route B. earned their living by traveling
C. learned from one another D. shared each other’s beliefs
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Silk Road: Routes Full of Dangers B. The Silk Road: Pathways for Learning
C. The Silk Road: Past and Present D. The Silk Road: East Meets West
B 33. A 34. C 35. D
