Like many high school students, Dio is a 15-year-old sports and music lover. However, unlike many others his age, Dio has faced-and conquered-unthinkable health challenges over the past year. It’s hard to believe he couldn’t speak or walk less than a year ago.
Dio, then a freshman in high school, went from daily sports practices to being unable to open his right hand. Dio’s mother took him to hospital, where they received shocking and frightening news: Dio had a brain tumor (瘤). Within three days, he received a successful 13-hour operation. But while recovering in hospital, Dio had a stroke (中风), which left him unable to feel or use the right side of his body and unable to communicate. “I was faced with a really big mountain to climb, but I was determined to make it through,” shares Dio.
He stayed in hospital to receive physical, speech and language therapy (治疗). Before his stroke, Dio had taught himself to play both the piano and guitar and listened to music any chance he could. Blake French, Dio’s Speech therapist, had read several research studies on the benefits of music for patients. So, once she learned that singing and music were areas of strength for Dio, she regularly applied it to the therapy. Together, Dio and Blake sang familiar songs, one word at a time. Music helped Dio communicate so much better, and helped him recover his confidence. Months later, Dio was allowed to go back to school.
Although he cannot play sports anymore now he still plays the guitar and piano. “Music has enabled me to talk normally again. It got me over a really big mountain I was determined to climb,” shares Dio. “And now that I’m past it, I’m even more positive and confident.”
20. What happened to Dio when he was a high school freshman?
A. He faced serious health issues. B. He had a stroke before the operation.
C. He received a heart operation. D. He was hurt in a daily sports practice.
21. Why did Blake sing songs with Dio?
A. To communicate better. B. To use the power of music.
C. To become more confident. D. To share her love for music.
22. What can be used to describe Dio?
A. Humorous and athletic. B. Patient and determined.
C Easy-going and organised. D. Strong-willed and positive.
23. What does Dio’s experience suggest?
A. Music bridges the gap between people. B. Music makes education more successful.
C. Music is the medicine of a troubled mind. D. Music is the language of all human beings.

When it comes to being fit and healthy, we're often reminded to aim to walk 10,000 steps per day. This can be a frustrating target to achieve, especially when we're busy with work and other commitments.
The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called "Manpo---kei, which translates to "10,000 steps meter". This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. It's even included in daily activity targets by popular smart-watches, such as Fitbit.
In ancient Rome, distances were actually measured by counting steps. In fact, the word "mile" originated from the Latin phrase mila passum, which means about 2,000 steps. It's suggested the average person walks about 100 steps per minute---which would mean it would take a little under 20 minutes for the average person to walk a mile. So in order for someone to reach the 10,000---step goal, they would need to walk about five miles a day, nearly two hours of activity.
Researchers have investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. The fact that some studies have shown this step target improves heart health, mental health, and even lowers diabetes risk, may, to some extent, explain why we have stuck with this arbitrary number.
But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, approximately 4,400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Although it's uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it's one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death.
24. From which does taking 10,000 steps for walkers initially come?
A. Ancient Rome. B. Fitbit.
C. Mila passum. D. Manpo-kei.
25. How many steps will you take on average to cover two miles?
A. 2000. B. 2700.
C. 4000. D. 7500.
26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The more you walk daily, the healthier you will be.
B. 7,500 steps or so a day is the ideal number for women.
C. To be healthy you'd better walk ten thousand steps.
D. The number of effective steps is the same for men and women.
27. What does the underlined phrase "leveling off" refer to?
A. Remaining steady. B. Increasing greatly.
C. Decreasing sharply. D. Disappearing suddenly.
D
If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again.
It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than ‘by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science & Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical society.
In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.
The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.
“Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said. Shahmohammadi.
The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.
The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks & clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.
28. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the new report?
A. To recommend a strange shopping habit. B. To introduce a respected scientific journal.
C. So analyze online shopping. D. To prove the advantage of offline shopping.
29. What does the underlined word “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Combine. B. Produce. C. Divide. D. Check.
30. What can we learn about “the last mile” delivery?
A. It is designer by the research team.
B. It is managed by the factories.
C. It causes high greenhouse gas emissions.
D. It influences the total greenhouse gas footprints.
31. According to the analysis, which is probably the most eco-friendly way to shop?
A. Buying at physical stores. B. Buying from bricks & clicks.
C Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time.
How would you feel if you were sharing a personal story and noticed that your friend wasn't really listening? You probably wouldn’t be too excited. Without active listening, people often feel unheard and unacknowledged. ___32___
Listen without making judgements. Most people tend to judge others during conversations. ___33___ If you let your opinions come into play, they may ruin the conversation. However, if you enter a discussion with the goal of understanding someone else's opinion, they will want to have deeper discussions with you.
___34___ Physically showing that you’re listening doesn’t come naturally for everybody. But if someone is ready to open up to you, and you sit back with your arms crossed without saying a word, they’re not going to say much. To encourage someone to keep talking, focus on the speaker by turning your head and body to face them and by making eye contact.
Ask questions. Asking questions is one of the best ways to show you're interested. If someone is telling you about their ski trip, don’t respond with “That’s nice.” ___35___ Instead, you can ask, “How long have you been skiing?” or “What was your favorite part of the trip?” The person will think highly of you because you have asked a few questions.
Think before responding. After the speaker has finished talking, a good listener may take some time before responding. Simply take a few seconds to think or say, “Give me a second to think about that.” Doing so either makes the speaker first feel you’re listening to what they’re saying. ___36___ In this way, it will make the speaker feel comfortable as they see you processing what they've said.
A. Use positive body language.
B. Pay attention to the speaker’s judgement
C. That would show a lack of interest and disrespect.
D. Give the speaker a chance to correct your understanding.
E. But judging isn’t helpful when you’re having a conversation.
F. Then they will know you want to be thoughtful in your response.
G. That’s why it’s important for everyone to learn how to be a better listener.

