Kelvin Doe slipped out of bed and laid out the trash he’d gathered in the living room. With the power out (停电), the boy worked by candlelight, silently tinkering (摆弄) with broken electronics and other junk.
Doe wanted to light the darkness. It would take time and he would make many mistakes. Step by step, though, Doe taught himself how to turn that trash into technology. In time, his efforts lit up his home, neighborhood, and the Internet.
Doe lived in Freetown, Sierra Leone — a city in West Africa. He was 10 years old when he began collecting materials from garbage piles. Because of frequent power failures, Doe wanted to find a way to make batteries to light his family’s home. And where others saw junk, Doe saw opportunity. He started by taking apart an old battery to see how it worked. Then, when he was about 13, he built his own.
But Doe didn’t stop there. Again using parts rescued from trash, he created a radio station, making it easier for people to share ideas, discuss problems, and work out solutions.
In 2012, the 15-year-old talent caught the attention of an American university: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Invited for a three-week exchange, he presented his inventions, worked with researchers and even taught engineering students. A video of his experience, uploaded to YouTube, earned millions of views. The following year, he spoke at a TEDx Teens event, sharing his journey and encouraging young people to turn ideas into action.
This young man not only lit up the darkness of his hometown but also shone brightly on the global stage.

“I am not out of place, I am where I belong,” says British student Bruno Walker, after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a patient in Zhengzhou, China. Some locals are astonished by receiving traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) from a foreigner, but Walker is confident in his path. He is among a growing number of foreigners engaging in TCM, mixing their Western backgrounds with ancient Chinese healing arts.
Walker, from Britain, came to China in 2015, drawn by martial arts. While learning Shaolin kungfu in Henan, he developed a curiosity about Chinese culture and medicine. After a year of intensive Chinese study, he signed up in Henan University of Chinese Medicine. Now a graduate student specializing in acupuncture, he has treated over a thousand patients. “He is skilled in pulse-taking and acupuncture,” says his teacher, Professor Yu Dongdong. “He can practise independently.”
Under his Chinese name “Wuyuan”, Bruno has become an online hit on the video-sharing platform Douyin, gathering over 900,000 followers. Balancing his roles as practitioner and Internet celebrity, he presents local culture in fluent Henan dialect, often alongside his local girlfriend. “Your grasp of the Henan dialect is even more authentic than mine,” comments one follower. Apparently, his cultural involvement has endeared him to many. He has treated his grandmother’s health problems with acupuncture, leading to her swift recovery.
With his growing fan base, Bruno feels a responsibility. “Posting videos was just a pastime, but now I want to participate in more meaningful projects,” he says. He plans to create bilingual videos promoting TCM and sharing stories of ancient Chinese medical experts. “I’m devoted to spreading the awareness of TCM and its far-reaching cultural significance,” he adds. Whether in China or Britain, he plans to devote himself to TCM. “I will do anything to help people through TCM. That’s my calling.”
8. What do Bruno’s words imply in Paragraph 1?
A. He is content with the current situation. B. He is curious about doing acupuncture.
C. He is willing to cure the locals with TCM. D. He is satisfied with his foreign background.
9. Why did Bruno decide to study TCM?
A. He was influenced by his teacher. B. He aimed to introduce TCM to Britain.
C. He wanted to become an Internet celebrity. D. He was inspired while learning martial arts.
10. What does the underlined phrase “endeared him to many” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Made him famous among many people B. Helped him earn money from many people
C. Caused him to be criticized by many people D. Made him popular and liked by many people
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To explore the benefits of acupuncture.
B. To promote the development of TCM.
C. To highlight a unique cultural integration in TCM.
D. To emphasize the importance of TCM in education.

