I did not come from a wealthy background. My mother, a single mother who raised 6 children, wanted me to have a secure future, so she spent a lot of money to send me to the UK, where I learned to be a professional secretary.
After graduation, I worked as a secretary. I couldn’t concentrate on paperwork and was later diagnosed with ADHD, meaning a person may have difficulty staying on task, sustaining focus, and staying organized, and these problems aren’t due to disobedience or lack of comprehension.
When I was fired from three offices, I lost all my self-respect. With nothing left to lose, I decided to open a small restaurant. Kitchen is the only place to gain back my self-esteem. I was very lucky. Many famous chefs were kind enough to share their cooking secrets with me. They saw something in me: a fearless middle-aged woman. My cooking skills improved a lot and the my business started to pick up. I became kind of famous as CNN named ChoyChoy Kitchen as one of the Best Private Kitchen in Hong Kong.
Then, I bought a small house in Aobadai, Meguro and began to run my own restaurant. The restaurant was really small and could serve only 4 guests. I served only authentic Chinese Cuisine with high-end food ingredients. However, the cost of high-end ingredients in Japan was high too and the profit was unexpectedly low. Despite that, I still feel a profound joy whenever guests appreciate authentic Chinese Cuisine. Whenever I got a praise, I feel like being chosen to spread real Chinese Cuisine in Japan.
Introducing the authentic Chinese Cuisine to Japanese is a challenging mission. Most of the Chinese Cuisine in Japan is adapted to the local preferences and tastes and most Japanese have never experienced the true flavors of China’s diverse dishes. Although mission sounds difficult, I will try my best.
4. Despite financial limitations what motivated the author’s mother to invest heavily in her education?
A. A passion for pursuing a cooking career.
B. A commitment to providing for the family.
C. A motivation to overcome financial hardship.
D. A desire for a secure and stable prospect.
5. How did the author’s ADHD diagnosis affect her work as a secretary?
A. It enhanced her organizational skills. B. It weakened her focus and productivity.
C. It improved her understanding of tasks. D. It led to her being fired by her boss.
6. What can be inferred about the author’s challenge in introducing authentic Chinese cuisine to Japan?
A. Japanese diners are resistant to trying new flavors.
B. The high-quality ingredients in Japan is costly.
C. Many Japanese are unfamiliar with the true flavors of Chinese cuisine.
D. Competition from established local restaurants is fierce.
7. Which of the following best describes the author’s personality?
A. Lazy and unmotivated. B. Determined and knowledgeable.
C. Resolved and adaptable. D. Warm-hearted and optimistic.
A study has found that verbal abuse or hurtful words in childhood may be as damaging to long-term mental well-being as physical abuse, if not more so. This groundbreaking research highlights the need to treat verbal abuse as a serious public health issue that comes with lasting psychological consequences.
Research led by Liverpool John Moores University has drawn on the data of 20,687 adults from England and Wales. In the survey, participants were asked about their exposure to physical and/or verbal abuse before the age of 18. Then current mental health markers were assessed using a mental well-being scale, which factors in optimism, relaxation, social connection and coping skills. The survey asked participants how often they felt optimistic about the future, useful and relaxed.
What the researchers found was that those who experienced verbal abuse as children were 1.64 times more likely to report poor mental well-being as adults. Meanwhile, individuals exposed to physical abuse were 1.52 times more likely to have mental health problems later in life, and those who experienced both verbal and physical maltreatment were 2.15 times more likely to have negative mental health outcomes.
There’s a growing body of evidence that demonstrates how verbal abuse in childhood has long- term impacts. It’s often viewed as less harmful than other forms of maltreatment. The researchers found that while physical abuse had decreased — from around 20.2% of children born in the 1970s to 10% of those born in 2000 or later — verbal abuse has increased. This study found that those who experienced this in their youth had nearly double the likelihood of social isolation.
There remains an urgent need for greater measures to prevent physical abuse. Verbal abuse may not immediately manifest in ways that catch the attention of bystanders, clinicians, or others in supporting services. The researchers emphasize that this study doesn’t downplay the long- term harm of physical abuse, but it highlights the need to better consider verbal maltreatment when it comes to both child protection policies and mental health treatment in adults who have experienced this trauma.
8. What did the survey in paragraph 2 focus on?
A. Adult abuse experiences.
B. Social connection in childhood.
C. Current physical health markers.
D. Childhood abuse and adult mental health.
9. How does the author present the issue in paragraph 3?
A. By presenting comparative research data. B. By introducing the study’s background.
C. By explaining research methodology. D. By proposing policy solutions.
10. What change in abuse patterns did researchers note?
A. Physical abuse increased since 2000.
B. Verbal abuse decreased significantly.
C. Verbal abuse rose while physical abuse declined.
D. Both types dropped among newer generations.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Physical abuse prevention strategies
B. Verbal abuse’s lasting adult impact
C. Survey methods in psychology research
D. Improving childhood mental health policies
D
What shape the school of the future will take is uncertain, but most educators and observers agree that the future school will go electronic.
In the future, schools as we know will no longer exist. In their place will be community-style centers operating seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Computers will become an essential part for an effective school of the future. Students will see and hear teachers on computers. Accessing “classrooms” on their home computers, students will learn when it’s most convenient for them. Yet some attendance at an actual school will be required to help students develop appropriate social skills.
One of American public schools, A.C.T. Academy in McKinney, Texas, was created as an actual “school of the future”. Originally funded by a $5.5 million grant from the USA Department of Education, the school is now supported by the McKinney Independent School District.
At the school, knowledge is “actively constructed by the learner on a base of prior knowledge, attitudes, and values”. Sophisticated technology is in place to support the pursuit of knowledge.
The 250 Academy students all have access to a computer. The 12-to 18-year-olds each have their own computer; 7-to 11-year-olds have one portable computer for every two students; and 5-and 6-year-olds use computers at fixed stations. In addition, the students use multimedia computers, printers, CD-ROMs, VCRs, video editing machines, camcorders, cable television, online services, and telephones — simple but effective research tools.
Whatever the shape of a school of the future might be, technology is always a huge part of it. The school days when computers mean processing words or playing games will be behind us.
12. What will play an important role in the school of the future?
A. Computers. B. Environment. C. Teachers. D. Skills.
13. What can be inferred from the text?
A. There will be no longer schools in the future.
B. Many students are playing games on computers now.
C. Students will only stay at home to study in the future.
D. Many educators are sure of the function of the future schools.
14. What does the underlined word “sophisticated” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Simple. B. Complex. C. Advanced. D. Specialized.
15. Which of the following about A.C.T. Academy is TRUE?
A. High technology is made full use of in it.
B. It is the only actual public school in the future.
C. All students in it have a computer of their own.
D. It was funded by the McKinney Independent School District.

