Earthquakes,floods,storms...It seems that every day we
read about at least one of these in the world. But every year,
another kind of disaster somewhere causes great harm to plants
沙漠蝗虫
and people. It is something much smaller and not as famous as
恐怖的蝗灾
an earthquake or a flood一it is an insect called the locust(蝗虫).
The locust usually does things alone-it lives and eats on its own.But
sometimes, something changes how nature works. When the number of locusts
increases()in some places and there are plenty of plants to eat,the locusts
get together in swarms.
Perhaps the most dangerous locust is the desert locust. We can find it in
Africa,the Middle East and Asia,in a total of about 60 countries.When desert
locusts swarm, they bring problems to one tenth of all people in the world.
The numbers are huge and scary.A swarm of desert locusts can be 1,200
km2-imagine that an area over 20 km wide and 50 km long is full of locusts!
Each locust eats its own weight in plants every day.So a swarm of desert locusts
can eat more than 150 million kilos of food in one day. They can also fly very
long distances. In 1954,a swarm of locusts from northwest Australia flew
thousands of miles to Spain and finally landed in Britain!
It is no wonder that farmers in many countries fear desert locusts more than
snakes and spiders. It is the desert locust that brings hunger to people all over
the world.

A.Plants.
B.Groups.
C.Animals.

Can animals predict earthquakes and other natural
disasters? Many people think so.Is there any real science
behind this idea?
As far back as 2,300 years ago,the ancient Greeks noticed
that mice and snakes would "behave strangely days before a big
earthquake'”.However,.there isn't enough scientific proof(证明)that animals
can predict earthquakes,at least not days before they happen.
When an earthquake happens,it makes two kinds of energy waves. The
smaller one is called a Primary Wave or"P wave".It arrives a couple of minutes
before the larger Secondary Wave,.or“S wave”.The“P wave”travels faster
because it can go through solids(图体),liquids(液体)and gases, but the“S
wave"can only go through solids.Very few people notice the "P wave",but
animals often can, because they have amazing senses.
With their super sense of smell, some wild animals can tell when a fire is
burning nearby. But they have no idea when and where fires will start ahead of
time.Today, global warming makes wildfires more common. So it is harder than
ever for animals to survive these disasters.
A new study shows that some birds may be able to sense storms much
earlier than humans. The researchers studied a kind of songbird. In some years,
these birds started migrating (if)months earlier than usual. They always
migrate during storm seasons. The researchers think of the birds'unusual
behaviour as a predictor of storms. But we need more research to prove this.
()g.What is the difference between the“P wave”and the“S wave''?
A.The“P wave'”is larger than the“S wave”.
B.The“S wave'”can only go through liquids.
C.The“S wave'”travels faster than the“P wave'”.
D.The“P wave”can go through more materials(材料).
()10.What causes more animals to lose their lives in wildfires nowadays?
A.The earth's temperature keeps rising.
B.Animals lose the super sense of smell.
C.Animals can't find enough water or food.
D.Animals fail to notice danger ahead of time.
()11.What do the researchers find about the songbirds?
A.They may be able to predict storms.
B.They may be able to predict wildfires.
C.They may be able to predict earthquakes.
D.They may be able to predict global warming.

