William Dunn, founder of Take a Kid Fishing, Inc. , uses fishing to guide and support needy and fatherless children. A dozen years ago, he noticed his young neighbor Camran — a troubled, often angry six-year-old without a father. With the permission of Camran’s mother, William took him fishing. The moment he cast (抛) the fishing rod (杆), Camran was “hooked”. As they fished together regularly, the boy’s behavior started getting noticeably better, leading William to realize his calling: to help fatherless children.
While working as a tire salesman during the week, William devotes his weekends to this mission. He and volunteers take groups of 20-25 children from local foster (寄养) homes on boat trips. Most of these children have never fished before. Known as “Big Will”, he teaches them the basics and the life lessons fishing offers: patience, teamwork, and the simple joy of being outdoors. So far, his nonprofit project has conducted over 600 trips, involving nearly 2,000 children.
William’s own childhood in Miami, where he and his father built a strong relationship over fishing in the Florida Keys, drives his passion. “Fishing was so peaceful; it was like an escape,” he recalls. He aims to provide that same experience and a caring presence for kids who lack a father figure. Through repeated trips, he builds lasting relationships. Camran, now 20, still fishes with William and sees him as a father figure.
When William explained his mission to the captain of the Double Eagle, a boat in Clearwater, the captain offered him a great deal — a significantly reduced rate of just $25 per child to spend the day on the boat. Besides, some company sponsors have donated fishing tools and clothing. William has received donations from individuals too. “My community has really come alongside me in this mission,” he says. “Anything we need, they help.”
William’s work powerfully demonstrates that a simple, shared activity like fishing can become a reliable way to cast hope, offer guidance, and create a sense of stability in the lives of children in need.
4. Why did William start his project?
A. He was inspired by a captain’s generous offer.
B. He noticed a boy’s transformation through fishing.
C. He wanted to honor his own father who loved fishing.
D He received a request for help from local community.
5. What helps cover the cost of William’s weekend programs?
A. Donations from foster homes. B. His income as a salesman.
C. Support from various sources. D. Profits from the boat trips.
6. Which of the following best describes William?
A. Patient and intelligent. B. gentle and professional.
C. Courageous and generous. D. Considerate and devoted.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Take a Kid Fishing: Casting Hope B. “Big Will” : From Salesman to Captain
C. Change of Camran: Fishing with Father D. Community Efforts: Teaching Kids Fishing

As a university lecturer, it’s hard for me to ignore the widespread use of AI, which has already become an essential tool in education today. However, I am deeply disappointed to see that the majority of our students use AI to complete their assignments — not to improve their thinking skills. They are telling AI to think for them, rather than thinking with AI. I believe this trend will, over time, blunt the minds of our youth, consequently damaging the potential of our young generation.
Living with AI is a reality we cannot reject, and it offers notable educational benefits. For instance, AI enables personalized learning: unlike the past, when we struggled to find challenging reference books or workbooks in bookstores, we can now talk to AI, which understands our skill level and provides exercises based on our capabilities.
Besides, AI can be our debate opponent. This idea matches philosopher Martha Nussbaum’s opinion in her book Not For Profit. She stresses the value of the Socratic method, a way of studying through asking and answering questions. Engaging in such dialogue not only promotes our argumentative skills but also strengthens our critical thinking — an ability widely recognized as essential for success in the 21st century. Using AI as a practice debate partner can help us test how well we understand issues and defend our views.
However, we must be cautious (谨慎的)when using AI. As writer Drew Turney noted, “The more that people use AI, the more likely they are to think too highly of their own abilities.” When ordinary people rely heavily on AI to complete specific tasks, it has the potential to create an overly strong sense of confidence in their own abilities, known in psychology as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
A study in Computers in Human Behavior further confirms that too much trust in AI-generated work — without monitoring or editing — increases users’ overconfidence and ultimately dulls their basic skills. For example, if writing tasks are completely handed over to AI, then one day, humans potentially risk losing their ability to compose well.
AI can be an excellent tool to quicken our learning process. But, sadly, today AI is more commonly used to complete specific tasks by irresponsible users. If university assignments are entirely AI-generated, what is the point of pursuing higher education?
8. What does “blunt” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Keep. B. Weaken. C. Change. D. Enrich.
9. Why does the author mention Martha Nussbaum’s book?
A. To explain the working process of AI.
B. To stress the value of higher education.
C. To highlight AI’s role as a debate partner.
D. To introduce one of her influential works.
10. What is a potential negative effect of overusing AI?
A. It hurts users’ self-confidence. B. It lowers users’ work efficiency.
C. It weakens users’ necessary skills. D. It limits users’ argumentative ability.
11. What is the author’s overall attitude towards the use of AI?
A. Fully supportive. B. Highly critical.
C. Cautiously optimistic. D. Completely neutral.
D
Have you ever felt completely in tune with someone while working together, as if your minds were connected? New research suggests this might be literally true — your brains may actually synchronize (同步)when you two work together. Humans are social beings who depend heavily on teamwork, from communicating to working on projects. True cooperation requires shared understanding and similar thinking patterns. Scientists have now found evidence of this in brain activity, observable within milliseconds when two people work toward a common goal.
But is this brain synchrony simply because both people are doing the same task, or is it specifically because they are “working together”? To find out, researcher Denise Moerel and her team designed a clever experiment with 24 pairs of participants. Each pair first discussed and agreed on rules to sort shapes that varied in form, pattern, and size. Once the rules were set, the teammates worked back-to-back in silence, each viewing a shared workspace on their own screen without talking. During this stage, scientists used EEG devices to record their brain waves and measure how in agreement they were.
The results were eye-opening. In the first moment after a shape appeared (45-180 milliseconds), everyone’s brain activity looked similar— they were all doing the same task. But after about 200 milliseconds, the brain activity of “real teammates” remained synchronized, while it differed from others in the room. This brain synchrony grew stronger as the experiment went on. Importantly, this effect was much stronger in real pairs than in “pseudo-pairs” — randomly (随机) matched individuals who used similar rules but had never actually worked together.
This suggests that matched brain activity is not just about following the same instructions; it is shaped by social interaction itself. For example, two different pairs might choose the same rules, yet their brain synchrony across pairs remained weak. True partners showed uniquely matched brain patterns. As the researchers note, “social interactions play a central role in shaping how our brains work during cooperation.” The discovery deepens our understanding of how teamwork functions on a neural (神经的) level. It may also help improve future research on communication, group decision-making, and the science of learning together.
12. What is the main discovery of the new research?
A. People think differently during similar tasks.
B. Human depend heavily on social connections.
C. Working together can lead to various opinions.
D. Teammates’ brains match when they share a goal.
13. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The process of an experiment. B. The rules for sorting shapes.
C. The opinions of different scientists. D. The causes of brain synchrony.
14. What can we learn from the results?
A. Pseudo-pairs showed no brain synchrony.
B. Pules mattered more than social interaction.
C. Participants’ brain activity remained similar.
D. Brain synchrony grew in real pairs with time.
15. What value does the discovery hold?
A. It may advance research on group activities.
B. It may bring breakthrough in neural research.
C. It may help develop communication skills.
D. It may benefit studies on learning methods.

