Cities in Africa Perfect for Solo Travel
Adventurous travelers usually have Africa on their travel list. But as the second-largest continent, unclear dreams of traveling to Africa won’t cut it. You need to know which region you’re heading to, and how to get the most out of your trip.
Desert dreams: Merzouga, Morocco
You can easily explore the desert from Merzouga, which offers a range of deals for travelers of all budgets. From Merzouga, you can day trip into the Sahara or go on a multi-day tour. Many tours also allow you easy access to Berber camps— and Berber culture is incredibly charming.
Safari central: Kasane, Botswana
If safaris(观兽旅行) are your focus, head to Kasane, Botswana. This city is located on the ‘Four Corners’, which makes it a great starting point for all of your safari adventures. And because Kasane is in the center, you can easily expand your adventures into neighboring countries and hit other landmarks, including the famous Victoria Falls.
Beachy atmospheres: Zanzibar, Tanzania
Zanzibar is the first location on my travel list. Over the last decade, the island has slowly become a more popular tourist destination, which means you’ll have plenty of familiar construction, from bars to nightclubs. That being said, Zanzibar is also an ancient island. It’s been occupied for centuries by diverse forces, which have all left their cultural print.
Ancient history: Lalibela, Ethiopia
When it comes to ancient history, Egypt’s ancient pyramids and Mali’s Timbuktu are hard to beat. But I’m a culture and history addict, which means Ethiopia’s Lalibela is my official pick for exploring history in Africa.
1. Which region is an ideal base for exploring multiple countries?
A. Merzouga. B. Kasane. C. Zanzibar. D. Lalibela.
2. What is a feature of Zanzibar mentioned in the text?
A. It’s culturally varied. B. It’s remote and inaccessible.
C. It’s newly discovered. D. It’s modern and over-crowded.
3. Why does Lalibela appeal to the author?
A. It stands for Egyptian history. B. It is budget friendly.
C. It goes with his personal interests. D. It is officially recommended.
B
Last summer, I volunteered at a small woodworking studio in the old part of our city. It was there that I met Mr. Chen, a 58-year-old master craftsman whose hands told stories of decades working with wood. While his workshop was filled with traditional tools, what he created was anything but conventional wooden furniture that perfectly blended classic craftsmanship with contemporary design. What struck me most was Mr. Chen’s unique perspective on what he called “new-era craftsmanship.” Though he learned woodworking from his father as a teenager, he never confined himself to old methods. Recognizing the changing preferences of younger customers, he spent evenings teaching himself 3D modeling software and weekends researching sustainable materials like bamboo composites and water-based finishes.
I witnessed his innovative approach firsthand when a young couple asked for a custom bookshelf for their small apartment. They needed something space-efficient, eco-friendly, and easy to tear apart for potential moves. Mr. Chen embraced the challenge enthusiastically.
Over the next week, he created multiple digital prototypes, experimented with three different types of wood, and reinvented traditional techniques to create interlocking joints that required no metal fasteners. I often found him working late, his experienced hands carefully testing each component. When I asked why he invested such extraordinary effort into what seemed like a simple project, he paused from his work and smiled. “True craftsmanship isn’t about blindly repeating what our ancestors did,” he explained. “It’s about understanding the essence of tradition while having the courage to adapt it for today’s world.” To illustrate his point, he showed me two bookshelves — one he made twenty years ago, beautiful in its solid construction, and the new prototype, which used thirty percent less material while being equally steady and more functional for modern living.
Through Mr. Chen’s example, I came to understand that new-era craftsmanship represents the perfect marriage of dedication and innovation. It honors the past while embracing the future, proving that excellence comes not from doing one thing forever, but from doing it well with an ever-evolving spirit.
4. Traditional tools are mentioned in Paragraph1 to _______.
A. stress Mr. Chen’s source of inspiration
B. highlight the wisdom of past generations
C. promote the spirit of traditional craftsmanship
D. contrast with Mr.Chen’s modern and creative ideas
5 Why does the author list specific requests from the young couple?
A. To display the shift of traditional craftsmanship.
B. To reveal the challenges facing today’s craftsmen.
C. To imply the need for craftsmen to go with the times.
D. To distinguish modern approaches from traditional ones.
6. What does “true craftsmanship” mean in Mr. Chen’s viewpoint?
A. Creating resource-efficient products.
B. Persisting through testing and effort.
C. Adapting traditional wisdom for modern use.
D. Combining digital and traditional techniques.
7. What does Mr. Chen’s story show?
A. The best of both worlds.
B. Two sides of a coin.
C. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.
D. What is new is not always better.
C
Rock climbing may seem like a sport filled with dangers. But experts say it offers participants (参与者) many physical and mental health benefits (益处) that aren’t always found in other sports.
Climbing as a sport became popular in the 1980s, with the nation’s first indoor climbing gym opening in Seattle. Over 10 million Americans had participated in climbing by 2020, and sport climbing appeared the following year at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. And more people are climbing than ever — thanks to hot movies such as Free Solo and The Dawn Wall. Today, there are over 500 indoor climbing walls in the United States.
Rock climbing attracts many people as an excellent sport. As a full-body exercise that includes a lot of pulling, pushing and lifting, rock climbing helps build muscle (肌肉) strength. What’s more, the more you climb, the better your balance is, “Climbing helps you be aware of your body and improves the way you move your body,” said Nick Wilkes, owner and head instructor at Devils Lake Climbing Guides, a guide service in Madison, Wisconsin.
Many of rock climbing’s skills lie in determining and remembering your climbing route (路线) in advance. You also need to solve problems on the fly, changing your route if you meet with unexpected difficulties.
People prefer rock climbing partly because of the teamwork and safety support in the process, especially in roped climbing. Roped climbers have a partner on the ground called a belayer (保护者), who holds the rope to manage the force, catch any falls and lower the climber. Throughout a climb, the two must continuously communicate about such concerns as needed rope force, when the climber wants to rest and when it’s time to come down.
“In order for me to be a better climber, I have to communicate clearly with the person belaying me so he knows how I’m feeling, when I need a break or if I want to change the climb in any way,” said Lindsay Wendt, fitness trainer of Atlanta-based Break Free Fitness.
8. What has caused more people to start climbing?
A. Its physical health benefits. B. Popular movies about climbing.
C. More indoor climbing gyms in the US. D. Its appearance as an Olympic sport.
9. What is Nick Wilkes’ attitude towards rock climbing?
A. Disagreeable. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Positive.
10. What is the reason for roped climbers to communicate with their belayers continuously?
A. To choose safer climbing routes. B. To share needs and feelings clearly.
C. To learn better climbing skills. D. To record the climbing process.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To tell the history of climbing. B. To compare climbing with other sports.
C. To introduce the basic rules of climbing. D. To explain the popularity of rock climbing.
D
Carnivores (肉食主义) can boost biodiversity by restricting their red meat consumption to one small burger a week rather than cutting beef out entirely, research suggests.
Cows and sheep are a major source of the powerful greenhouse gas and soy imported to feed farm animals is a driver of rainforest destruction. Meat production is linked to water and air pollution, especially when dung (粪肥) washes off into rivers.
Rearing cows and sheep can help wildlife directly. Large blue butterflies rely on farm animals feeding on grasslands. The dung from a single 700kg cow can produce enough insects to feed approximately 30 swallows. The team used infrared cameras and acoustic monitors to observe bats feeding at night over fields of cows. The presence of cow dung alone increased bat activity by four times; the presence of the cows increased bat activity by 12 times. Farm animals can also indirectly aid wildlife, from the creation of hay pastures to ponds and rows of bushes.
The ideal number of cows and sheep in the UK to boost biodiversity would require just four million hectares of land for grazing livestock, down from the current total of 13 million. That would require a 90 per cent cut in our meat consumption, allowing us each 4.2kg of meat a year, or one modest burger a week with no cheese. The team’s modelling included setting aside land suitable for growing beans to provide the protein to fill the gap left by the fall in meat production.
The number of cattle reared for beef is already on a long-term decline, falling further this year. The idea of such a radical shift is unlikely to land well with farmers. Gathorne-Hardy said, “I’m annoying meat producers because I’m saying we can’t produce very much. And I’m annoying vegans (素食主义者) because I’m saying some meat, some livestock production, is environmentally good.” His research was presented at the annual meeting of the British Ecological Society.
12. Why does the author include both the problems and benefits of animal farming?
A. To justify reducing meat without banning it. B. To argue for ending all meat production.
C. To claim farming must be stopped completely. D. To say farming’s benefits clearly exceed its harms.
13. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The Role of Beans in Protein Replacement
B. Land Use and Consumption Adjustment Plan
C. Calculating Ideal Livestock Numbers for the UK
D. The Impact of Meat Reduction on Biodiversity
14. What do Gathorne-Hardy’s words imply for implementing this plan?
A. A theoretical plan with little real impact. B. Farmers’ support due to current trends.
C. Vegans’ backing for environmental benefits. D. Resistance from both producers and vegans.
15. What’s the title of the passage?
A. Vegans and Farmers Unite for Ecology B. Why Livestock Farming Must End
C. One Burger a Week Helps the Environment D. Health Benefits of Eating Less Meat