Directions: After reading the passages below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
It happened all too quickly when I leaned over to reach for the ring Miss Allan demanded. My sleeve caught on the corner of the tray of solitaires The tray teetered. I grabbed at it and six magnificent diamond rings went ____52____ (roll) across the floor.
Down on my knees, I said through my tears, “Oh, Mr. McCallum, Miss Allan is waiting! What will I do?”
“I ____53____ (see) to Miss Allan myself,” he said. “Just pick up those rings!”
With frantic speed I collected five rings and put them in their slots. I couldn’t find the sixth and thought it ____54____ have slipped through the tiny opening between the showcase and the window. I ran around the counter and looked down. It wasn’t there. ____55____ the corner of my eye I saw a tall man edging toward the door of the shop a few yards away. To drop a tray of rings was bad, but that would be forgiven. ____57____ (lose) one was unthinkable. And yet if I made a fuss — ____58____ I turned out to be right about this man — it could well be the end of all my hopes.
“What do you want?” he said, and I saw the muscles of his cheeks twitch.

I knew ____60____ it felt like to look for work and find none, and could imagine the bitterness of a man seeing others still able to buy luxuries while he and his family went short of necessities.
“What do you want?” he repeated. Suddenly I had the answer. Mother had always told me poor people were basically kind. I didn’t think this man would want to hurt me. I looked out into the fog that was swirling outside. “This is my first job” I said. “Jobs are scarce now, aren’t they?”
He searched my face intently, then smiled a very gentle smile, “Yes”, he said. “Indeed they are. But I’m sure you’ll do very well in yours. May I wish you luck?”
He put his hand out and grasped ____61____. “Good luck to you,” I whispered as he opened the door and vanished in the fog. Then I turned and put the sixth diamond back into place.

Friend or Foe?
Last year, at day camp, my friend Ollie and I were on the same obstacle- course (障碍赛) team and had a great time. This year, Scotty, the captain of Team Panda, insisted we pick sticks to decide which team we belonged to.
At the beginning, we just wished we’d be on the same team again. But to our disappointment, Ollie had picked a short stick for Team Grizzly, while I had a long stick for Team Panda. My heart sank as something were definitely going to be different.
We all played a name game together, and then were divided into two groups to make team flags. “Could you please pass that paint?” asked a boy named Ben, “We’re going to destroy the Grizzlies! Right, Arizona?”
“But Ollie, my best friend, is in Grizzly. How come I destroy him?”I asked myself shyly.
Then at lunchtime, I planned to sit with Ollie at the same table as last year, cracking each other up the way good friends do. “What are you doing? Having lunch with our enemy is not OK!!!” claimed a girl in my team. Only then did I realize there was an invisible dividing line. All of the Grizzlies sat together, and all of the Pandas sat together. I had no other alternative but to say goodbye to Ollie and concentrate on my lunch.
That night I hardly fell asleep. Ben’s voice was saying “ Destroy the Grizzlies!” on repeat. I was wondering if being a good team member meant I was supposed to put my friendship with Ollie aside. One of my best friends was a Grizzly, and it just didn’t seem fun to treat him as an enemy.
I woke up with zero energy for our first competition the next morning. We each had two tries to race through an obstacle course. My first try was a disaster! I did OK with the monkey bars, the tunnel, and the slide. But when I did the rope swing over the sandpit(沙坑), I went too slow and got stuck in the middle. I felt pretty frustrated.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
When 1 finished the course, Ollie came over.