A group of farmers in Nigeria is using a technology-based method to grow crops. The method, known as aeroponics (气雾栽培), does not involve soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air.
Aeroponics is not well-known in Nigeria, but farmers there are working to make the technique more popular. The technique could make a big difference in places like the city of Abeokuta. Violent conflicts and desertification — the process by which rich land becomes desert — have made huge amounts of land unsuitable for farming.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria’s smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. “We are putting an end to seasonal food shortage in Nigeria,” said Ogbole; “Because we are the ones controlling everything that the plant requires — we are not depending on seasons. So it’s no longer seasonal farming. It is just farming anytime of the year, meaning you can plant anytime of the year. We can harvest anytime of the year,” said Ogbole.
But setting up the aeroponic farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000. And some people in Abeokuta were very much against this non-traditional method of farming. “It took a lot of effort to change people’s minds about aeroponics,” said Ogbole.
In Nigeria, about 30 million hectares (公顷) of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security. Violent conflicts and desertification are the top reasons the farmland is being lost. And only 49 percent of the land is rich. Besides, most farmers do not have the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They are also in need of high-quality seeds to guarantee better harvests.
For now, technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
12. What is special about aeroponics?
A. Crops are not grown in soil. B. Crops can grow all by themselves.
C. Crops without roots can grow well. D. Crops can grow well without water.
13. What does the new method enable farmers to do?
A. Reduce the costs of farming. B. Produce crops of higher quality.
C. Grow crops whenever they like. D. Keep crops fresh for a longer period.
14 What do we know about Abeokuta from the passage?
A. There is plenty of rich land there. B. Some people there oppose aeroponics.
C. Many farmers there are terribly violent. D. Most farmers there are technologically skilled ones.
15 What is the passage mainly about?
A. A new method of growing crops.
B. Ways to turn deserts into rich land.
C. Techniques for developing high-quality seeds.
D. The importance of fighting against worldwide hunger.

Meagan and her close friend Samantha, both school teachers, lived together in an apartment in Denver. On mornings when Samantha had class, Meagan would help to watch her 2-year-old daughter, Hannah. Also part of the household was Meagan’s pet, Willie, a particularly intelligent and chatty parrot.
Willie was indeed funny and a good talker. In addition to some vocabulary learned from Meagan, he became a great mimic (会模仿的动物) of cats, dogs, and chickens. Plus, he could sing along to the radio. The bird was a nice playmate for the little girl, and he always knew how to lift her spirits. The bird was more than just a pet; he was a member of the family.
One day, with Samantha at school, Hannah had comfortably positioned herself in front of morning cartoons while Meagan was busy cooking in the kitchen, preparing the little girl her favorite breakfast treat, an apple pie. When Meagan was done baking the apple pie, she placed it at the center of the kitchen table to cool. She looked at Hannah and, confident the child was fully engaged with the TV, walked out of the kitchen quickly to use the bathroom.
Meagan was gone maybe 30 seconds. And suddenly, she heard the bird going crazy, screaming loudly. She heard two very distinct words from the parrot’s mouth. “Mama! Baby!” Repeated over and over again. “Mama! Baby! Mama! Baby!”
Meagan ran out of the bathroom to find Hannah in the kitchen, holding the partly eaten apple pie, fighting for breath, her face and lips a terrifying shade of blue. And Willie was still screaming loudly.Hannah had climbed up on a chair, gotten the apple pie from the kitchen table and was clearly choking on it.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;

A group of farmers in Nigeria is using a technology-based method to grow crops. The method, known as aeroponics (气雾栽培), does not involve soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air.
Aeroponics is not well-known in Nigeria but farmers there are working to make the technique more popular.
14. What do we know about Abeokuta from the passage?
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. A

【答案】One possible version:
With a pounding heart, Meagan grabbed Hannah immediately. She began performing first aid to help the choking girl. After a few pushes to Hannah's chest, a small piece of apple pie flew out of her mouth, and she started breathing normally again. Her face and lips returned to their normal color from the terrible blue.As Hannah was brought back to safety, Willie, the parrot, finally quieted down. Overcome with relief,Meagan burst into tears. After making sure that Hannah was okay, Meagan sat down with her and gave her a big hug. She explained to Hannah how important it was to chew her food properly. Hannah listened attentively, still a little shaken up from the incident.
Around lunchtime, Samantha came back from school. Meagan told Samantha about what had happened with Hannah and how Willie had saved the girl' s life by alerting her to the danger. Samantha was in shock but grateful that everything turned out okay. She hugged Hannah and stroked her back, murmuring, “It’s alright now, sweetie.” They knew that they owed a debt of gratitude to the chatty bird who had become such an important member of their household. From that day on, they were even more appreciative of Willie's presence. The parrot not only became a playmate for Hannah, but also a hero.
