第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
When purchasing goods and services in the United States, stores often add a little extra money onto the sales price. This is a sales tax. Taxable items often are goods or services that are considered unnecessary or luxuries, while necessary or essential things are often tax-free. Here are some unusual state taxes.
Kansas Hot- Air Balloon Amusement Tax
In Kansas, amusement rides are taxed. But is a hot-air balloon an amusement ride or transportation? The answer depends on whether or not the balloon is tied down. If you go up in a hot-air balloon while it is tied to the ground, then you will have to pay a 6.5 percent tax for your amusement ride. But if the balloon is allowed to float away, it is considered air transportation. Just make sure you have a pilot with you to land safely!
Alabama Playing Cards Tax
Poker players in the United States must pay taxes on their winnings. But taxing playing cards? Until a few years ago, if you bought a pack of playing cards in Alabama, you were charged 10 cents per pack even if you weren’t using the cards for gambling. In May 2015, though, the Alabama legislature began enforcing a decision to abandon that law.
Maine Blueberry Tax
Maine’s rocky coast and acidic soil create the perfect conditions for growing wild blueberries. Determined to help maintain the wild blueberry’s reputation as a superior product, the government imposes a tax on anyone who grows, purchases, sells, handles, or processes the delicious little blue rascals. The tax of three quarters of one cent per pound of fresh wild blueberries helps fund research to support the industry.
New Mexico Centenarian (百岁老人)
Income Tax “Deduction”! If you live to be 100 years old, we have some good news for you. If you take up residence in New Mexico, you won’t have to file or to pay income taxes on any money you earn from your savings accounts or job.
21. Which of the following might be tax-free according to paragraph 1?
A. Buying some groceries. B. Purchasing a customized watch.
C. Dining at a restaurant. D. Travelling abroad for pleasure.
22. Who might have to pay the highest tax now according to the article?
A. A passenger traveling across Kansas by hot-air balloon.
B. A magician buying a pack of cards for tricks in Alabama,
C. A customer in Maine purchasing 10 pounds of blueberries.
D. A centenarian in New Mexico winning a prize lottery.
23. Which column of a magazine might this article come from?
A. Economy. B. Entertainment. C. Travel. D. Culture.

I come from a mountainous land where Tajik is my native tongue. I learned Russian and English, but Chinese seemed unclimbable. When I arrived in Hangzhou, I could recognize characters but could hardly speak. I was quiet, tentative, anxious about making mistakes. Motivation? It wasn’t enough. What I lacked was “structure”.
One afternoon I attended a poetry recital. I heard Chinese verses, felt their rhythm, and realized that I needed more than words; I needed a “structure”. I designed my own daily plan — write 25 Chinese characters every day, about two hours each session; play soft piano melodies in the background to make study calm and avoid stress; tell myself, “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes — just start.”
Soon, mistakes felt less scary. I remembered how as a child I learned to speak my first words, stumbling and falling, but trying again and again. My teacher’s words echoed, “Fear of mistakes prevents learning”. That structured habit made learning Chinese feel less like a chore and more like a part of me.
In Hangzhou, I joined in cultural events. Once, teaching children English, I sang with my guitar. As they smiled and sang along, I saw myself in their eyes — once fearful, but persevering. This experience ultimately transformed more than just my language skills — it taught me patience, empathy, and the true value of cultural exchange.
Now, I no longer translate in my head; I laugh and dream directly in Chinese. I have come to understand that language is far more than a tool — it is an entirely new lens through which to see life.
So, if you are learning a new language, do not wait for motivation to find you. Build your own “structure”, immerse yourself in the culture, and dare to speak your truth.
24. What does the underlined word “structure” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Playing piano melodies. B. Memorizing more words.
C. Attending a poetry recital. D. Making a regular study plan.
25 Why did the author see himself in the children’s eyes?
A. They were faced with the same fear. B. They shared similar learning experiences.
C. The children taught him some core values. D. The children reminded him of his childhood.
26. What does the author think of language as?
A. A way of having fun. B. A shortcut to success.
C. A window into the world. D. A tool for earning a bread.
27. What can we conclude from the author’s experience?
A. Language learning requires patience. B. One should avoid mistakes in learning.
C. Proper methods count in language learning. D. Cultural exchange is a must to master Chinese.