Although he cannot play sports anymore now, he still plays the guitar and piano.
C. Easy-going and organised. D. Strong-willed and positive.
23. What does Dio’s experience suggest?
A. Music bridges the gap between people. B. Music makes education more successful.
C. Music is the medicine of a troubled mind. D. Music is the language of all human beings.
A 21. B 22. D 23. C

C
D 25. C 26. B 27. A
根据第二段“The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called "Manpo---kei, which translates to "10,000 steps meter". (每天走一万步的目标似乎来自于日本山正时钟(Yamasa Clock) 1965年出售的一款计步器。这个装置被称为“Manpo---kei”,翻译过来就是“一万步计”。)”可知步行者走一万步最初是来源于Manpo-kei.,故选D项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“In ancient Rome, distances were actually measured by counting steps. In fact, the word "mile" originated from the Latin phrase mila passum, which means about 2,000 steps. (在古罗马,距离实际上是用步数来计算的。事实上,mile这个词来源于拉丁语mila passum,意思是大约2000步。)”可知1 mile是2000步,那么走2miles需要走4000步,故选C项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, approximately 4,400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. (尽管一些研究表明,1万步对健康有益,但哈佛医学院(Harvard Medical School)最近的研究表明,平均每天大约走4400步就足以显著降低女性的死亡风险。相比之下,他们每天只走2700步左右。人们走的步数越多,死亡的风险就越低,然后逐渐稳定在每天7500步左右。)”可知,每天7500步左右是女性的理想步行数。故选B项。
【27题详解】
短语猜测题。根据画线词所在句“The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. (人们走的步数越多,死亡的风险就越低,然后逐渐leveling off每天7500步左右。)”以及下一句“No additional benefits were seen with more steps. (多走几步并没有额外的好处。)”可知每天行走的步数最后的“稳定”在7500左右,因为多了也没有额外的好处,结合选项可知,A项“保持稳定”与leveling off意思相近,符合题意,故选A项。
C. Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time.
D 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据第二段“It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than ‘by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science & Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical society.(这听起来可能很奇怪,但根据美国化学学会出版的同行评审科学期刊《环境科学与技术》上的一篇新报告,更环保的购物方式是去实体店,而不是从没有实体店的公司在线购买)”以及第三段“In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.(在这项研究中,研究人员估计,与从只通过互联网销售的公司订购产品相比,在实体店购买卫生纸、洗发水和牙膏等经常购买的商品通常产生的温室气体排放更少)”可知,作者提到新报告的目的是为了证明线下购物(去实体店购物)的优势。
根据第四段“Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.(许多人经常在网上购物,但他们每次只买几件商品。“当他们在商店购物时,他们会把这些商品aggregate在一次大采购中,”参与这项为期一年半的研究的六名研究人员之一的Sadegh Shahmohammadi指出)”可知,与网上购物每次只买几件商品相比,在实体店购物时人们会把这些商品在一次大采购中“合并、组合”起来,所以“aggregate”意为“合并、组合”,与“Combine”意思相近。故选A。
根据第六段“The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.(该团队对商品从工厂一直运送到最终消费者的过程进行了建模研究。然后,他们特别关注了零售供应链中被称为“最后一英里”配送的部分:商店到顾客的距离,或者在网上购物的情况下,商品配送中心到顾客的距离)”以及最后一段“The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks & clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.(分析显示,在63%的购物事件中,实体店每件商品的温室气体总排放量高于“实体+网络”(人们在网上订购,实体店将商品配送给他们)的购买方式,但在81%的购物事件中低于纯网络卖家(严格的在线卖家)的购买方式)”可知,“最后一英里”配送会影响总的温室气体排放量,即影响总的温室气体足迹。
根据最后一段“The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks & clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.(分析显示,在63%的购物事件中,实体店每件商品的温室气体总排放量高于“实体+网络”(人们在网上订购,实体店将商品配送给他们)的购买方式,但在81%的购物事件中低于纯网络卖家(严格的在线卖家)的购买方式)”可推知,最环保的购物方式可能是从线上订购、实体店配送的商家那里购买。
After the speaker has finished talking a good listener may take some time before responding.

