A hope that things will be better today than they were yesterday. But not for me. My name is Eep. And this is my family, the Croods. If you weren’t clued in already by the animal skins and sloping foreheads, we’re cavemen (穴居人). Most days we spend in our cave, in the dark. Night after night, day after day. Yes, home, sweet home. When we did go out, we fought to find food in a difficult and dangerous world. And I fought to live on with my family. We were the last ones around. There used to be neighbours. Uh, the Gorts. smashed by a mammoth (猛犸象). The Horks, swallowed (吞) by a sand snake. The Erfs, mosquito bite. The Throgs, common cold. And the Croods, that’s us. The Croods made it, because of my dad. He was strong, and he followed the rules. The ones were painted on the cave walls. Anything new is bad. Curiosity (好奇心) is bad. Going out at night is bad. Basically, anything fun is bad. Welcome to my world! But this is a story about how all that changed suddenly, because what we didn’t know was that our world was about to come to an end. And there were no rules on our cave walls to prepare us for that. 1. What do we know from the first paragraph? A. Eep is full of energy. B. Eep is afraid of the sun. C. Eep has no hope for her future. D. Eep hates new things. 2. Which animal caused the Horks’ death? A. B. C. D. 3. What might the text be? A. An opening scene. B. A travel guide. C. A news report. D. The purpose of this project was to use the rich experience and knowledge of retired (退休) teachers to improve the education of universities in western China. After retiring from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Xu began volunteering at China University of Petroleum-Beijing at Karamay in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Most of the retired teachers come from the developed large cities. And the dry climate (气候) sandy weather and simple living conditions in Xinjiang are very challenging. But Xu has just one request: to cook in her room, as she loves light meals and doesn’t like the strong-flavored (重口味) local dishes. Although they are volunteers, these teachers work energetically. Take 64-year-old Zhong Dakang as an example. He was a teacher from China University of Petroleum, Beijing. He often works overtime, spending the whole day in front of his computer and sometimes forgetting to take his blood pressure medicine. Chen Xiaohe,71, is a retired teacher from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Having difficulty in walking because of a car accident, he still enjoys teaching in front of a class. Chen even stays at the Karamay campus during the winter and summer vacations, preparing lessons and teaching materials. And he has extended (延长) his one-year volunteer time to three years. The praise he receives from students may be why he decides to stay longer. The course he teaches is often praised for being clear and easy to understand. 4. What is the main purpose of the pilot project? A. To make retired teachers make more money. B. To make retired teachers find more things to do. C. To make retired teachers have a new life experience. D. To help the education of universities in western China. 5. What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 and 4? A. Xu Shuangmin likes the weather in Xinjiang. B. Zhong Dakang can look after himself very well. C Xu Shuangmin is really good at cooking local foods. D. Zhong Dakang is really hard-working about his work. 6. What can we infer about Chen Xiaohe from his story? A. He has a great sense of achievement about his job. B. He will not return to his hometown anymore. C. He will stop teaching three years later. D. He will start to teach other courses. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Volunteer Teachers’ Challenging Life B. Silver-Age Teachers in Western China C. Meaningful Vacations for Retired Teachers D. Valuable Help from Universities in Western China C Pip Williams is an Australian writer and social researcher. Her writing comes from doing lots of historical research. People really like her because she can always bring back stories that were almost forgotten and discuss emotional topics with grace (优雅地). The Bookbinder of Jericho is set during World War I, and the novel follows twin sisters Peggy and Maude, who work at the Oxford University Press. Their job is to fold printed pages that will become books, but Peggy wants more from life. Secretly collecting unwanted pages to read, Peggy dreams of studying at Oxford, even though society, money, and her duty to Maude stand in her way. Maude lives with a disability, and Peggy feels responsible for her. During the war, Peggy makes friends with Lotte, who used to be a librarian, and Bastiaan, a wounded soldier. These new friendships inspire her to take action, and Gwen, an Oxford student, encourages her to apply (申请) to Somerville College, one of the few colleges open to women. The novel explores Peggy’s inner struggle (内心挣扎). She wants to receive an education but is worried about leaving Maude behind. In the end, she has to decide what kind of future she wants and what she’s ready to give up to achieve her goal. What makes The Bookbinder of Jericho one of the best books to read is its honest look at ambition and quiet resistance (反抗). It shows how language and learning can offer freedom, even when you face many difficulties. If you read it carefully, you will find several themes in the book: the importance of knowledge, the fight for women’s rights, and the lives history forgets. The Bookbinder of Jericho doesn’t shout, but it says a lot. And in that silence, it finds its power. 8. What is special about Pip Williams’ writing? A. She focuses on famous people. B. She creates exciting new worlds. C. She writes about famous historical events. D. She gives voice to forgotten stories and feelings. 9. Why does Peggy collect unwanted pages? A. To make a new book. B. To recycle the waste paper. C. To get more knowledge. D. To play games with her sister. 10. What do Peggy’s new friends do for her? A. They help take care of her sister. B. They find a different job for her. C. They pay money for her education. D. They give her courage to achieve dreams. 11. What can you infer from the last paragraph about The Bookbinder of Jericho? A. It is about silence. B. It is quiet but powerful. C. It has very little dialogue. D. It is difficult to understand. D What if you order your favourite burger and have it fly to your door by drone (无人机). Well, that’s exactly what’s happening on an island in Sweden! A Norwegian company called Aviant has started testing food deliveries (配送) by drone, bringing freshly made hamburgers from a popular fast-food restaurant to homes on the island of Varmdo, just east of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Varmdo is almost right beside the Swedish capital, but it’s not easy to get there quickly. You can drive or take a ferry (渡船), but you can’t cycle or walk there. And tens of thousands of people live there, with tens of thousands more coming to stay for the summer. “As you can see on the map, there are 87,000 people who don’t have access to a home delivery service,” an official of Aviant said. “These people live in what you would call suburbs (郊区), and would want to order takeaway food, but they just don’t have a choice.” At the moment, Aviant’s drone service is in a test phase, delivering about 10 meals a week. The drones can fly for up to 10 minutes and travel almost 10 kilometres. It took three years of testing to make sure the food stayed fresh—because at first the meals arrived cold or wet! But now, Aviant says, the food arrives warm, even in the famously cold Scandinavian weather. The company is planning to expand next to Nesodden, an area in Norway that’s about 6.5 kilometres from Oslo (the capital of Norway), but a 47-kilometre journey by road. If everything goes well, Aviant hopes to start drone food deliveries across Scandinavia, and maybe even in North America. So, could your next food delivery come from the sky? Well, for some people, that future is already taking off! 12. How does the writer lead into the topic? A. By listing a fact. B. By showing a map. C. By imagining a situation. D. By giving an example. 13. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about? A. The reason Varmdo needs drone delivery. B. The transportation ways to get to Varmdo. C. The population and summer tourists of Varmdo. D. The problem that people in Varmdo can’t order food. 14. What can we learn about Aviant’s drone service? A. It can deliver at least 10 meals every day. B. The drones can cover nearly 47 kilometres. C. Aviant can keep the food fresh at the moment. D. The food can never arrive warm in cold weather. 15. What does the underlined word “expand” mean? A. control B. spread C. prevent D. miss Ready for Tomorrow? The company is planning to expand next to Nesodden an area in Norway that’s about 6.5 kilometres from Oslo (the capital of Norway), but a 47-kilometre journey by road.