According to a study published in Ostrich: Journal of African Ornithology, climate crisis and overfishing have led to a shocking 95% drop in African penguin populations across two key breeding colonies in South Africa. The research focused on colonies located on Dassen Island and Robben Island, revealing that between 2004 and 2012, more than 60,000 penguins starved to death there.
The primary cause behind this tragedy is the disappearance of sardines, the penguins’ main food source. What makes the situation even more heartbreaking is their moulting period (换羽期). African penguins moult annually to replace worn- out feathers, a 21-day land-bound period without feeding. To survive this period, they must build up sufficient fat reserves beforehand.
However, the number of sardines off western South Africa has dropped to just 25% of its peak except for three years since 2004. Changes in the temperature have made the fishes’ spawning (产卵) less successful while the amounts of fishing have remained large in the region.
Dr Richard Sherley, from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter, emphasized that the losses in these two colonies are far from isolated. “These declines are mirrored elsewhere,” he stated.
Conservationists are taking action on the ground, by building artificial nests to shelter chicks, managing predators and adults and chicks who need rescuing. Commercial fishing with large nets to trap fish has been banned around the six largest penguin-breeding colonies in South Africa.
It is hoped this will “increase access to prey for penguins at critical parts of their life cycle”, said the study co- author Dr Azwianewi Makhado, from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment in South Africa. Yet, Professor Lorien Pichegru, who was not involved in the research, warned and emphasized “Urgent action is needed to address low fish stocks — not just for penguins, but for all species dependent on them.”
28. What can we know about the moulting period of African penguins?
A. It happens every other year. B. It involves feeding undersea.
C. It demands enough fat storage. D. It requires them to stay in water.
29. What caused sardine’s population to decline off western South Africa?
A. Overconsumption by penguins. B. Temperature changes and overfishing.
C. Artificial nests and commercial fishing. D. The introduction of its natural predators.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Where fishing is banned. B. How chicks are rescued.
C. Why artificial nests are built. D. What measures have been taken.
31. What can we infer from Professor Lorien Pichegru’s words?
A. We should lay emphasis on cooperation. B. Protection for sardines should be prioritized.
C. Efforts to offer food to penguins have paid off. D. Penguins and fish stocks are loosely connected.
D
Chinese brands are rapidly expanding globally, from Pop Mart’s cute collectibles to TikTok’s viral influence and Luckin Coffee’s budget- friendly drinks. As China moves up the value chain, its soft power grows, though sustainability challenges remain. The long- standing narrative of “made in China, designed elsewhere” is undergoing a profound change.
Pop Mart, which started with a single Beijing store a decade ago, now operates outlets across the US. Since 2024, its annual income has more than tripled, with overall sales surging 250%. As a flagship cultural export, TikTok ranks among America’s top five social media platforms, boasting over 170 million monthly active users and exposing young Americans to Chinese pop culture, traditional craftsmanship and daily life through short videos. Luckin Coffee, China’s largest coffee chain, outperformed Starbucks in sales income and is now expanding in the US by adapting its menu to local tastes and focusing on high-foot-traffic urban areas.
These brands’ global successes are often supported by government initiatives, as China aims to expand its international influence through enterprises blending innovation and cultural connotations (内涵).
However, significant challenges persist. TikTok has faced intense reviews over data privacy in Western countries, while Pop Mart confronts pressures over packaging waste. For some Chinese e-commerce platforms, user retention rates (用户留存率) remain lower than Amazon’s 93% in the US, as they struggle to compete with local rivals’ personalized services.
Despite these obstacles, Chinese brands have firmly established their global presence. As a natural outcome of China’s economic upgrading, their international expansion integrates more Chinese products and services into global daily life — fostering the nation’s soft power and reshaping “Chinese brands” as innovative, trustworthy and culturally resonant.
32. What’s the relationship between the first two paragraphs?
A. Cause and effect. B. Topic and examples.
C. Problem and solution. D. Conception and explanation.
33 Why does Chinese government support the global expansion of these brands?
A. To promote international status. B. To reduce domestic market pressure.
C. To beat foreign brands in competition. D. To tackle oversea sustainability challenges.
34. What challenge do some Chinese e- commerce platforms face in the US?
A. Strict data reviews. B. Poor cultural integration.
C. Severe packaging waste. D. Low user retention rates.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Chinese brands are expanding globally.
B. Chinese brands are facing oversea challenges.
C. TikTok and Luckin Coffee are great hits in the US.
D. Official initiatives guarantee Chinese brands’ success.

The start of a new year can seem like the ideal time to make a fresh start — to shrug off the worries and pressures of the previous 12 months and view the world in a different way. Fortunately, for anyone aiming to do just that, a wealth of scientific research offers practical strategies to boost your mood.
Stop striving for perfection
Perfectionism is often seen as a positive trait. However, there is mounting evidence that a perfectionist mindset is linked to depression and anxiety. So, try to be kind to yourself. If you make a mistake, don’t rush to self-criticise. And if you have children, try to create a family environment where imperfection isn’t just accepted but is celebrated. ____36____.
Develop better friendships
Friendships are enormously important for our health. They can influence everything from the strength of your immune system to your risk of heart disease. ____37____. You can try asking for more information, discussing the implications and expressing joy for them. Celebrating successes in this way can boost both your mood as well as your relationship.
____38____
It is an old idea, but one that is well evidenced. To give it a try, set aside some time each evening to reflect on your day, writing down three things that went well or that you enjoyed. ____39____. The important element, though, is to think about why these things felt positive to you.
Find time for a nap
In many countries, having a catnap is part of daily life. Try to keep your naps less than 20 minutes. Short naps, lasting five to 15 minutes, can immediately improve how well we perform mentally, with the stimulus lasting for up to three hours after we wake up. ____40____. If so, you might disrupt your sleep at night.
A. Count your blessings
B. Change your mindset
C. Chat with your friends about good news
D. It is common for friendships to fade away
E. Don’t schedule your nap too late in the day
F. Those imperfections, after all, are what make us human
G. It can be anything, however small or seemingly unimportant