Nowadays,we have many kinds of technologies to protect us from different
disasters. We even know where and when some disasters, like typhoons and
floods, will happen. While most of the new technologies are far away from us,
some around us can help a lot in disasters.
The drone is one of them.It can be used to send food and
water when a natural disaster happens.Very often the buildings are
too dangerous for rescue teams to get in.They can make the drone
fly into the buildings to search for those who are still alive first. They are also
becoming a useful tool for firefighters, helping them find and fight wildfires. In
some faraway places in the world, drones are the fastest way to send medicine to
people who are in great need of it.
Social media is also a useful tool when it comes to natural disasters. With
its help, people can know about the natural disasters before they hit. What's
more, some social media platforms()allow people to mark themselves as
being safe after disasters,so others can know their situations.
Social media is a place for up-to-date news too,so people can learn what is
going on in disaster areas.Besides, many social media platforms allow people to
donate()money to help people in disaster areas. The money will help them
return to normal life as soon as possible. For example, live streaming (
helped raise a lot of money for Xizang after the earthquake in 2025.
Although these technologies can help when a natural disaster happens,we
still need to prepare necessary tools and learn important skills to protect
ourselves.
()13.According to the writer, what can drones do by flying into dangerous
buildings after a disaster happens?
A.Call rescue teams.
B.Send food and water.
C.Look for people alive.
D.Warn people not to walk around.
()14.What does the underlined word "its"in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The drone's.
B.The disaster's.
C.The social media's.
D.The technology's.
()15.Why does the writer mention live streaming?
A.To show social media can help raise money after a disaster.
B.To show people can tell others they are safe through social media.
第4页(共8页)
C.To show people can know about the coming disasters on social
media.
D.To show social media can help people know how to save
themselves.
()16.What's the purpose of this text?
A.It tells readers what to do when disasters come.
B.It advises readers to use social media more often.
C.It tells readers how some technologies help in disasters.
D.It asks readers to learn necessary skills for natural disasters.

Every year, wildfires destroy a lot of forest land.Homes are
destroyed, and thousands of people lose their lives.Smokejumpers
(空降森林消防员)are helping to stop these disasters.
Smokejumpers are a special kind of firefighters. They jump
from planes into areas that are hard to reach by car or on foot,
such as the middle of a mountain forest. They try to put out fires as quickly as
possible. The idea of jumping out of planes to fight wildfires first started in the
1930s and became popular in the 1940s.
At a fire site(现场),smokejumpers first check the area and decide how to
put out the fire.Their main task is to stop the fire from spreading().Using
tools like shovels and axes(铲子和斧头),they clear away combustible(易燃
materials such as branches and other dry things. They also carry water with
them,but not much.
Although most smokejumpers are men, more women are now joining. The
most important things are their weight and height. For example, smokejumpers in
the US must weigh between 54 and 91 kilos. This way, they won't get hurt easily
or be blown away by strong winds when landing.
Smokejumpers must be able to live in the wilderness().In Russia,
many smokejumpers can find food in the forest and even make simple furniture
(家具)out of trees.
Their work is dangerous, and they work long hours. But for these
smokejumpers,it is not just a job. They love to jump out of planes, fight fires,
and live in the forest.Alexi Tishin,a 28-year-old Russian smokejumper,says,"I
love this job. It's the best job for strong and brave people."

How to Stay Mentally Healthy
We all know mental health is quite important for every student. As teenagers, how can
we stay mentally healthy? Here is my advice.
At school,we should talk more with classmates and join school clubs to make our school
life more colourful. When we have problems,we should not be afraid to ask teachers for
help.Teachers have more experience, and we can trust them. What's more, schools should
also offer mental health courses. At home,it's helpful to talk more with our parents. We
should remember that grades aren't the only important thing. In our free time,we should do
sport to stay healthy and read more books.Reading helps us grow.Making good friends is
also important because they can share our sadness and happiness.Last but not least,
developing a good hobby can help us relax.
By following the advice,we can have a positive and healthy mind.

Many earthquakes happen every year.As students,we should learn some ways to protect
ourselves during earthquakes.
If we are indoors, the safest place is under a strong table or desk.Use your hands and
arms to protect your head. Also, keep away from windows and stay close to a wall,as it's safer
than standing in the middle of the room.
When we are outdoors,we must stay away from tall buildings and big trees. They might
fall down and hurt us.
If we are in the ruins after an earthquake, don't be nervous!Remember, staying calm is
the key.Shout loudly for help-others will hear you and come to save you.
These are some useful ways to protect ourselves during earthquakes.I hope they can
help you.