We all have things that we want to achieve in our lives-getting into the better shape, building a successful business, raising a wonderful family, and so on.___16___, At least, this is how I approached my life goals until recently.
What I’m starting to realize, however, is that when it comes to actually getting things done and making progress in the areas that are important to you, there is a much better way to do things. It all comes down to the difference between goals and systems.___17___ Your system is the writing schedule that you follow each week. Now for the really interesting question: If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still get tcstilts? I think you would.
___18___ In the last 12 months, I’ve written over 115, 000 words. The typical book is about 50, 000 to 60, 000 words, so I have written enough to fill two books this year. All of this is such a surprise because I never set a goal for my writing. I didn’t measure my progress in relation to some benchmark. ___19___ 1 never said, “I want to write two books this year.” What I did focus on was writing one article every Monday and Thursday. I focused on my system and the process of doing the work. And after sticking to that schedule for 11 months, the result was 115, 000 words. In the end,I enjoyed the same (or perhaps better) results.
Goals are good for planning your progress and systems are good for actually making progress.Goals can provide direction and even push you forward in the short term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win. Having a system is what matters. ___20___
A. None of this is to say that goals are useless.
B. If you’re a writer, your goal is to write a book.
C. Forget about predicting the future and build a system.
D. I never set a word count goal for any particular article.
E. Committing to the process is what makes the difference.
F. And for most of us, the path to those things starts by setting a specific goal.
G. As an example, I just added up the total word count for the articles I’ve written this year.