I was really starving when I stepped out of the city library after an entire afternoon buried in books. Then I smelt something delicious—the hot dog stand at the street corner.
“One hot dog, please!” I nearly rushed to the stand.
“OK, ready soon!” The vendor (摊主) replied cheerfully. As he handed me the hot dog, he grinned, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I guessed that was the slogan for his little business, for the words were painted in cheerful yellow letters on his cart.
I couldn’t wait to take a bite. The warm bread, the chilli sauce and the juice in the sausage — it was the best thing in the world! Definitely at that time!
“Five dollars, young lady,” the vendor said, wiping his hands on his apron.
Hot dog in one hand, I reached for my wallet with the other. Just then, “Ouch!” a cry came from behind me. I turned back and found a woman in her 50’s struggling to pick herself up from the ground. Her grocery bag split open with oranges rolling in every direction.
Seeing this, I stuffed the rest of the hot dog into my mouth, picked up the oranges and put them back into her bag. “Are you okay?” I asked with concern.
“Thank you. I didn’t see the pole on the ground,” she breathed. Noticing her hand was wounded, I remembered the Band-Aid(创可贴)in my bag and dug it out. “Thank you so much for your kindness,” the woman said as I carefully applied it to her wound. Across the street, the bus I was about to take was pulling in. Waving a goodbye to the woman, I dashed to the bus stop and barely got aboard before the door closed.
As the bus pulled away I saw the woman bought a hot dog from the same vendor. On the way, I was always wondering if she would be greeted with the same words, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I was lost in it...

A study has found that verbal abuse or hurtful words in childhood may be as damaging to long-term mental well-being as physical abuse if not more so.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“In the survey, participants were asked about their exposure to physical and/or verbal abuse before the age of 18. Then current mental health markers were assessed using a mental well-being scale, which factors in optimism, relaxation, social connection and coping skills.(在调查中,参与者被问及他们在18岁之前是否遭受过身体和/或言语虐待。然后使用心理健康量表评估当前的心理健康指标,该量表考虑了乐观、放松、社会联系和应对技能等因素)”可知,第2段的调查关注的是童年期虐待和成年后的心理健康之间的关系。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“What the researchers found was that those who experienced verbal abuse as children were 1.64 times more likely to report poor mental well-being as adults. Meanwhile, individuals exposed to physical abuse were 1.52 times more likely to have mental health problems later in life, and those who experienced both verbal and physical maltreatment were 2.15 times more likely to have negative mental health outcomes.(研究人员发现,那些在童年时期遭受过言语虐待的人,成年后报告心理健康状况不佳的可能性要高出1.64倍。与此同时,遭受过身体虐待的人在以后的生活中出现心理健康问题的可能性要高出1.52倍,而同时遭受过言语和身体虐待的人出现负面心理健康结果的可能性要高出2.15倍)”可知,作者在本段通过展示对比性的研究数据来呈现问题。故选A项。
【10题详解】

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,文章第一段“A study has found that verbal abuse or hurtful words in childhood may be as damaging to long-term mental well-being as physical abuse, if not more so.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As the bus pulled away, I saw the woman bought a hot dog from the same vendor. On the way, I was always wondering if she would be greeted with the same words, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I was lost in it...

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 But wait — had I forgotten something? My heart suddenly sank as I realized I hadn’t paid the vendor! Frantically checking my wallet, I confirmed the five dollars were still there. The scene flashed back: I had dropped the wallet while helping the woman. The bus was already moving, and I could do nothing but watch the hot dog stand shrink in the distance, guilt overwhelming me.
“Someone has paid for it,” the vendor smiled. Puzzled, I followed his gaze to the woman I had helped earlier. She waved at me warmly from the street corner. The vendor explained, “She insisted on paying for you, saying kindness deserves kindness.” Tears welled up as I understood — her hot dog purchase wasn’t just for herself. The vendor’s cheerful slogan now carried profound meaning, weaving our small acts of goodwill into something truly “the best in the world.”