That’s why it’s important for everyone to learn how to be a better listener.(这就是为什么对每个人来说学习如何成为一个更好的倾听者是很重要的)表明了学会倾听很重要,在空格处承上启下,符合语境,故选G。
本段的主题句是“Listen without making judgements.(倾听而不作评论)”,空格前说“Most people tend to judge others during conversations.(大多数人都倾向于在谈话中评判别人)”,空格处应否定这么一种做法,E选项But judging isn’t helpful when you’re having a conversation.(但当你在谈话时,评论是没有用的)说明在谈话时,评论是不好的,承接上文,呼应了本段主题,符合语境,故选E。
空格处是本段的主题句,空格后的“sit back with your arms crossed(双臂交叉坐好)”和“turning your head and body to face them and by making eye contact(转动你的头和身体面对他们,并进行眼神交流)”都是肢体语言,因此本段主要讲的是要使用肢体语言,A选项Use positive body language.(使用积极的肢体语言)符合本段的主题,切合题意,故选A。
空格前说“If someone is telling you about their ski trip, don’t respond with “That’s nice.”(如果有人告诉你他们的滑雪之旅,不要回答“那很好。”)”,空格后说“Instead, you can ask, “How long have you been skiing?” or “What was your favorite part of the trip?”(相反,你可以问“你滑雪多长时间了?”或者“你最喜欢这次旅行的哪一部分?”)”,说明空格前的事情是不好的,C选项That would show a lack of interest and disrespect.(这将表明缺乏兴趣和不尊重)指出了空格前描述的那件事不好的原因,因此C选项符合语境,故选C。
空格前说“Doing so either makes the speaker first feel you’re listening to what they’re saying.(这样做要么会让说话者首先感到你在倾听他们所说的话)”,空格后说“In this way, it will make the speaker feel comfortable as they see you processing what they've said.(这样,当说话者看到你在处理他们所说的话时,他们会感到很舒服)”,空格处起着承上启下的作用,继续讲“Simply take a few seconds to think or say, “Give me a second to think about that.”(只要花几秒钟想一下,或者说:“给我一秒钟考虑一下。”)” Then they will know you want to be thoughtful in your response.(然后他们就会知道你想要在回答时考虑周到)说明了前面那样做的好处,承上启下,符合语境,故选F。

He returned, and for an endless minute neither of us spoke while I prayed for some way to save the future I had felt in my grasp.

“What do you want?” he repeated. Suddenly I had the answer. Mother had always told me poor people were basically kind. I didn’t think this man would want to hurt me. I looked out into the fog that was swirling outside. “This is my first job,” I said. “Jobs are scarce now, aren’t they?”
He searched my face intently, then smiled a very gentle smile, “Yes”, he said. “Indeed they are. But I’m sure you’ll do very well in yours. May I wish you luck?”

故填will see。
故填must/might。
这里考查“out of the corner of one’s eye”,为固定搭配,意为“用眼角余光”,符合语境,且句首时首字母应大写。故填Out of。
故填to which。
故填To lose。
故填even if/even though。
此空考查谓语动词,主语he与come为主动关系, “come into the store”这个动作发生在“intend to steal”之前,是过去的过去,应用过去完成时的否定形式。故填hadn’t come。
know后接宾语从句,从句中 felt like后缺宾语,应用连接代词what。故填what。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
When 1 finished the course, Ollie came over.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On my second time through the obstacle course, Ollie stood up for me.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I finished the course, Ollie came over: “It doesn’t matter. You made it last year. I know you can make your second run a good one”. He tapped me on the shoulder gently, and said in an encouraging voice. How come he cheered on me, the “enemy”? I raised my head and stared into his eyes with confusion. “You are my best friend! You will be the best!” It is simple words, spoken from the heart, found their way straight into mine. I realized that being on the competing team shouldn’t get in the way of our friendship.
On my second time through the obstacle course, Ollie stood up for me. I took a deep breath, toed the line and was ready to run. With the cheers of Ollie and my teammates, I ended up with the fastest time on my team. And to my surprise. Ollie also got the fastest time on his team. The entire Panda VS Grizzly match ended in a tie. From then on, I decided not to take the “enemy” comments too seriously. It’s possible to do your best for your team and to remain friends with someone on the other team.