As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

5. Why does the author list specific requests from the young couple?
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. C 7. A

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. D

【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Roped climbers have a partner on the ground called a belayer (保护者), who holds the rope to manage the force, catch any falls and lower the climber. Throughout a climb, the two must continuously communicate about such concerns as needed rope force, when the climber wants to rest and when it’s time to come down.(系着绳索的攀岩者在地面上会有一个搭档,叫做保护者。保护者负责握住绳索,以控制拉力、接住任何坠落,并让攀岩者安全下降。在整个攀岩过程中,两人必须不断沟通,比如绳索需要多大拉力、攀岩者什么时候想休息,以及什么时候该下来。)”可知,绳索攀岩者持续与保护人员保持沟通是为了清晰地分享自己的需求和感受。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Rock climbing may seem like a sport filled with dangers. But experts say it offers participants (参与者) many physical and mental health benefits (益处) that aren’t always found in other sports.(攀岩这项运动看似充满危险,但专家表示,它为参与者带来了许多身体和心理健康方面的益处,而这些益处并非其他运动所能提供的)”以及通读全文可知,文章首段破除攀岩有危险的偏见,提出身心健康益处;第二段说明攀岩的流行趋势;后四段主要从体能锻炼、脑力挑战及团队协作三个方面说明人们热衷于攀岩的原因。因此,文章的目的应该是“解释攀岩的流行”。故选D。

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

文章既提到畜牧业带来的如温室气体排放、雨林破坏、污染等问题,又提及它对野生动物的直接和间接帮助,结合第一段“Carnivores(肉食主义) can boost biodiversity by restricting their red meat consumption to one small burger a week rather than cutting beef out entirely, research suggests. (研究表明,肉食主义者可以通过将红肉摄入量限制在每周一个小汉堡,而不是完全不吃牛肉,来促进生物多样性。)”可知,作者提及这些是为了说明减少肉类消费而非禁止的合理性,故选A项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The ideal number of cows and sheep in the UK to boost biodiversity would require just four million hectares of land for grazing livestock, down from the current total of 13 million. That would require a 90 per cent cut in our meat consumption, allowing us each 4.2kg of meat a year, or one modest burger a week with no cheese. The team’s modelling included setting aside land suitable for growing beans to provide the protein to fill the gap left by the fall in meat production.
根据最后一段“Gathorne-Hardy said, “I’m annoying meat producers because I’m saying we can’t produce very much. And I’m annoying vegans(素食主义者) because I’m saying some meat, some livestock production, is environmentally good.” (加索恩-哈迪说:“我惹恼了肉类生产商,因为我说我们不能生产太多。我也惹恼了素食主义者,因为我说一些肉类、一些畜牧业生产对环境有好处。”)”可知,实施该计划会受到肉类生产商和素食主义者的抵制。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Carnivores (肉食主义) can boost biodiversity by restricting their red meat consumption to one small burger a week rather than cutting beef out entirely, research suggests.
【答案】16. F 17. B 18. G 19. D 20. E

Hearing that you are interested in the Charity Sale held by the Student Union of our school last weekends, I’m writing to get you informed about it.
The Charity Sale with the aim of giving love to children in poor mountainous areas, was a huge success. We prepared mangy things which we made by hand in our spare time, such as kites, model planes and so on, which looked very beautiful and attracted a lot of attentions. Many students and teachers came to take part in it. It went well, and the results were worth the effort. We made over 2000 yuan in the end. We used the money to buy some learning and sports goods, and then mailed them to children in need.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind. “Why not give grandpa a surprise?” I said to myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I contacted all the players in the photo. To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene real, I even managed to find all the basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similar-looking basketball court. The big day finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special game. While playing, I kept an eye on grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something. Glancing at grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before. Sitting in the warm sunlight, he cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. For a while, my mind seemed to flash back to those beautiful days. Indeed, my plan somewhat worked. I was overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an important person in my 1ife. I was not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing was certain: it’d definitely stick in mine.