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my headteacher announced the “Community Care Project” in class, I slumped back in my chair, letting out a quiet sigh. The project required each student to volunteer 20 hours at a local shelter. To me, it sounded like nothing more than a chore (苦差事). I had planned to spend my weekends hanging out with friends or watching my favorite show, not cleaning floors or serving meals to strangers.
My first day at Hope Haven Shelter started with a sense of unwillingness. Mrs. Lopez, the shelter manager, greeted me with a warm smile, “Today, you’ll help with the after-school program for the kids staying here”. I nodded, trying to hide my disappointment. I had imagined folding blankets or organizing donations, not entertaining a group of noisy children.
The after-school program was held in a small room lined with colorful drawings. When I walked in, a group of kids aged 6 to 10 were sitting on the floor, arguing over a box of crayons (蜡笔). One little girl was sitting alone in the corner, staring at a piece of paper. I hesitated for a moment, then walked over to her. “Hi, I’m Lily,” I said softly. “What are you drawing?”
The girl looked up, her big eyes filled with shyness. “I’m Mia,” she mumbled. “I want to draw a house, but I don’t have the right colors.” She only had a black crayon. I pulled out the set of colored pencils I’d brought in my bag and handed them to her. Mia’s face lit up.
Over the next hour I sat with Mia, helping her blend (调制) colors. When I asked her about the house, she said it was the house she used to live in with her mom before they had to move to the shelter. “I miss it. But Mrs. Lopez says we’ll find a new home soon.” Her words made my heart ache.
注意:
1. 写作词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As weeks went by, the volunteer work was no longer a chore for me.

One afternoon, as I was leaving, Mia handed me a drawing of a house, labeled “Lily” and “Mia”.

M: Well, it’s true that I got a letter from her PR company, but I haven’t spoken to her myself. I really hope to meet her in person one day.
W: Good luck with that. So we’ve known that Judy was born in Detroit in 1985. What about her family?
M: Well, her mother was a high school teacher and her father was an engineer, but I think life was quite a battle for her since she was quite young, when her mother died of disease. Anyway, she took ballet, singing and violin lessons and got an amount of money from the university of Michigan to pay for her education.
W: Wow, she must have been quite good.
M: Well, I think on the whole Judy did well, but it wasn’t enough for her and she dropped out of college in 2005 went to New York to find a job.
W: Oh, okay. Now tell us how her career took off.

【原文】For decades, films, books and TV shows have been warning us of the arrival of artificial intelligence. It was often shown as a force that would try to destroy humans, but the reality has proven not to be the case. Deverell AI tools became popular in 2022 especially the artistic tools. AI art is now a hot topic. It allows people to create art simply by typing the text of what they want to see. And the AI software will draw it for them in a few minutes. While it is not perfect, the results have been impressive. However, human artists are questioning whether the AI is creating art or simply copying art it finds online. Some artists are angry with AI companies for stealing their work for research and are now calling for people to stop using AI services. However, for those people who do not have any artistic skills, it has allowed them to realize a dream of creating visual art simply and easily. Whether it will replace artists altogether remains to be seen.

25. Why did the author see himself in the children’s eyes?
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. C

According to a study published in Ostrich: Journal of African Ornithology climate crisis and overfishing have led to a shocking 95% drop in African penguin populations across two key breeding colonies in South Africa.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. B

33. Why does Chinese government support the global expansion of these brands?
【答案】32 B 33. A 34. D 35. A

Over the next hour, I sat with Mia, helping her blend (调制) colors. When I asked her about the house, she said it was the house she used to live in with her mom before they had to move to the shelter. “I miss it. But Mrs. Lopez says we’ll find a new home soon.” Her words made my heart ache.

1. 写作词数应为150个左右;

One afternoon, as I was leaving, Mia handed me a drawing of a house, labeled “Lily” and “Mia”.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
As weeks went by, the volunteer work was no longer a chore for me. I eagerly looked forward to each visit, planning activities and sharing laughter with Mia and the other children. My initial reluctance transformed into a genuine sense of purpose. I realized this wasn't about fulfilling a school requirement; it was about being a steady, caring presence. Even the small moments — helping with homework or resolving a crayon dispute — felt meaningful. My weekends now had a new and fulfilling rhythm that I had never experienced before.
One afternoon, as I was leaving, Mia handed me a drawing of a house, labeled “Lily” and “Mia”. It was bright and detailed, with two figures holding hands in front. “This is our new home,” she whispered. “You’re in it with me.” Her words and the gift touched me deeply, bringing tears to my eyes. In that moment, I fully understood the project’s true purpose: it wasn’t about the hours logged, but the hearts connected. That drawing became my most cherished reminder of how compassion can build a home anywhere, filling my heart with warmth and love.