第二节 读后续写 (25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Petey, we’re here!” Seeing the familiar house, Annie excitedly turned to the backseat. “Yeah, for that sticky rice stuff,” said her brother, his eyes fixed on his phone. Mom sighed. She had tried explaining all week that making nian gao was the perfect way for them, a Chinese American family, to welcome the Lunar New Year. But to 15-year-old Petey, it was just a boring, messy old tradition — not part of his modern life.
When they arrived, Grandpa was already waiting at the front door. Drawn by the nice smell, Annie rushed into the kitchen. Petey followed slowly. “Doing this again?”
Grandpa led Petey to the kitchen. “We leave the sticky rice in water overnight, and then steam it,” he explained. “Then we hit it while it’s hot until it becomes a smooth dough (面团). It’s how we welcome the new year — with sweetness.” He held out a long wooden pounding stick to Petey. “Want to try?” “I’m okay,” Petey said, stepping back with his hands in his pockets. He watched from the side as Annie hit the rice.
Finally, after Annie finished her job, Grandma brought the big, warm and soft dough to the table. Dad, who arrived late because of some work things, also joined everyone in the kitchen. “This is the last step,” Grandma said, shaping the dough skillfully with her rough but gentle hands. As she made a small cake, her eyes fell on an old photo of her own mother on the wall. “My mom said the warmth of nian gao is the warmth of a family,” she continued, holding the cake out to Petey. “Every generation makes its own choice about traditions. Some keep them with their hands, some with their hearts.” She smiled, her tired yet hopeful eyes meeting his. “Would you like to try now?”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。
Petey took the cake and had a bite.

D. He received a request for help from local community.
5. What helps cover the cost of William’s weekend programs?
A. Donations from foster homes. B. His income as a salesman.
C. Support from various sources. D. Profits from the boat trips.
6. Which of the following best describes William?
A. Patient and intelligent. B. gentle and professional.
C. Courageous and generous. D. Considerate and devoted.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Take a Kid Fishing: Casting Hope B. “Big Will” : From Salesman to Captain
C. Change of Camran: Fishing with Father D. Community Efforts: Teaching Kids Fishing
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. C

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“A study in Computers in Human Behavior further confirms that too much trust in AI-generated work — without monitoring or editing — increases users’ overconfidence and ultimately dulls their basic skills.(《计算机在人类行为中的应用》杂志上的一项研究进一步证实,过度信任人工智能生成的作品——不加监控或编辑——会增加用户的过度自信,并最终削弱他们的基本技能)”可知,过度使用人工智能的一个潜在负面影响是削弱用户必要的技能。

【答案】范文
Petey took the cake and had a bite. The soft, glutinous texture melted in his mouth, sweet but not cloying, carrying the faint fragrance of steamed rice. It was nothing like the boring food he had imagined — there was a warm, familiar taste, like the hugs Grandpa gave him when he was little. Grandma watched him quietly, a smile playing on her lips. Petey put down the cake, reached out his hand, and picked up the wooden pounding stick. “Can I try again?” he said softly, his voice no longer full of indifference.
When Petey finished shaping the cakes, he handed the first one to Grandma. His fingers were still sticky with dough, but his eyes shone brightly. “Grandma, this is for you,” he said, a little shy but sincere. “It’s perfect, my boy,” she whispered, her eyes filled with tears of joy. Petey looked around the kitchen — Annie was laughing, Dad was taking photos, and Grandpa was patting his shoulder proudly. He suddenly understood: nian gao wasn’t just a tradition; it was the warmth of family, passed down from generation to generation.
